them。;

     ;It's heartlessso it is ─ said Mrs。 Peyton察 with sudden indignation。

;It would be all very well if it was only this boy察 who can take care of

himself察but to be so careless of a mere baby like this察it's shameful ─

     For the first time Clarence tasted the cruelty of discrimination。 All the

more keenly that he was beginning to worship察 after his boyish fashion察

this   sweet´faced察  clean察  and   tender´hearted   woman。   Perhaps   Mr。   Peyton

noticed it察for he came quietly to his aid。

     ;Maybe they knew better than we in what careful hands they had left

her察─ he said察 with a cheerful nod towards Clarence。 ;And察 again察 they

may have been fooled as we were by Injin signs and left the straight road。;

     This suggestion instantly recalled to Clarence his vision in the

mesquite。 Should he dare tell them拭 Would they believe him察or would

they laugh at him before her拭 He hesitated察and at last resolved to tell it

privately to the husband。 When the meal was ended察and he was made

happy by Mrs。 Peyton's laughing acceptance of his offer to help her clear

the table and wash the dishes察they all gathered comfortably in front of the

tent before the large camp fire。 At the other fire the rest of the party were

playing cards and laughing察 but Clarence no longer cared to join them。

He was quite tranquil in the maternal propinquity of his hostess察albeit a

little uneasy as to his reticence about the Indian。

     ;Kla'uns察─ said Susy察 relieving a momentary pause察 in her highest

voice察 knows how to speak。            Speak察Kla'uns ─

     It appearing from Clarence's blushing explanation that this gift was not

the ordinary faculty of speech察 but a capacity to recite verse察 he was

politely pressed by the company for a performance。

     ;Speak 'em察 Kla'uns察 the boy what stood unto the burnin' deck察 and

said察'The boy察oh察where was he'; said Susy察comfortably lying down on

Mrs。 Peyton's lap察and contemplating her bare knees in the air。 ;It's 'bout

a boy察─ she added confidentially to Mrs。 Peyton察 whose father wouldn't

never察never stay with him on a burnin' ship察though he said察'Stay察father察

stay' ever so much。;

     With this clear察 lucid察 and perfectly satisfactory explanation of Mrs。

Hemans's       ;Casabianca察─      Clarence     began。      Unfortunately察      his   actual

rendering of this popular school performance was more an effort of

memory than anything else察and was illustrated by those wooden gestures

which a Western schoolmaster had taught him。 He described the flames

that ;roared around him察─by indicating with his hand a perfect circle察of

which he was the axis察he adjured his father察the late Admiral Casabianca察

by clasping his hands before his chin察as if wanting to be manacled in an

attitude which he was miserably conscious was unlike anything he himself

had ever felt or seen before察 he described that father ;faint in death

below察─and ;the flag on high察─with one single motion。 Yet something

that the verses had kindled in his active imagination察perhaps察rather than

an illustration of the verses themselves察at times brightened his gray eyes察

became tremulous in his youthful voice察and I fear occasionally incoherent

on his lips。 At times察 when not conscious of his affected art察 the plain

and all upon it seemed to him to slip away into the night察the blazing camp

fire at his feet to wrap him in a fateful glory察 and a vague devotion to

somethinghe knew not whatso possessed him that he communicated it察

and probably some of his own youthful delight in extravagant voice察to his

hearers察until察 when he ceased with a glowing face察 he was surprised to

find that the card players had deserted their camp fires and gathered round

the tent。

                               CHAPTER V

       ;You didn't say 'Stay察 father察 stay' enough察 Kla'uns察─ said Susy

critically。 Then suddenly starting upright in Mrs。 Peyton's lap察 she

continued rapidly察 I kin dance。 And sing。 I kin dance High

Jambooree。;

     ;What's High Jambooree察dear拭─asked Mrs。 Peyton。

     ;You'll see。 Lemme down。; And Susy slipped to the ground。

     The dance of High Jambooree察 evidently of remote mystical African

origin察appeared to consist of three small skips to the right and then to the

left察 accompanied by the holding up of very short skirts察 incessant

;teetering; on the toes of small feet察the exhibition of much bare knee and

stocking察 and a gurgling accompaniment of childish laughter。

Vehemently applauded察it left the little performer breathless察but invincible

and ready for fresh conquest。

     ;I kin sing察too察─she gasped hurriedly察as if unwilling that the applause

should lapse。 ;I kin sing。 Oh察dear Kla'uns察─piteously察 WHAT is it

I sing拭─

     ;Ben Bolt察─suggested Clarence。

     ;Oh察 yes。 Oh察 don't you remember sweet Alers Ben Bolt拭─ began

Susy察in the same breath and the wrong key。 ;Sweet Alers察with hair so

brown察 who wept with delight when you giv'd her a smile察 and; with

knitted brows and appealing recitative察 what's er rest of it察Kla'uns拭─

     ;Who trembled with fear at your frown拭─prompted Clarence。

     ;Who trembled with fear at my frown拭─ shrilled Susy。 ;I forget er

rest。   Wait     I kin sing;

     ;Praise God察─suggested Clarence。

     ;Yes。; Here Susy察a regular attendant in camp and prayer´meetings察

was on firmer ground。

     Promptly lifting her high treble察 yet with a certain acquired

deliberation察she began察 Praise God察from whom all blessings flow。; At

the end of the second line the whispering and laughing ceased。 A deep

voice to the right察that of the champion poker player察suddenly rose on the

swell of the third line。 He was instantly followed by a dozen ringing

voices察and by the time the last line was reached it was given with a full

chorus察in which the dull chant of teamsters and drivers mingled with the

soprano of Mrs。 Peyton and Susy's childish treble。 Again and again it

was repeated察with forgetful eyes and abstracted faces察rising and falling

with the night wind and the leap and gleam of the camp fires察and fading

again like them in the immeasurable mystery of the darkened plain。

     In the deep and embarrassing silence that followed察 at last the party

hesitatingly broke up察 Mrs。 Peyton retiring with Susy after offering the

child to Clarence for a perfunctory ;good´night; kiss察 an unusual

proceeding察 which somewhat astonished them bothand Clarence found

himself near Mr。 Peyton。

     ;I think察─said Clarence timidly察 I saw an Injin to´day。;

     Mr。 Peyton bent down towards him。 ;An Injinwhere拭─ he asked

quickly察with the same look of doubting interrogatory with which he had

received Clarence's name and parentage。 The boy for a moment regretted

having spoken。 But with his old doggedness he particularized his

statement。 Fortunately察being gifted with a keen perception察he was able

to describe the stranger accurately察and to impart with his description that

contempt for its subject which he had felt察and which to his frontier auditor

established its truthfulness。 Peyton turned abruptly away察 but presently

returned with Harry and another man。

     ;You are sure of this拭─said Peyton察half´encouragingly。

     ;Yes察sir。;

     ;As sure as you are that your father is Colonel Brant and is dead拭─said

Harry察with a light laugh。

     Tears    sprang    into  the   boy's   lowering    eyes。    ;I   don't   lie察─ he  said

doggedly。

     ;I believe you察Clarence察─said Peyton quietly。               ;But why didn't you

say it before拭─

     ;I didn't like to say it before Susy andher ─stammered the boy。

     ;Her拭─

     ;Yes察sirMrs。 Peyton察─said Clarence blushingly。

     ;Oh察─said Harry sarcastically察 how blessed polite we are ─

     ;That'll do。 Let up on him察 will you拭─ said Peyton察 roughly察 to his

subordinate。 ;The boy knows what he's about。 But察─ he continued察

addressing Clarence察 how was it the Injin didn't see you拭─

     ;I was very still on account of not waking Susy察─said Clarence察 and

;   He hesitated。

     ;And what拭─

     ;He seemed more keen watching what YOU were doing察─said the boy

boldly。

     ;That's so察─broke in the second man察who happened to be experienced察

;and as he was to wind'ard o' the boy he was off HIS scent and bearings。

He was one of their rear scouts察the rest o' them's ahead crossing our track

to cut us off。 Ye didn't see anything else拭─

     ;I saw a coyote first察─said Clarence察greatly encouraged。

     ;Hold on ─said the expert察as Harry turned away with a sneer。 ;That's

a sign察too。 Wolf don't go where wolf hez been察and coyote don't foller

Injinsthere's no pickin's How long afore did you see the coyote拭─

     ;Just after we left the wagon察─said Clarence。

     ;That's it察─said the man察thoughtfully。 ;He was driven on ahead察or

hanging on their flanks。 These Injins are betwixt us and that ar train察or

following it。;

     Peyton made a hurried gesture of warning察as if reminding the speaker

of Clarence's presencea gesture which the boy noticed and wondered at。

Then the conversation of the three men took a lower tone察 although

Clarence distinctly heard the concluding opinio
