ES SHOULD MEET IN MY HEART AT ONCE察I WONDER WHICH OF THEM WOULD GET THE BETTER OF ME。 So methought I had a longing mind that they might come both together upon me察yea察I desired of God they might。
213。 Well察about two or three days after察so they did indeed察they bolted both upon me at a time察and did work and struggle strangely in me for a while察at last that about ESAU'S birthright began to wax weak察and withdraw察and vanish察and this察about the sufficiency of grace prevailed with peace and joy。 And as I was in a muse about this thing察that scripture came in upon me察MERCY REJOICETH AGAINST JUDGMENT。 James ii。 13。
214。 This was a wonderment to me察yet truly察I am apt to think it was of God察for the word of the law and wrath察must give place to the word of life and grace察because察though the word of condemnation be glorious察yet the word of life and salvation doth far exceed in glory。 2 Cor。 iii。 8´11。 MARK ix。 5´7。 JOHN vi。 37。 Also that MOSES and ELIAS must both vanish察and leave Christ and His saints alone。
215。 This scripture also did now most sweetly visit my soul察AND HIM THAT COMETH TO ME察I WILL IN NO WISE CAST OUT。 Oh the comfort that I had from this word察IN NO WISE As who should say察BY NO MEANS察FOR NOTHING WHATEVER HE HATH DONE。 But Satan would greatly labour to pull this promise from me察telling of me察THAT CHRIST DID NOT MEAN ME AND SUCH AS I察BUT SINNERS OF A LOWER RANK察THAT HAD NOT DONE AS I HAD DONE。 But I would answer him again察SATAN察HERE IS IN THESE WORDS NO SUCH EXCEPTION察BUT HIM THAT COMES察HIM察ANY HIM此 HIM THAT COMETH TO ME I WILL IN NO WISE CAST OUT。 And this I well remember still察that of all the slights that Satan used to take this scripture from me察yet he never did so much as put this question察BUT DO YOU COME ARIGHT拭 And I have thought the reason was察because he thought I knew full well what coming aright was察 for I saw that to come aright察was to come as I was察a vile and ungodly sinner察and to cast myself at the feet of mercy察condemning myself for sin。 If ever Satan and I did strive for any word of God in all my life察it was for this good word of Christ察he at one end察 and I at the other此 Oh what work did we make It was for this in JOHN察I say察that we did so tug and strive察he pulled察and I pulled察but God be praised察I got the better of him察I got some sweetness from it。
216。 But notwithstanding all these helps察and blessed words of grace察yet that of ESAU'S selling of his birthright察would still at times distress my conscience此 for though I had been most sweetly comforted察and that but just before察yet when that came into my mind察'twould make me fear again此 I could not be quite rid thereof察'twould every day be with me此 wherefore now I went another way to work察even to consider the nature of this blasphemous thought察I mean察if I should take the words at the largest察and give them their own natural force and scope察even every word therein此 so when I had thus considered察I found察that if they were fairly taken察they would amount to this察THAT I HAD FREELY LEFT THE LORD JESUS CHRIST TO HIS CHOICE察WHETHER HE WOULD BE MY SAVIOUR OR NO察for the wicked words were these察LET HIM GO察 IF HE WILL。 Then that scripture gave me hope察I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE察NOR FORSAKE THEE。 Heb。 xiii。 5。 'O Lord' said I察BUT I HAVE LEFT THEE。 Then it answered again察BUT I WILL NOT LEAVE THEE。 For this I thanked God also。
217。 Yet I was grievous afraid He should察and found it exceeding hard to trust Him察seeing I had so offended Him此 I could have been exceeding glad that this thought had never befallen察for then I thought I could with more ease and freedom in abundance察have leaned on His grace。 I saw it was with me察as it was with JOSEPH'S brethren察the guilt of their own wickedness did often fill them with fears that their brother would at last despise them。 Gen。 l。 15察16察etc。
218。 Yet above all the scriptures that I yet did meet with that in JOSHUA xx。 was the greatest comfort to me察which speaks of the slayer that was to flee for refuge此 AND IF THE AVENGER OF BLOOD PURSUE THE SLAYER察then saith MOSES察THEY THAT ARE THE ELDERS OF THE CITY OF REFUGE SHALL NOT DELIVER HIM INTO HIS HANDS察BECAUSE HE SMOTE HIS NEIGHBOUR UNWITTINGLY AND HATED HIM NOT AFORETIME。 Oh blessed be God for this word此 I was convinced that I was the slayer察and that the avenger of blood pursued me察I felt with great terror察only now it remained that I inquire whether I have right to enter the city of refuge此 so I found察that he must not察WHO LAY IN WAIT TO SHED BLOOD此 It was not the wilful MURDERER察but he who UNWITTINGLY did it察he who did it unawares察not out of spite察or grudge察or malice察he that shed it unwittingly此 even he who did not HATE HIS NEIGHBOUR BEFORE。 Wherefore
219。 I thought verily I was the man that must enter察because I had smitten my neighbour UNWITTINGLY察AND HATED HIM NOT AFORETIME。 I hated Him not aforetime察no察I prayed unto Him察was tender of sinning against Him察yea察and against this wicked temptation I had strove for a twelvemonth before察yea察and also when it did pass through my heart察it did in spite of my teeth此 wherefore I thought I had a right to enter this city察and the elders察which are the APOSTLES察were not to deliver me up。 This therefore was great comfort to me察and gave me much ground of hope。
220。 Yet being very critical察for my smart had made me that I knew not what ground was sure enough to bear me察I had one question that my soul did much desire to be resolved about察and that was察WHETHER IT BE POSSIBLE FOR ANY SOUL THAT HATH SINNED THE UNPARDONABLE SIN察 YET AFTER THAT TO RECEIVE察THOUGH BUT THE LEAST察TRUE SPIRITUAL COMFORT FROM GOD THOUGH CHRIST拭 The which after I had much considered察I found the answer was察No察they could not察and that for these reasons此
221。 FIRST察Because those that have sinned that sin察they are debarred a share in the blood of Christ察and being shut out of that察they must needs be void of the least ground of hope察and so of spiritual comfort察FOR TO SUCH THERE REMAINS NO MORE SACRIFICE FOR SIN。 Heb。 x。 26察27。 SECONDLY察Because they are denied a share in the promise of life此 IT SHALL NEVER BE FORGIVEN HIM NEITHER IN THIS WORLD察NEITHER IN THE WORLD TO COME。 Matt。 xii。 32。 THIRDLY察The Son of God excludes them also from a share in His blessed intercession察being for ever ashamed to own them察both before His holy Father察and the blessed angels in heaven。 Mark viii。
222。 When I had with much deliberation considered of this matter察 and could not but conclude that the Lord had comforted me察and that too after this my wicked sin此 then methought I durst venture to come nigh unto those most fearful and terrible scriptures察with which all this while I had been so greatly affrighted察and on which indeed察before I durst scarce cast mine eye yea察had much ado an hundred times察to forbear wishing them out of the Bible察for I thought they would destroy me察but now察I say察I began to take some measure of encouragement察to come close to them to read them察and consider them察and to weigh their scope and tendency。
223。 The which when I began to do察I found their visage changed此 for they looked not so grimly察as before I thought they did此 and first I came to the sixth of the HEBREWS察yet trembling for fear it should strike me察which when I had considered察I found that the falling there intended察was a falling QUITE AWAY察that is as I conceived察a falling from and absolute denying of the gospel察of remission of sins by Jesus Christ察for察from them the apostle begins his argument察verses 1察2察3察4。 SECONDLY察I found that this falling away察must be openly察even in the view of the world察 even so as TO PUT CHRIST TO AN OPEN SHAME。 THIRDLY察I found those he there intended察were for ever shut up of God察both in blindness察 hardness察and impenitency此 IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THEY SHOULD BE RENEWED AGAIN UNTO REPENTANCE。 By all these particulars察I found to God's everlasting praise察my sin was not the sin in this place intended。
FIRST察I confessed I was fallen察but not fallen away察that is察from the profession of faith in Jesus unto eternal life。
SECONDLY察I confessed that I had put Jesus Christ to SHAME by my sin察but not to open SHAME察I did not deny Him before men察nor condemn Him as a fruitless One before the world。
THIRDLY察Nor did I find that God had shut me up察or denied me to come though I found it hard work indeed to come to Him by sorrow and repentance此 blessed be God for unsearchable grace
224。 Then I considered that in the 10th chapter of the HEBREWS察 and found that the WILFUL SIN there mentioned察is not every wilful sin察but that which doth throw off Christ察and then His commandments too。 SECONDLY察That must be done also openly察before two or three witnesses察to answer that of the law察VERSE 28。 THIRDLY察This sin cannot be committed察but with great despite done to the Spirit of Grace察despising both the dissuasions from that sin察and the persuasions to the contrary。 But the Lord knows察 though this my sin was devilish察yet it did not amount to these。
225。 And as touching that in the 12th of the HEBREWS察about ESAU'S selling of his birthright察though this was that which killed me察 and stood like a spear against me察yet now I did consider察FIRST察 that his was not a hasty thought against the continual labour of his mind察but a thought consented to察and put in practice likewise察 and that after some deliberation察Gen。 xxv。 SECONDLY察It was a public and open action察even before his brother察if not before many more察this made his sin of a far more heinous nature than otherwise it would have been。 THIRDLY察He continued to slight his birthright此 HE DID EAT AND DRINK察AND WENT HIS WAY此 thus Esau DESPISED HIS BIRTHRIGHT察yea察twenty years after he was found to despise it still。 And Esau said察I HAVE ENOUGH察MY BROTHER察KEEP THAT THOU HAST UNTO THYSELF。 Gen。 xxxiii。 9。
226。 Now as touching this察THAT Esau SOUGHT A PLACE OF REPENTANCE察 thus I thought此 FIRST察This was not for the BIRTHRIGHT察but THE BLESSING此 this is clear from the apostle察and is distinguished by Esau himself察HE TOOK AWAY MY BIRTHRIGHT that is察formerly察AND BEHOLD NOW HE HATH TAKEN AWAY MY BLESSING。 Gen。 xxvii。 36。 SECONDLY察Now察this being thus considered察I came again to the apostle察to see what might be the mind of God察in a New´Testament style and sense concerning ESAU'S sin察and so far as I could conceive察this was the mind of God察THAT THE BIRTHRIGHT signified REGENERATION察and the BLESSING察the ETERNAL INHERITANCE察for so the apostle seems to hint。 LEST THERE BE ANY PROFANE PERSON察AS Esau察 WHO FOR ONE MORSEL OF MEAT SOLD HIS BIRTHRIGHT察as if he should say察That shall cast off all those blessed beginnings of God察that at present are upon him察in order to a new´birth察lest they become as ESAU察even be rejected AFTERWARDS察when they would inherit the blessing。
227。 For many there are察who察in the day of grace and mercy察 despise those things which are indeed the birthright to heaven察who yet when the deciding day appears察will cry as lord as ESAU
