d king of the island of Thera察went to Delphi to offer a hecatomb on behalf of his native city。 He was accompanied by a large number of the citizens察and among the rest by Battus察the son of Polymnestus察who belonged to the Minyan family of the Euphemidae。 On Grinus consulting the oracle about sundry matters察the Pythoness gave him for answer察 that he should found a city in Libya。; Grinus replied to this此 I察O king am too far advanced in years察and too inactive察for such a work。 Bid one of these youngsters undertake it。; As he spoke察he pointed towards Battus察and thus the matter rested for that time。 When the embassy returned to Thera察small account was taken of the oracle by the Theraeans察as they were quite ignorant where Libya was察and were not so venturesome as to send out a colony in the dark。 Seven years passed from the utterance of the oracle察and not a drop of rain fell in Thera此all the trees in the island察except one察were killed with the drought。 The Theraeans upon this sent to Delphi察and were reminded reproachfully that they had never colonised Libya。 So察as there was no help for it察they sent messengers to Crete察to inquire whether any of the Cretans察or of the strangers sojourning among them察had ever travelled as far as Libya此and these messengers of theirs察in their wanderings about the island察among other places visited Itanus察where they fell in with a man察whose name was Corobius察a dealer in purple。 In answer to their inquiries察he told them that contrary winds had once carried him to Libya察where he had gone ashore on a certain island which was named Platea。 So they hired this man's services察and took him back with them to Thera。 A few persons then sailed from Thera to reconnoitre。 Guided by Corobius to the island of Platea察they left him there with provisions for a certain number of months察and returned home with all speed to give their countrymen an account of the island。 During their absence察which was prolonged beyond the time that had been agreed upon察Corobius provisions failed him。 He was relieved察however察after a while by a Samian vessel察under the command of a man named Colaeus察which察on its way to Egypt察was forced to put in at Platea。 The crew察informed by Corobius of all the circumstances察left him sufficient food for a year。 They themselves quitted the island察and察anxious to reach Egypt察made sail in that direction察but were carried out of their course by a gale of wind from the east。 The storm not abating察they were driven past the Pillars of Hercules察and at last察by some special guiding providence察reached Tartessus。 This trading town was in those days a virgin port察unfrequented by the merchants。 The Samians察in consequence察made by the return voyage a profit greater than any Greeks before their day察excepting Sostratus察son of Laodamas察an Eginetan察with whom no one else can compare。 From the tenth part of their gains察amounting to six talents察the Samians made a brazen vessel察in shape like an Argive wine´bowl察adorned with the heads of griffins standing out in high relief。 This bowl察supported by three kneeling colossal figures in bronze察of the height of seven cubits察was placed as an offering in the temple of Juno at Samos。 The aid given to Corobius was the original cause of that close friendship which afterwards united the Cyrenaeans and Theraeans with the Samians。 The Theraeans who had left Corobius at Platea察when they reached Thera察told their countrymen that they had colonised an island on the coast of Libya。 They of Thera察upon this察resolved that men should be sent to join the colony from each of their seven districts察and that the brothers in every family should draw lots to determine who were to go。 Battus was chosen to be king and leader of the colony。 So these men departed for Platea on board of two penteconters。 Such is the account which the Theraeans give。 In the sequel of the history their accounts tally with those of the people of Cyrene察but in what they relate of Battus these two nations differ most widely。 The following is the Cyrenaic story。 There was once a king named Etearchus察who ruled over Axus察a city in Crete察and had a daughter named Phronima。 This girl's mother having died察Etearchus married a second wife察who no sooner took up her abode in his house than she proved a true step´mother to poor Phronima察always vexing her察and contriving against her every sort of mischief。 At last she taxed her with light conduct察and Etearchus察persuaded by his wife that the charge was true察bethought himself of a most barbarous mode of punishment。 There was a certain Theraean察named Themison察a merchant察living at Axus。 This man Etearchus invited to be his friend and guest察and then induced him to swear that he would do him any service he might require。 No sooner had he given the promise察than the king fetched Phronima察and察delivering her into his hands察told him to carry her away and throw her into the sea。 Hereupon Themison察full of indignation at the fraud whereby his oath had been procured察dissolved forthwith the friendship察and察taking the girl with him察sailed away from Crete。 Having reached the open main察to acquit himself of the obligation under which he was laid by his oath to Etearchus察he fastened ropes about the damsel察and察letting her down into the sea察drew her up again察and so made sail for Thera。 At Thera察Polymnestus察one of the chief citizens of the place察took Phronima to be his concubine。 The fruit of this union was a son察who stammered and had a lisp in his speech。 According to the Cyrenaeans and Theraeans the name given to the boy was Battus此in my opinion察however察he was called at the first something else察and only got the name of Battus after his arrival in Libya察assuming it either in consequence of the words addressed to him by the Delphian oracle察or on account of the office which he held。 For察in the Libyan tongue察the word ;Battus; means ;a king。; And this察I think察was the reason the Pythoness addressed him as she did此she he was to be a king in Libya察and so she used the Libyan word in speaking to him。 For after he had grown to man's estate察he made a journey to Delphi察to consult the oracle about his voice察when察upon his putting his question察the Pythoness thus replied to him此
Battus察thou camest to ask of thy voice察but Phoebus Apollo Bids thee establish a city in Libya察abounding in fleeces
which was as if she had said in her own tongue察 King察thou camest to ask of thy voice。; Then he replied察 Mighty lord察I did indeed come hither to consult thee about my voice察but thou speakest to me of quite other matters察bidding me colonise Libya´ an impossible thing what power have I拭what followers拭─Thus he spake察but he did not persuade the Pythoness to give him any other response察so察when he found that she persisted in her former answer察he left her speaking察and set out on his return to Thera。 After a while察everything began to go wrong both with Battus and with the rest of the Theraeans察whereupon these last察ignorant of the cause of their sufferings察sent to Delphi to inquire for what reason they were afflicted。 The Pythoness in reply told them ;that if they and Battus would make a settlement at Cyrene in Libya察things would go better with them。; Upon this the Theraeans sent out Battus with two penteconters察and with these he proceeded to Libya察but within a little time察not knowing what else to do察the men returned and arrived off Thera。 The Theraeans察when they saw the vessels approaching察received them with showers of missiles察would not allow them to come near the shore察and ordered the men to sail back from whence they came。 Thus compelled to return察they settled on an island near the Libyan coast察which as I have already said was called Platea。 In size it is reported to have been about equal to the city of Cyrene察as it now stands。 In this place they continued two years察but at the end of that time察as their ill luck still followed them察they left the island to the care of one of their number察and went in a body to Delphi察where they made complaint at the shrine to the effect that察notwithstanding they had colonised Libya察they prospered as poorly as before。 Hereon the Pythoness made them the following answer此
Knowest thou better than I察fair Libya abounding in fleeces拭 Better the stranger than he who has trod it拭Oh clever Theraeans
Battus and his friends察when they heard this察sailed back to Platea此it was plain the god would not hold them acquitted of the colony till they were absolutely in Libya。 So察taking with them the man whom they had left upon the island察they made a settlement on the mainland directly opposite Platea察fixing themselves at a place called Aziris察which is closed in on both sides by the most beautiful hills察and on one side is washed by a river。 Here they remained six years察at the end of which time the Libyans induced them to move察promising that they would lead them to a better situation。 So the Greeks left Aziris and were conducted by the Libyans towards the west察their journey being so arranged察by the calculation of their guides察that they passed in the night the most beautiful district of that whole country察which is the region called Irasa。 The Libyans brought them to a spring察which goes by the name of Apollo's fountain察and told them´ ;Here察Grecians察is the proper place for you to settle察for here the sky leaks。; During the lifetime of Battus察the founder of the colony察who reigned forty years察and during that of his son Arcesilaus察who reigned sixteen察the Cyrenaeans continued at the same level察neither more nor fewer in number than they were at the first。 But in the reign of the third king察Battus察surnamed the Happy察the advice of the Pythoness brought Greeks from every quarter into Libya察to join the settlement。 The Cyrenaeans had offered to all comers a share in their lands察and the oracle had spoken as follows此
He that is backward to share in the pleasant Libyan acres察 Sooner or later察I warn him察will feel regret at his folly。
Thus a great multitude were collected together to Cyrene察and the Libyans of the neighbourhood found themselves stripped of large portions of their lands。 So they察and their king Adicran察being robbed and insulted by the Cyrenaeans察sent messengers to Egypt察and put themselves under the rule of Apries察the Egyptian monarch察who察upon this察levied a vast army of Egyptians察and sent them against Cyrene。 The inhabitants of that place left their walls and marched out in force to the district of Irasa察where察near the spring called Theste察they engaged the Egyptian host察and defeated it。 The Egyptians察who had never before made trial of the prowess of the Greeks察and so thought but meanly of them察were routed with such slaughter that but a very few of them ever got back home。 For this reason察the subjects of Apries察who laid the blame of the defeat on him察revolted from his authority。 This Battus left a son called Arcesilaus察who察when he came to the throne察had dissensions with his brothers察which ended in their quitting him and departing to another region of Libya察where察after consulting among themselves察they founded the city察which is still called by the name then given to it察Barca。
