and kindness about me察and on that account it was that I took
thee for my confederate察however察what I have done does not
please the commanders of the Philistines察go therefore within a
day's time to the place I have given thee察without suspecting any
harm察and there keep my country察lest any of our enemies should
make an incursion upon it察which will be one part of that
assistance which I expect from thee。; So David came to Ziklag察as
the king of Gath bade him察but it happened察that while he was
gone to the assistance of the Philistines察the Amalekites had
made an incursion察and taken Ziklag before察and had burnt it察and
when they had taken a great deal of other prey out of that place
and out of the other parts of the Philistines' country察they
departed。
6。 Now when David found that Ziklag was laid waste察and that it
was all spoiled察and that as well his own wives察who were two察as
the wives of his companions察with their children察were made
captives察he presently rent his clothes察weeping and lamenting
together with his friends察and indeed he was so cast down with
these misfortunes察that at length tears themselves failed him。 He
was also in danger of being stoned to death by his companions
who were greatly afflicted at the captivity of their wives and
children察for they laid the blame upon him of what had happened。
But when he had recovered himself out of his grief察and had
raised up his mind to God察he desired the high priest Abiathar to
put on his sacerdotal garments察and to inquire of God察and to
prophesy to him察whether God would grant察that if he pursued
after the Amalekites察he should overtake them察and save their
wives and their children察and avenge himself on the enemies。 And
when the high priest bade him to pursue after them察he marched
apace察with his four hundred men察after the enemy察and when he
was come to a certain brook called Besor察and had lighted upon
one that was wandering about察an Egyptian by birth察who was
almost dead with want and famine察。for he had continued wandering
about without food in the wilderness three days撮 he first of all
gave him sustenance察both meat and drink察and thereby refreshed
him。 He then asked him to whom he belonged察and whence he came。
Whereupon the man told him he was an Egyptian by birth察and was
left behind by his master察because he was so sick and weak that
he could not follow him。 He also informed him that he was one of
those who had burnt and plundered察not only other parts of Judea
but Ziklag itself also。 So David made use of him as a guide to
find oat the Amalekites察and when he had overtaken them察as they
lay scattered about on the ground察some at dinner察some
disordered察and entirely drunk with wine察and in the fruition of
their spoils and their prey察he fell upon them on the sudden察and
made a great slaughter among them察for they were naked察and
expected no such thing察but had betaken themselves to drinking
and feasting察and so they were all easily destroyed。 Now some of
them that were overtaken as they lay at the table were slain in
that posture察and their blood brought up with it their meat and
their drink。 They slew others of them as they were drinking to
one another in their cups察and some of them when their full
bellies had made them fall asleep察and for so many as had time to
put on their armor察they slew them with the sword察with no less
case than they did those that were naked察and for the partisans
of David察they continued also the slaughter from the first hour
of the day to the evening察so that there were察not above four
hundred of the Amalekites left察and they only escaped by getting
upon their dromedaries and camels。 Accordingly David recovered
not only all the other spoils which the enemy had carried away
but his wives also察and the wives of his companions。 But when
they were come to the place where they had left the two hundred
men察which were not able to follow them察but were left to take
care of the stuff察the four hundred men did not think fit to
divide among them any other parts of what they had gotten察or of
the prey察since they did not accompany them察but pretended to be
feeble察and did not follow them in pursuit of the enemy察but said
they should be contented to have safely recovered their wives
yet did David pronounce that this opinion of theirs was evil and
unjust察and that when God had granted them such a favor察that
they had avenged themselves on their enemies察and had recovered
all that belonged to themselves察they should make an equal
distribution of what they had gotten to all察because the rest had
tarried behind to guard their stuff察and from that time this law
obtained among them察that those who guarded the stuff察should
receive an equal share with those that fought in the battle。 Now
when David was come to Ziklag察he sent portions of the spoils to
all that had been familiar with him察and to his friends in the
tribe of Judah。 And thus ended the affairs of the plundering of
Ziklag察and of the slaughter of the Amalekites。
7。 Now upon the Philistines joining battle察there followed a
sharp engagement察and the Philistine察became the conquerors察and
slew a great number of their enemies察but Saul the king of
Israel察and his sons察fought courageously察and with the utmost
alacrity察as knowing that their entire glory lay in nothing else
but dying honorably察and exposing themselves to the utmost danger
from the enemy for they had nothing else to hope for察so they
brought upon themselves the whole power of the enemy察till they
were encompassed round and slain察but not before they had killed
many of the Philistines Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan察and
Abinadab察and Malchisua察and when these were slain the multitude
of the Hebrews were put to flight察and all was disorder察and
confusion察and slaughter察upon the Philistines pressing in upon
them。 But Saul himself fled察having a strong body of soldiers
about him察and upon the Philistines sending after them those that
threw javelins and shot arrows察he lost all his company except a
few。 As for himself察he fought with great bravery察and when he
had received so many wounds察that he was not able to bear up nor
to oppose any longer察and yet was not able to kill himself察he
bade his armor´bearer draw his sword察and run him through察before
the enemy should take him alive。 But his armor´bearer not daring
to kill his master察he drew his own sword察and placing himself
over against its point察he threw himself upon it察and when he
could neither run it through him察nor察by leaning against it
make the sword pass through him察he turned him round察and asked a
certain young man that stood by who he was察and when he
understood that he was an Amalekite察he desired him to force the
sword through him察because he was not able to do it with his own
hands察and thereby to procure him such a death as he desired。
This the young man did accordingly察and he took the golden
bracelet that was on Saul's arm察and his royal crown that was on
his head察and ran away。 And when Saul's armor´bearer saw that he
was slain察he killed himself察nor did any of the king's guards
escape察but they all fell upon the mountain called Gilboa。 But
when those Hebrews that dwelt in the valley beyond Jordan察and
those who had their cities in the plain察heard that Saul and his
sons were fallen察and that the multitude about them were
destroyed察they left their own cities察and fled to such as were
the best fortified and fenced察and the Philistines察finding those
cities deserted察came and dwelt in them。
8。 On the next day察when the Philistines came to strip their
enemies that were slain察they got the bodies of Saul and of his
sons察and stripped them察and cut off their heads察and they sent
messengers all about their country察to acquaint them that their
enemies were fallen察and they dedicated their armor in the temple
of Astarte察but hung their bodies on crosses at the walls of the
city Bethshun察which is now called Scythepolls。 But when the
inhabitants of Jabesh´Gilead heard that they had dismembered the
dead bodies of Saul and of his sons察they deemed it so horrid a
thing to overlook this barbarity察and to suffer them to be
without funeral rites察that the most courageous and hardy among
them and indeed that city had in it men that were very stout
both in body and mind journeyed all night察and came to Bethshun
and approached to the enemy's wall察and taking down the bodies of
Saul and of his sons察they carried them to Jabesh察while the
enemy were not able enough nor bold enough to hinder them
because of their great courage。 So the people of Jabesh wept all
in general察and buried their bodies in the best place of their
country察which was named Areurn察and they observed a public
mourning for them seven days察with their wives and children
beating their breasts察and lamenting the king and his sons
without either tasting meat or drink 29 till the evening。
9。 To this his end did Saul come察according to the prophecy of
Samuel察because he disobeyed the commands of God about the
Amalekites察and on the account of his destroying the family of
Ahimelech the high priest察with Ahimelech himself察and the city
of the high priests。 Now Saul察when he had reigned eighteen years
while Samuel was alive察and after his death two and twentyВ
ended his life in this manner。
BOOK VII。
Containing The Interval Of Forty Years。
From The Death Of Saul To The Death Of David。
CHAPTER 1。
How David Reigned Over One Tribe At Hebron While The Son Of Saul
Reigned Over The Rest Of The Multitude察And How察In The Civil War
Which Then Arose Asahel And Abner Were Slain。
1。 This fight proved to be on the same day whereon David was come
back to Ziklag察after he had overcome the Amalekites。 Now when he
had been already two days at Ziklag察there came to him the man
who slew Saul察which was the third day after the fight。 He had
escaped out of the battle which the Israelites had with the
Philistines察and had his clothes rent察and ashes upon his head。
And when he made his obeisance to David察he inquired of him
whence he came。 He replied察from the battle of the Israelites
and he informed him that the end of it was unfortunate察many ten
thousands of the Israelites having been cut off察and Saul
together with his sons察slain。 He also said that he could well
give him this information察because he was present at the victory
gained over the Hebrews察and was with the king when he fled。 Nor
did he deny that he had himself slain the king察when he was ready
to be taken by the enemy察and he himself exhorted him to do it
because察when he was fallen on his sword察his great wounds had
made him so weak that he was not able to kill himself。 He also
produced demonstrations that the king was slain察which were the
golden bracelets that had been on the king's arms察and his crown
which he had taken away from Saul's dead body察and had brought
them to him。 So David having no longer any room to call in
question the truth of what he said察but seeing most evident marks
that Saul was dead察he rent his garments察and continued all that
day with his companions in weeping and lamentation。 This grief
was augmented by the consideration of Jonatha
