guess now察that you are in secret a very charitable man。;

The dealer looked closely at his companion。 It was very odd察

Markheim did not appear to be laughing察there was something in his face

like an eager sparkle of hope察but nothing of mirth。

;What are you driving at拭─the dealer asked。

;Not charitable拭─ returned the other察 gloomily。 ;Not charitable察 not

pious察not scrupulous察unloving察unbeloved察a hand to get money察a safe to

keep it。 Is that all拭Dear God察man察is that all拭─

;I will tell you what it is察─began the dealer察with some sharpness察and

then broke off again into a chuckle。 ;But I see this is a love match of yours察

and you have been drinking the lady's health。;

;Ah ─cried Markheim察with a strange curiosity。 ;Ah察have you been in

love拭Tell me about that。;

;I察─cried the dealer。 ;I in love I never had the time察 nor have I the

time to´day for all this nonsense。 Will you take the glass拭─

;Where is the hurry拭─returned Markheim。 ;It is very pleasant to stand

here talking察and life is so short and insecure that I would not hurry away

from any pleasureno察 not even from so mild a one as this。 We should

rather cling察 cling to what little we can get察 like a man at a cliff's edge。

Every second is a cliff察 if you think upon ita cliff a mile highhigh

enough察if we fall察to dash us out of every feature of humanity。 Hence it is

best to talk pleasantly。 Let us talk of each other察why should we wear this

mask拭Let us be confidential。 Who knows拭we might become friends。;

;I have just one word to say to you察─said the dealer。 ;Either make your

purchase察or walk out of my shop。;

     ;True察true察─said Markheim。 ;Enough fooling。 To business。 Show me

something else。;

The dealer stooped once more察this time to replace the glass upon the

shelf察 his thin blond hair falling over his eyes as he did so。 Markheim

moved a little nearer察with one hand in the pocket of his greatcoat察he drew

himself up and filled his lungs察at the same time many different emotions

were depicted together on his faceterror察horror察and resolve察fascination

and a physical repulsion察and through a haggard lift of his upper lip察his

teeth looked out。

;This察perhaps察may suit察─observed the dealer。 And then察as he began

to rearise察 Markheim bounded from behind upon his victim。 The long察

skewer´like dagger flashed and fell。 The dealer struggled like a hen察

striking his temple on the shelf察and then tumbled on the floor in a heap。

Time had some score of small voices in that shopsome stately and

slow as was becoming to their great age察others garrulous and hurried。 All

these told out the seconds in an intricate chorus of tickings。 Then the

passage of a lad's feet察 heavily running on the pavement察 broke in upon

these smaller voices and startled Markheim into the consciousness of his

surroundings。 He looked about him awfully。 The candle stood on the

counter察 its flame solemnly wagging in a draught察 and by that

inconsiderable movement the whole room was filled with noiseless bustle

and kept heaving like a sea此the tall shadows nodding察the gross blots of

darkness swelling and dwindling as with respiration察 the faces of the

portraits and the china gods changing and wavering like images in water。

The inner door stood ajar察and peered into that leaguer of shadows with a

long slit of daylight like a pointing finger。

From these fear´stricken rovings察 Markheim's eyes returned to the

body of his victim察 where it lay察both humped and sprawling察incredibly

small and strangely meaner than in life。 In these poor察miserly clothes察in

that ungainly attitude察the dealer lay like so much sawdust。 Markheim had

feared to see it察and察lo it was nothing。 And yet察as he gazed察this bundle

of old clothes and pool of blood began to find eloquent voices。 There it

must lie察there was none to work the cunning hinges or direct the miracle

of locomotion察 there it must lie till it was found。 Found ay察 and then拭

Then would this dead flesh lift up a cry that would ring over England察and

fill the world with the echoes of pursuit。 Ay察dead or not察this was still the

enemy。 ;Time was that when the brains were out察─he thought察and the first

word struck into his mind。 Time察 now that the deed was accomplished

time察which had closed for the victim察had become instant and momentous

for the slayer。

The thought was yet in his mind察 when察 first one and then another察

with every variety of pace and voiceone deep as the bell from a cathedral

turret察another ringing on its treble notes the prelude of a waltzthe clocks

began to strike the hour of three in the afternoon。

The sudden outbreak of so many tongues in that dumb chamber

staggered him。 He began to bestir himself察going to and fro with the candle察

beleaguered by moving shadows察 and startled to the soul by chance

reflections。 In many rich mirrors察some of home design察some from Venice

or Amsterdam察he saw his face repeated and repeated察as it were an army

of spies察 his own eyes met and detected him察 and the sound of his own

steps察 lightly as they fell察 vexed the surrounding quiet。 And still察 as he

continued to fill his pockets察 his mind accused him with a sickening

iteration察 of the thousand faults of his design。 He should have chosen a

more quiet hour察 he should have prepared an alibi察 he should not have

used a knife察 he should have been more cautious察 and only bound and

gagged the dealer察and not killed him察he should have been more bold察and

killed the servant also察he should have done all things otherwise。 Poignant

regrets察 weary察 incessant toiling of the mind to change what was

unchangeable察 to plan what was now useless察 to be the architect of the

irrevocable past。 Meanwhile察and behind all this activity察brute terrors察like

the scurrying of rats in a deserted attic察filled the more remote chambers of

his brain with riot察 the hand of the constable would fall heavy on his

shoulder察 and his nerves would jerk like a hooked fish察or he beheld察in

galloping defile察the dock察the prison察the gallows察and the black coffin。

Terror of the people in the street sat down before his mind like a

besieging army。 It was impossible察he thought察but that some rumour of the

struggle must have reached their ears and set on edge their curiosity察and

now察 in all the neighbouring houses察 he divined them sitting motionless

and with uplifted earsolitary people察 condemned to spend Christmas

dwelling alone on memories of the past察and now startingly recalled from

that tender exercise察 happy family parties struck into silence round the

table察the mother still with raised fingerevery degree and age and humour察

but all察by their own hearths察prying and hearkening and weaving the rope

that was to hang him。 Sometimes it seemed to him he could not move too

softly察the clink of the tall Bohemian goblets rang out loudly like a bell察

and alarmed by the bigness of the ticking察 he was tempted to stop the

clocks。 And then察 again察 with a swift transition of his terrors察 the very

silence of the place appeared a source of peril察and a thing to strike and

freeze the passer´by察 and he would step more boldly察 and bustle aloud

among the contents of the shop察and imitate察with elaborate bravado察the

movements of a busy man at ease in his own house。

But he was now so pulled about by different alarms that察 while one

portion of his mind was still alert and cunning察 another trembled on the

brink of lunacy。 One hallucination in particular took a strong hold on his

credulity。 The neighbour hearkening with white face beside his window察

the passer´by arrested by a horrible surmise on the pavementthese could

at worst suspect察 they could not know察 through the brick walls and

shuttered windows only sounds could penetrate。 But here察within the house察

was he alone拭 He knew he was察 he had watched the servant set forth

sweet´hearting察in her poor best察 out for the day; written in every ribbon

and smile。 Yes察 he was alone察 of course察 and yet察 in the bulk of empty

house above him察he could surely hear a stir of delicate footing察he was

surely conscious察inexplicably conscious of some presence。 Ay察surely察to

every room and corner of the house his imagination followed it察and now

it was a faceless thing察and yet had eyes to see with察and again it was a

shadow of himself察 and yet again behold the image of the dead dealer察

reinspired with cunning and hatred。
