前言　　现代化与传统文化的关系问题，是若干年来学术界争论得十分热烈的一个话题。记得有一年在曲阜开儒学国际学术讨论会，曾在大会之外开过一个小型座谈会，题目叫"传统文化与现代化"。我曾对召集人建议，题目似应叫做"现代化与传统文化"，意谓在实现现代化的过程中，如何对待传统文化。这个建议是否被接受，我不管。在会上，发言者都是不同程度地肯定传统文化的。但对传统文化本身，各人有不同的理解，这也很自然。记得有一位年轻学者提出一个看法：优秀的东西未曾成为传统，传统的东西未必优秀。　　我体会他的意思是，这里说的传统，指的是官方所提倡的传统。因为他所举的例子是，清代乾隆年间编《四库全书》，扼杀了不少有价值的东西。　　照我的理解，文化传统不只是一个。官方提倡的固然是传统；非官方的，学术界自身也有传统。从历史发展来看，总是先有学术界自身发展起来的传统，然后才被官方所承认，成为占统治地位的传...
