On the contrary察what shall I say of the House´Cock察which treads any
hen察and察then察contrary to the Swan察the Partridge察and Pigeon察takes no
care to hatch察to feed察or cherish his own brood察but is senseless察though
they perish。 And it is considerable察that the Hen察which察because she also
takes any Cock察expects it not察who is sure the chickens be her own察hath
by a moral impression her care and affection to her own brood more than
doubled察even to such a height察that our Saviour察in expressing his love to
Jerusalem察quotes her察for an example of tender affection察as his Father had
done Job察for a pattern of patience。
And to parallel this Cock察there be divers fishes that cast their spawn
on flags or stones察and then leave it uncovered察and exposed to become a
prey and be devoured by vermin or other fishes。 But other fishes察 as
namely the Barbel察take such care for the preservation of their seed察that察
unlike to the Cock察or the Cuckoo察they mutually labour察both the spawner
and the melter察to cover their spawn with sand察or watch it察or hide it in
some secret place unfrequented by vermin or by any fish but themselves。
Sir察these examples may察to you and others察seem strange察but they are
testified察some by Aristotle察some by Pliny察some by Gesner察and by many
others of credit察 and are believed and known by divers察 both of wisdom
and experience察to be a truth察and indeed are察as I said at the beginning察fit
for the contemplation of a most serious and a most pious man。 And察
doubtless察this made the prophet David say察 ─They that occupy themselves
in deep waters察see the wonderful works of God ;此indeed such wonders
and pleasures too察as the land affords not。
And that they be fit for the contemplation of the most prudent察 and
pious察and peaceable men察seems to be testified by the practice of so many

devout and contemplative men察as the Patriarchs and Prophets of old察and
of the Apostles of our Saviour in our latter times察of which twelve察we are
sure察 he chose four that were simple fishermen察 whom he inspired察 and
sent to publish his blessed will to the Gentiles 察 and inspired them also
with a power to speak all languages察and by their powerful eloquence to
beget faith in the unbelieving Jews察 and themselves to suffer for that
Saviour察 whom their forefathers and they had crucified察 and察 in their
sufferings察to preach freedom from the incumbrances of the law察and a new
way to everlasting life此this was the employment of these happy fishermen。
Concerning which choice。 some have made these observations此
First察that he never reproved these察for their employment or calling察as
he did the Scribes and the Money´changers。 And secondly察he found that
the hearts of such men察 by nature察 were fitted for contemplation and
quietness察men of mild察and sweet察and peaceable spirits察as indeed most
Anglers are此 these men our blessed Saviour察 who is observed to love to
plant grace in good natures察though indeed nothing be too hard for him察
yet these men he chose to call from their irreprovable employment of fig察
an察 and gave them grace to be his disciples察 and to follow him察 and do
wonders察I say four of twelve。
And it is observable察that it was our Saviour's will that these察our four
fishermen察 should have a priority of nomination in the catalogue of his
twelve Apostles察as namely察first St。 Peter察St。 Andrew察St。 James察and St。
John察and察then察the rest in their order。
And it is yet more observable察that when our blessed Saviour went up
into the mount察when he left the rest of his disciples察and chose only three
to bear him company at his Transfiguration察 that those three were all
fishermen。 And it is to be believed察that all the other Apostles察after they
betook themselves to follow Christ察betook themselves to be fishermen too察
for it is certain察 that the greater number of them were found together察
fishing察by Jesus after his resurrection察as it is recorded in the twenty´first
chapter of St。 John's gospel。
And since I have your promise to hear me with patience察I will take a
liberty to look back upon an observation that hath been made by an
ingenious and learned man察who observes察that God hath been pleased to

allow those whom he himself hath appointed to write his holy will in holy
writ察yet to express his will in such metaphors as their former affections or
practice had inclined them to。 And he brings Solomon for an example察
who察before his conversion察was remarkably carnally amorous察and after察
by God's appointment察wrote that spiritual dialogue察or holy amorous love´
song the Canticles察betwixt God and his church此in which he says察 ─ his
beloved had eyes like the fish´pools of Heshbon ;。
And if this hold in reason察as I see none to the contrary察then it may be
probably concluded察that Moses察who I told you before writ the book of
Job察and the Prophet Amos察who was a shepherd察were both Anglers察for
you shall察 in all the Old Testament察 find fish´hooks察 I think but twice
mentioned察namely察by meek Moses the friend of God察and by the humble
prophet Amos。
Concerning which last察namely the prophet Amos察I shall make but this
observation察that he that shall read the humble察lowly察plain style of that
prophet察 and compare it with the high察 glorious察 eloquent style of the
prophet Isaiah察though they be both equally true察may easily believe Amos
to be察not only a shepherd察but a good´natured plain fisherman。 Which I do
the rather believe察 by comparing the affectionate察 loving察 lowly察 humble
Epistles of St。 Peter察 St。 James察 and St。 John察 whom we know were all
fishers察with the glorious language and high metaphors of St。 Paul察 who
we may believe was not。
And for the lawfulness of fishing此it may very well be maintained by
our Saviour's bidding St。 Peter cast his hook into the water and catch a fish察
for money to pay tribute to Caesar。 And let me tell you察that Angling is of
high esteem察and of much use in other nations。 He that reads the Voyages
of Ferdinand Mendez Pinto察shall find that there he declares to have found
a king and several priests a´fishing。 And he that reads Plutarch察shall find察
that Angling was not contemptible in the days of Mark Antony and
Cleopatra察 and that they察 in the midst of their wonderful glory察 used
Angling as a principal recreation。 And let me tell you察that in the Scripture察
Angling is always taken in the best sense察and that though hunting may be
sometimes so taken察yet it is but seldom to be so understood。 And let me
add this more此he that views the ancient Ecclesiastical Canons察shall find

hunting to be forbidden to Churchmen察 as being a turbulent察 toilsome察
perplexing recreation察 and shall find Angling allowed to clergymen察 as
being a harmless recreation察 a recreation that invites them to
contemplation and quietness。
I might here enlarge myself察by telling you what commendations our
learned Perkins bestows on Angling此 and how dear a lover察 and great a
practiser of it察 our learned Dr。 Whitaker was察 as indeed many others of
great learning have been。 But I will content myself with two memorable
men察 that lived near to our own time察 whom I also take to have been
ornaments to the art of Angling。
The first is Dr。 Nowel察sometime dean of the cathedral church of St。
Paul察in London察where his monument stands yet undefaced察a man that察in
the reformation of Queen Elizabeth察not that of Henry VIII。察was so noted
for his meek spirit察 deep learning察 prudence察 and piety察 that the then
Parliament and Convocation察both察chose察enjoined察and trusted him to be
the man to make a Catechism for public use察such a one as should stand as
a rule for faith and manners to their posterity。 And the good old man察
though he was very learned察yet knowing that God leads us not to heaven
by many察 nor by hard questions察like an honest Angler察 made that good察
plain察unperplexed Catechism which is printed with our good old Service´
book。 I say察 this good man was a dear lover and constant practiser of
Angling察as any age can produce此and his custom was to spend besides his
fixed hours of prayer察those hours which察by command of the church察were
enjoined the clergy察 and voluntarily dedicated to devotion by many
primitive Christians察 I say察 besides those hours察 this good man was
observed to spend a tenth part of his time in Angling察and察also察for I have
conversed with those which have conversed with him察to bestow a tenth
part of his revenue察 and usually all his fish察 amongst the poor that
inhabited near to those rivers in which it was caught察saying often察 that
charity gave life to religion ;此and察at his return to his house察would praise
God he had spent that day free from worldly trouble察both harmlessly察and
in a recreation that became a churchman。 And this good man was well
content察if not desirous察that posterity should know he was an Angler察as
may appear by his picture察now to be seen察and carefully kept察in Brazen´
