s察and all their expressions of tenderness and fear to sin against their precious Saviour察condemn察 lay guilt upon察and also add continual affliction and shame upon my soul。 THE DREAD OF THEM WAS UPON ME察AND I TREMBLED AT GOD'S SAMUELS。 1 Sam。 xvi。 4。

。 Now also the tempter began afresh to mock my soul another way察saying察THAT CHRIST INDEED DID PITY MY CASE察AND WAS SORRY FOR MY LOSS察BUT FORASMUCH AS I HAD SINNED AND TRANSGRESSED AS I HAD DONE察HE COULD BY NO MEANS HELP ME察NOR SAVE ME FROM WHAT I FEARED此 FOR MY SIN WAS NOT OF THE NATURE OF THEIRS察FOR WHOM HE BLED AND DIED察NEITHER WAS IT COUNTED WITH THOSE THAT WERE LAID TO HIS CHARGE察WHEN HE HANGED ON A TREE此 THEREFORE察UNLESS HE SHOULD COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN察AND DIE ANEW FOR THIS SIN察THOUGH INDEED HE DID GREATLY PITY ME察YET I COULD HAVE NO BENEFIT OF HIM。 These things may seem ridiculous to others察even as ridiculous as they were in themselves察but to me they were most tormenting cogitations此 every one of them augmented my misery察that Jesus Christ should have so much love as to pity me察when yet He could not help me察nor did I think that the reason why He could not help me察was察because His merits were weak察or His grace and salvation spent on others already察but because His faithfulness to His threatening察would not let Him extend His mercy to me。 Besides察I thought察as I have already hinted察that my sin was not within the bounds of that pardon察that was wrapped up in a promise察and if not察then I knew assuredly察that it was more easy for heaven and earth to pass away察 than for me to have eternal life。 So that the ground of all these fears of mine did arise from a steadfast belief I had of the stability of the holy word of God察and also from my being misinformed of the nature of my sin。

。 But oh how this would add to my affliction察to conceit that I should be guilty of such a sin察for which He did not die。 These thoughts would so confound me察and imprison me察and tie me up from faith察that I knew not what to do。 But oh thought I察that He would come down again Oh that the work of man's redemption was yet to be done by Christ how would I pray Him and entreat Him to count and reckon this sin among the rest for which He died But this scripture would strike me down as dead察CHRIST BEING RAISED FROM THE DEAD察DIETH NO MORE察DEATH HATH NO MORE DOMINION OVER HIM。 Rom。 vi。 9。

。 Thus察by the strange and unusual assaults of the tempter察my soul was like a broken vessel察driven as with the winds察and tossed sometimes headlong into despair察sometimes upon the covenant of works察and sometimes to wish that the new covenant察and the conditions thereof察might so far forth察as I thought myself concerned察be turned another way察and changed察BUT IN ALL THESE察I WAS AS THOSE THAT JOSTLE AGAINST THE ROCKS察MORE BROKEN察SCATTERED AND RENT。 Oh the un´thought´of imaginations察frights察fears察and terrors察that are affected by a thorough application of guilt yielding to desperation THIS IS THE MAN THAT HATH HIS DWELLING AMONG THE TOMBS WITH THE DEAD察THAT IS ALWAYS CRYING OUT察AND CUTTING HIMSELF WITH STONES。 Mark v。 1察2察3。 But察I say察all in vain察desperation will not comfort him察the old covenant will not save him此 nay察heaven and earth shall pass away察before one jot or tittle of the word and law of grace will fail or be removed。 This I saw察this I felt察and under this I groaned察yet this advantage I got thereby察namely察a farther confirmation of the certainty of the way of salvation察and that the scriptures were the word of God。 Oh I cannot now express what then I saw and felt of the steadiness of Jesus Christ察the rock of man's salvation此 What was done察could not be undone察added to察nor altered。 I saw察indeed察that sin might drive the soul beyond Christ察even the sin which is unpardonable察but woe to him that was so driven察for the word would shut him out。

。 Thus I was always sinking察whatever I did think or do。 So one day I walked to a neighbouring town察and sate down upon a settle in the street察and fell into a very deep pause about the most fearful state my sin had brought me to察and after long musing察 I lifted up I sat my head察but methought I saw察as if the sun that shineth in the heavens did grudge to give light察and as if the very stones in the street察and tiles upon the houses察did bend themselves against me。 Methought that they all combined together to banish me out of the world。 I was abhorred of them察and unfit to dwell among them察or be partaker of their benefits察because I had sinned against the Saviour。 O how happy now was every creature over I was For they stood fast察and kept their station察but I was gone and lost。

。 Then breaking out in the bitterness of my soul察I said to myself with a grievous sigh察HOW CAN GOD COMFORT SUCH A WRETCH I had no sooner said it察but this returned upon me察as an echo doth answer a voice此 THIS SIN IS NOT UNTO DEATH。 At which I was察as if I had been raised out of the grave察and cried out again察LORD察HOW COULDST THOU FIND OUT SUCH A WORD AS THIS For I was filled with admiration at the fitness察and at the unexpectedness of the sentence察the fitness of the word察the rightness of the timing of it察the power察and sweetness察and light察and glory that came with it also察were marvellous to me to find此 I was now察for the time察 out of doubt察as to that about which I was so much in doubt before察 my fears before WERE察that my sin was not pardonable察and so that I had no right to pray察to repent察etc。察or that察if I did察it would be of no advantage or profit to me。 But now察thought I察if THIS SIN is not unto death察then it is pardonable察therefore from this I have encouragement to come to God by Christ for mercy察to consider the promise of forgiveness察as that which stands with open arms to receive me as well as others。 This therefore was a great easement to my mind察to wit察that my sin was pardonable察that it was not the sin unto death 1 John v。 16察17。 None but those that know what my trouble by their own experience was察can tell what relief came to my soul by this consideration此 it was a release to me from my former bonds察and a shelter from the former storm此 I seemed now to stand upon the same ground with other sinners察and to have as good right to the word and prayer as any of they。

。 Now I say察I was in hopes that my sin was not unpardonable察 but that there might be hopes for me to obtain forgiveness。 But oh how Satan did now lay about him for to bring me down again But he could by no means do it察neither this day察nor the most part of the next察for this good sentence stood like a mill´post at my back此 yet towards the evening of the next day察I felt this word begin to leave me察and to withdraw its supportation from me察and so I returned to my old fears again察but with a great deal of grudging and peevishness察for I feared the sorrow of despair察nor could my faith now long retain this word。

。 But the next day at evening察being under many fears察I went to seek the Lord察and as I prayed察I cried察and my soul cried to Him in these words察with strong cries此 O LORD察I BESEECH THEE察 SHOW ME THAT THOU HAST LOVED ME WITH EVERLASTING LOVE。 Jer。 xxxi。 3。 I had no sooner said it察but with sweetness this returned upon me察as an echo察or sounding again察I HAVE LOVED THEE WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE。 Now I went to bed in quiet察also when I awakened the next morning察it was fresh upon my soul察and I believed it。

。 But yet the tempter left me not察for it could not be so little as an hundred times察that he that day did labour to then break my peace。 Oh the combats and conflicts that I did then meet with察as I strove to hold by this word察that of ESAU would fly in my face like lightning此 I should be sometimes up and down twenty times in an hour察yet God did bear me up察and keep my heart upon this word察from which I had also察for several days together察very much sweetness察and comfortable hopes of pardon此 for thus it was made out unto me察I LOVED THEE WHILST THOU WAST COMMITTING THIS SIN察I LOVED THEE BEFORE察I LOVE THEE STILL察AND I WILL LOVE THEE FOR EVER。

。 Yet I saw my sin most barbarous察and a filthy crime察and could not but conclude察and that with great shame and astonishment察 that I had horribly abused the holy Son of God此 wherefore I felt my soul greatly to love and pity Him察and my bowels to yearn towards Him察for I saw He was still my friend察and did reward me good for evil察yea察the love and affection that then did burn within to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ察did work at this time such a strong and hot desire of revengement upon myself for the abuse I had done unto Him察that to speak as I then thought察had I had a thousand gallons of blood within my veins察I could freely then have spilt it all察at the command and feet of this my Lord and Saviour。

。 And as I was thus in musing察and in my studies察considering how to love the Lord察and to express my love to Him察that saying came in upon me察IF THOU察LORD察SHOULDST MARK INIQUITIES察O LORD察 WHO SHOULD STAND拭 BUT THERE IS FORGIVENESS WITH THEE察THAT THOU MAYEST BE FEARED。 Psalm cxxx。 3察4。 These were good words to me察 especially the latter part thereof察to wit察that there is forgiveness with the Lord察that He might be feared察that is察as then I understood it察that He might be loved察and had in reverence察 for it was thus made out to me察THAT THE GREAT GOD DID SET SO HIGH AN ESTEEM UPON THE LOVE OF HIS POOR CREATURES察THAT RATHER THAN HE WOULD GO WITHOUT THEIR LOVE察HE WOULD PARDON THEIR TRANSGRESSIONS。

。 And now was that word fulfilled on me察and I was also refreshed by it察THAT THOU MAYEST REMEMBER AND BE CONFOUNDED察AND NEVER OPEN THY MOUTH ANY MORE察BECAUSE OF THY SHAME察WHEN I AM PACIFIED TOWARD THEE FOR ALL THAT THOU HAST DONE察SAITH THE LORD GOD。 Ezek。 xvi。 63。 Thus was my soul at this time and as I then did think for ever set at liberty from being afflicted with my former guilt and amazement。

。 But before many weeks were gone察I began to despond again察 fearing察lest察notwithstanding all that I had enjoyed察that I might be deceived and destroyed at the last察for this consideration came strong into my mind察THAT WHATEVER COMFORT AND PEACE I THOUGHT I MIGHT HAVE FROM THE WORD OF THE PROMISE OF LIFE察YET UNLESS THERE COULD BE FOUND IN MY REFRESHMENT察A CONCURRENCE AND AGREEMENT IN THE SCRIPTURES察LET ME THINK WHAT I WILL THEREOF察AND HOLD IT NEVER SO FAST察I SHOULD FIND NO SUCH THING AT THE END察AND THE SCRIPTURE CANNOT BE BROKEN。 John x。 35。

。 Now began my heart again to ache察and fear I might meet with a disappointment at last。 Wherefore I began with all seriousness to examine my former comfort察and to consider whether one that had sinned as I had done察might with confidence trust upon the faithfulness of God察laid down in those words察by which I had been comforted察and on which I had leaned myself此 but now were brought those sayings to my mind。 FOR IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THOSE WHO WERE ONCE ENLIGHTENED察AND HAVE TASTED OF THE HEAVENLY GIFT察AND WERE MADE PARTAKERS OF THE HOLY GHOST察AND HAVE TASTED
