this very day察 to Sissy察 when Rachael spoke of some one who
would be confounded by Stephen¨s return察having put him out of
the way。 Louisa had never spoken of harbouring any suspicion of
her brother in connection with the robbery察 she and Sissy had
held no confidence on the subject察save in that one interchange of
looks when the unconscious father rested his grey head on his
hand察but it was understood between them察and they both knew it。
This other fear was so awful察 that it hovered about each of them
like a ghostly shadow察 neither daring to think of its being near
herself察far less of its being near the other。
And still the forced spirit which the whelp had plucked up察
throve with him。 If Stephen Blackpool was not the thief察 let him
show himself。 Why didn¨t he拭
Another night。 Another day and night。 No Stephen Blackpool。
Where was the man察and why did he not come back拭

Chapter 6
The Starlight
he Sunday was a bright Sunday in autumn察clear and cool察
when early in the morning Sissy and Rachael met察to walk
T
in the country。
As Coketown cast ashes not only on its own head but on the
neighbourhood¨s too!after the manner of those pious persons
who do penance for their own sins by putting other people into
sackcloth!it was customary for those who now and then thirsted
for a draught of pure air察which is not absolutely the most wicked
among the vanities of life察to get a few miles away by the railroad察
and then begin their walk察or their lounge in the fields。 Sissy and
Rachael helped themselves out of the smoke by the usual means察
and were put down at a station about midway between the town
and Mr Bounderby¨s retreat。
Though the green landscape was blotted here and there with
heaps of coal察it was green elsewhere察and there were trees to see察
and there were larks singing though it was Sunday察 and there
were pleasant scents in the air察and all was overarched by a bright
blue sky。 In the distance one way察 Coketown showed as a black
mist察in another distance察hills began to rise察in a third察there was a
faint change in the light of the horizon察 where it shone upon the
far´off sea。 Under their feet察the grass was fresh察beautiful shadows
of branches flickered upon it察 and speckled it察 hedgerows were
luxuriant察 everything was at peace。 Engines at pits¨ mouths察 and
lean old horses that had worn the circle of their daily labour into

the ground察were alike quiet察wheels had ceased for a short space
to turn察and the great wheel of earth seemed to revolve without the
shocks and noises of another time。
They walked on across the fields and down the shady lanes察
sometimes getting over a fragment of a fence so rotten that it
dropped at a touch of the foot察sometimes passing near a wreck of
bricks and beams overgrown with grass察 marking the site of
deserted works。 They followed paths and tracks察 however slight。
Mounds where the grass was rank and high察and where brambles察
dock´weed察 and such´like vegetation察 were confusedly heaped
together察they always avoided察for dismal stories were told in that
country of the old pits hidden beneath such indications。
The sun was high when they sat down to rest。 They had seen no
one察 near or distant察 for a long time察 and the solitude remained
unbroken。 ^It is so still here察 Rachael察 and the way is so
untrodden察that I think we must be the first who have been here
all the summer。 ̄
As Sissy said it her eyes were attracted by another of those
rotten fragments of fence upon the ground。 She got up to look at it。
^And yet I don¨t know。 This has not been broken very long。 The
wood is quite fresh where it gave way。 Here are footsteps too。!O
Rachael 院
She ran back and caught her round the neck。 Rachael had
already started up。
^What is the matter拭院
^I don¨t know。 There is a hat lying in the grass。 ̄
They went forward together。 Rachael took it up察 shaking from
head to foot。 She broke into a passion of tears and lamentations此

^O the poor lad察the poor lad He had been made away with。 He
is lying murdered here 院
^Is there!has the hat any blood upon it拭院Sissy faltered。
They were afraid to look察but they did examine it察and found no
mark of violence察 inside or out。 It had been lying there for some
days察 for rain and dew had stained it察 and the mark of its shape
was on the grass where it had fallen。 They looked fearfully about
them察 without moving察 but could see nothing more。 ^Rachael察院
Sissy whispered察 I will go on a little by myself。 ̄
She had unclasped her hand察 and was in the act of stepping
forward察 when Rachael caught her in both arms with a scream
that resounded over the wide landscape。 Before them察 at their
very feet察 was the brink of a black ragged chasm hidden by the
thick grass。 They sprang back察 and fell upon their knees察 each
hiding her face upon the other¨s neck。
^O察my good Lord He¨s down there Down there 院At first this察
and her terrific screams察were all that could be got from Rachael察
by any tears察 by any prayers察 by any representations察 by any
means。 It was impossible to hush her察and it was deadly necessary
to hold her察or she would have flung herself down the shaft。
^Rachael察 dear Rachael察 good Rachael察 for the love of Heaven
not these dreadful cries Think of Stephen察think of Stephen察think
of Stephen 院
By an earnest repetition of this entreaty察poured out in all the
agony of such a moment察Sissy at last brought her to be silent察and
to look at her with a tearless face of stone。
^Rachael察Stephen may be living。 You wouldn¨t leave him lying
maimed at the bottom of this dreadful place察 a moment察 if you
could bring help to him 院

^No察no察no 院
^Don¨t stir from here察for his sake Let me go and listen。 ̄
She shuddered to approach the pit察but she crept towards it on
her hands and knees察and called to him as loud as she could call。
She listened察but no sound replied。 She called again and listened察
still no answering sound。 She did this察 twenty察 thirty times。 She
took a little clod of earth from the broken ground where he had
stumbled and threw it in。 She could not hear it fall。
The wide prospect察so beautiful in its stillness but a few minutes
ago察 almost carried despair to her brave heart察 as she rose and
looked all round her察seeing no help。 ^Rachael察we must lose not a
moment。 We must go in different directions察seeking aid。 You shall
go by the way we have come察 and I will go forward by the path。
Tell any one you see察and every one what has happened。 Think of
Stephen察think of Stephen 院
She knew by Rachael¨s face that she might trust her now。 And
after standing for a moment to see her running察 wringing her
hands as she ran察she turned and went upon her own search察she
stopped at the hedge to tie her shawl there as a guide to the place察
then threw her bonnet aside察and ran as she had never run before。
Run察Sissy察run察in Heaven¨s name Don¨t stop for breath。 Run察
run Quickening herself by carrying such entreaties in her
thoughts察she ran from field to field察and lane to lane察and place to
place察as she had never run before察until she came to a shed by an
engine´house察where two men lay in the shade察asleep on straw。
First to wake them察 and next to tell them察 all so wild and
breathless as she was察 what had brought her there察 were
difficulties察 but they no sooner understood her than their spirits
were on fire like hers。 One of the men was in a drunken slumber察

but on his comrade¨s shouting to him that a man had fallen down
the Old Hell Shaft察he started out to a pool of dirty water察put his
head in it察and came back sober。
With these two men she ran to another half´a´mile further察and
with that one to another察while they ran elsewhere。 Then a horse
was found察and she got another man to ride for life or death to the
railroad察and send a message to Louisa察which she wrote and gave
him。 By this time a whole village was up察 and windlasses察 poles察
candles察 lanterns察 all things necessary察 were fast collecting and
being brought into one place察to be carried to the Old Hell Shaft。
It seemed now hours and hours since she had left the lost man
lying in the grave where he had been buried alive。 She could not
bear to remain away from it any longer!it was like deserting
him!and she hurried swiftly back察accompanied by half´a´dozen
labourers察 including the drunken man whom the news had
sobered察and who was the best man of all。 When they came to the
Old Hell Shaft察they found it as lonely as she had
