察AND HAVE TASTED OF THE HEAVENLY GIFT察AND WERE MADE PARTAKERS OF THE HOLY GHOST察AND HAVE TASTED THE GOOD WORD OF GOD察AND THE POWERS OF THE WORLD TO COME察IF THEY SHALL FALL AWAY察 TO RENEW THEM AGAIN UNTO REPENTANCE。 Heb。 vi。 4´6。 FOR察IF WE SIN WILFULLY察AFTER WE HAVE RECEIVED THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH察THERE REMAINS NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SIN察BUT A CERTAIN FEARFUL LOOKING FOR OF JUDGMENT察AND FIERY INDIGNATION察WHICH SHALL DEVOUR THE ADVERSARIES。 Heb。 x。 26察27。 AS ESAU察WHO FOR ONE MORSEL OF MEAT察 SOLD HIS BIRTHRIGHT。 FOR YE KNOW HOW THAT AFTERWARD察WHEN HE WOULD HAVE INHERITED THE BLESSING察HE WAS REJECTED察FOR HE FOUND NO PLACE OF REPENTANCE察THOUGH HE SOUGHT IT CAREFULLY WITH TEARS。 Heb。 xii。 16察17。

。 Now was the word of the gospel forced from my soul察so that no promise or encouragement was to be found in the Bible for me此 and now would that saying work upon my spirit to afflict me察 REJOICE NOT察O ISRAEL察FOR JOY察AS OTHER PEOPLE。 Hos。 ix。 1。 For I saw indeed察there was cause of rejoicing for those that held to Jesus察but for me察I had cut myself off by my transgressions察and left myself neither foot´hold察or hand´hold察among all the stays and props in the precious word of life。

。 And truly察I did now feel myself to sink into a gulph察as an house whose foundation is destroyed察I did liken myself in this condition察unto the case of some child that was fallen into a mill´ pit察who though it could make some shift to scramble and sprawl in the water察yet because it could find neither hold for hand nor foot察therefore at last it must die in that condition。 So soon as this fresh assault had fastened on my soul察that scripture came into my heart察This FOR MANY DAYS。 Dan。 x。 14。 And indeed I found it was so察for I could not be delivered察nor brought to peace again察until well nigh two years and a half were completely finished。 Wherefore these words察though in themselves察they tended to discouragement察yet to me察who feared this condition would be eternal察they were at some times as an help and refreshment to me。

。 For察thought I察MANY DAYS are not for ever察MANY DAYS will have an end察therefore seeing I was to be afflicted not a few but MANY DAYS察yet I was glad it was but FOR MANY DAYS。 Thus察I say察I would recall myself sometimes察and give myself an help察for as soon as ever the words came into my mind察at first察I knew my trouble would be long察yet this would be but sometimes察for I could not always think on this察nor ever be helped by it察though I did。

。 Now while the scriptures lay before me察and laid sin anew at my door察that saying察in Luke xviii。 1察with others察did encourage me to prayer此 then the tempter laid again at me very sore察 suggesting察THAT NEITHER THE MERCY OF GOD察NOR YET THE BLOOD OF CHRIST察DID AT ALL CONCERN ME察NOR COULD THEY HELP ME FOR MY SIN察 THEREFORE IT WAS BUT IN VAIN TO PRAY。 Yet察thought I察I WILL PRAY。 BUT察said the tempter察YOUR SIN IS UNPARDONABLE。 Well察said I察I WILL PRAY。 'Tis to no boot察said he。 Yet said I察I WILL PRAY。 So I went to prayer to God察and while I was at prayer察I uttered words to this effect此 LORD察SATAN TELLS ME察THAT NEITHER THY MERCY察NOR CHRIST'S BLOOD察IS SUFFICIENT TO SAVE MY SOUL此 LORD察SHALL I HONOUR THEE MOST察BY BELIEVING THOU WILT察AND CANST拭OR HIM察BY BELIEVING THOU NEITHER WILT NOT NOR CANST拭 LORD察I WOULD FAIN HONOUR THEE察BY BELIEVING THOU WILT AND CANST。

。 And as I was thus before the Lord察that scripture fastened on my heart O man察great is thy faith察Matt。 xv。 28察even as if one had clapped me on the back察as I was on my knees before God此 yet I was not able to believe this察that this was a prayer of faith察till almost six months after察for I could not think that I had faith察or that there should be a word for me to act faith on察therefore I should still be察as sticking in the jaws of desperation察and went mourning up and down in a sad condition。

。 There was nothing now that I longed for more than to be put out of doubt察as to this thing in question察and as I was vehemently desiring to know察if there was indeed hope for me察these words came rolling into my mind察WILL THE LORD CAST OFF FOR EVER拭AND WILL HE BE FAVOURABLE NO MORE拭 IS HIS MERCY CLEAN GONE FOR EVER拭 DOTH HIS PROMISE FAIL FOR EVERMORE拭 HATH GOD FORGOTTEN TO BE GRACIOUS拭 HATH HE IN ANGER SHUT UP HIS TENDER MERCIES拭 Ps。 lxxvii。 7´9。 And all the while they run in my mind察methought I had still this as the answer察'TIS A QUESTION WHETHER HE HATH OR NO此 IT MAY BE HE HATH NOT。 Yea察the interrogatory seemed to me to carry in it a sure affirmation that indeed He had not察nor would so cast off察but would be favourable此 that His promise doth not fail察and that He had not forgotten to be gracious察nor would in anger shut up tender mercy。 Something also there was upon my heart at the same time察 which I cannot now call to mind察which察with this text察did sweeten my heart察and make me conclude察that His mercy might not be quite gone察nor clean gone for ever。

。 At another time I remembered察I was again much under this question察WHETHER THE BLOOD OF CHRIST WAS SUFFICIENT TO SAVE MY SOUL拭in which doubt I continued from morning察till about seven or eight at night此 and at last察when I was察as it were察quite worn out with fear察lest it should not lay hold on me察these words did sound suddenly within my heart此 HE IS ABLE。 But methought察this word ABLE察was spoke loud unto me察it showed a GREAT WORD察it seemed to be writ in GREAT LETTERS察and gave such a jostle to my fear and doubt I mean for the time it tarried with me察which was about a day as I never had from that察all my life察either before or after。 Heb。 vii。 25。

。 But one morning as I was again at prayer察and trembling under the fear of this察THAT NO WORD OF GOD COULD HELP ME察that piece of a sentence darted in upon me察MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT。 At this察 methought I felt some stay察as if there might be hopes。 But察oh how good a thing it is for God to send His word for察about a fortnight before察I was looking on this very place察and then I thought it could not come near my soul with comfort察therefore I threw down my book in a pet此 then I thought it was not large enough for me察no察not large enough察but now it was as if it had arms of grace so wide察that it could not only enclose me察but many more such as I besides。

。 By these words I was sustained察yet not without exceeding conflicts察for the space of seven or eight weeks察for my peace would be in it察and out察sometimes twenty times a day察comfort now察 and trouble presently察peace now察and before I could go a furlong察 as full of fear and guilt as ever heart could hold。 And this was not only now and then察but my whole seven weeks' experience此 for this about THE SUFFICIENCY OF GRACE察and THAT of ESAU'S parting with his birthright察would be like a pair of scales within my mind察 sometimes one end would be uppermost察and sometimes again the other察according to which would be my peace or trouble。

。 Therefore I did still pray to God察that He would come in with this scripture more fully on my heart察to wit察that He would help me to apply the whole sentence察for as yet I could not此 that He gave察that I gathered察but farther I could not go察for as yet it only helped me to hope there might be mercy for me察MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT此 And though it came no farther察it answered my former question察to wit察That there was hope察yet because FOR THEE was left out察I was not contented察but prayed to God for that also。 Wherefore察one day察when I was in a meeting of God's people察full of sadness and terror察for my fears again were strong upon me察and察 as I was now thinking察my soul was never the better察but my case most sad and fearful察these words did with great power suddenly break in upon me察MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR THEE察MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR THEE察MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR THEE察three times together此 And oh methought that every word was a mighty word unto me察as MY察and GRACE察and SUFFICIENT察and FOR THEE察they were then察 and sometimes are still察far bigger than others be。

。 At which time my understanding was so enlightened察that I was as though I had seen the Lord Jesus look down from heaven察through the tiles upon me察and direct these words unto me。 This sent me mourning home察it broke my heart察and filled me full of joy察and laid me low as the dust察only it stayed not long with me察I mean in this glory and refreshing comfort察yet it continued with me for several weeks察and did encourage me to hope此 but as soon as that powerful operation of it was taken from my heart察that other察about ESAU察returned upon me as before此 so my soul did hang as in a pair of scales again察sometimes up察and sometimes down察now in peace察 and anon again in terror。

。 Thus I went on for many weeks察sometimes comforted察and sometimes tormented察and especially at sometimes my torment would be very sore察for all those scriptures forenamed in the HEBREWS察 would be set before me察as the only sentences that would keep me out of heaven。 Then again I would begin to repent that ever that thought went through me察I would also think thus with myself此 WHY察 HOW MANY SCRIPTURES ARE THERE AGAINST ME拭 THERE ARE BUT THREE OR FOUR察AND CANNOT GOD MISS THEM察AND SAVE ME FOR ALL THEM拭 Sometimes again I would think察OH IF IT WERE NOT FOR THESE THREE OR FOUR WORDS察NOW HOW MIGHT I BE COMFORTED And I could hardly forbear at some times察to wish them out of the book。

。 Then methought I should see as if both PETER and PAUL察and JOHN察and all the writers察did look with scorn upon me察and hold me in derision察and as if they had said unto me察ALL OUR WORDS ARE TRUTH察ONE OF AS MUCH FORCE AS ANOTHER此 IT IS NOT WE THAT HAVE CUT YOU OF察BUT YOU HAVE CAST AWAY YOURSELF。 THERE IS NONE OF OUR SENTENCES THAT YOU MUST TAKE HOLD UPON察BUT THESE AND SUCH AS THESE察IT IS IMPOSSIBLE察Heb。 vi。察THERE REMAINS NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SIN察Heb。 x。 AND IT HAD BEEN BETTER FOR THEM NOT TO HAVE KNOWN THE WILL OF GOD察THAN AFTER THEY HAD KNOWN IT察TO TURN FROM THE HOLY COMMANDMENT DELIVERED UNTO THEM察2 Peter ii。 21。 FOR THE SCRIPTURES CANNOT BE BROKEN。 John x。 35。

。 These察as the elders of the city of refuge察I saw察were to be judges both of my case and me察while I stood with the AVENGER of blood at my heels察trembling at their gate for deliverance察also with a thousand fears and mistrusts察I doubted that they would shut me out for ever。 Joshua xx。 3。 4。

。 Thus I was confounded察not knowing what to do察or how to be satisfied in this question察WHETHER THE SCRIPTURES COULD AGREE IN THE SALVATION OF MY SOUL拭 I quaked at the apostles察I knew their words were true察and that they must stand for ever。

。 And I remember one day察as I was in divers frames of spirit察 and considering that these frames were according to the nature of several scriptures that came in upon my mind察if this of grace察 then was I quiet察but of that of ESAU察then tormented。 Lord察 thought I察IF BOTH THESE SCRIPTURES SHOULD MEET IN MY HEART AT ONCE察I WONDER WHICH OF THEM WOULD GET THE BETTER OF ME。 So methoug
