shoulder。 Montraville started察a momentary flush of resentment crossed his
cheek察 but instantly gave place to a death´like paleness察 occasioned by
painful remembrance remembrance awakened by that monitor察 whom察
though we may in vain endeavour察we can never entirely silence。
;Belcour察─said he察 you have injured me in a tender point。; ;Prithee察
Jack察─replied Belcour察 do not make a serious matter of it此how could I
refuse the girl's advances拭and thank heaven she is not your wife。;
;True察─said Montraville察 but she was innocent when I first knew her。
It was I seduced her察Belcour。 Had it not been for me察she had still been
virtuous and happy in the affection and protection of her family。;
;Pshaw察─replied Belcour察laughing察 if you had not taken advantage of
her easy nature察some other would察and where is the difference察pray拭─
;I wish I had never seen her察─cried he passionately察and starting from
his seat。 ;Oh that cursed French woman察─added he with vehemence察 had
it not been for her察I might have been happy; He paused。
;With Julia Franklin察─said Belcour。 The name察like a sudden spark of
electric fire察seemed for a moment to suspend his faculties for a moment
he was transfixed察but recovering察 he caught Belcour's hand察 and cried
'Stop stop I beseech you察 name not the lovely Julia and the wretched

Montraville in the same breath。 I am a seducer察 a mean察 ungenerous
seducer of unsuspecting innocence。 I dare not hope that purity like her's
would stoop to unite itself with black察premeditated guilt此yet by heavens I
swear察Belcour察I thought I loved the lost察abandoned Charlotte till I saw
Julia I thought I never could forsake her察but the heart is deceitful察and I
now can plainly discriminate between the impulse of a youthful passion察
and the pure flame of disinterested affection。;
At that instant Julia Franklin passed the window察leaning on her uncle's
arm。 She curtseyed as she passed察 and察 with the bewitching smile of
modest chearfulness察cried;Do you bury yourselves in the house this fine
evening察gents拭─There was something in the voice the manner the look
that was altogether irresistible。 ;Perhaps she wishes my company察─ said
Montraville mentally察as he snatched up his hat此 if I thought she loved me察
I would confess my errors察and trust to her generosity to pity and pardon
me。; He soon overtook her察 and offering her his arm察 they sauntered to
pleasant but unfrequented walks。 Belcour drew Mr。 Franklin on one side
and entered into a political discourse此they walked faster than the young
people察 and Belcour by some means contrived entirely to lose sight of
them。 It was a fine evening in the beginning of autumn察the last remains of
day´light faintly streaked the western sky察while the moon察with pale and
virgin lustre in the room of gorgeous gold and purple察 ornamented the
canopy of heaven with silver察fleecy clouds察which now and then half hid
her lovely face察 and察 by partly concealing察 heightened every beauty察 the
zephyrs whispered softly through the trees察which now began to shed their
leafy honours察a solemn silence reigned此and to a happy mind an evening
such as this would give serenity察 and calm察 unruffled pleasure察 but to
Montraville察 while it soothed the turbulence of his passions察 it brought
increase of melancholy reflections。 Julia was leaning on his arm此he took
her hand in his察 and pressing it tenderly察 sighed deeply察 but continued
silent。 Julia was embarrassed察 she wished to break a silence so
unaccountable察 but was unable察 she loved Montraville察 she saw he was
unhappy察and wished to know the cause of his uneasiness察but that innate
modesty察which nature has implanted in the female breast察prevented her
enquiring。 ;I am bad company察Miss Franklin察─said he察at last recollecting

himself察 but I have met with something to´day that has greatly distressed
me察and I cannot shake off the disagreeable impression it has made on my
mind。 ;
;I am sorry察─she replied察 that you have any cause of inquietude。 I am
sure if you were as happy as you deserve察and as all your friends wish you´
´; She hesitated。 ;And might l察─replied he with some animation察 presume
to rank the amiable Julia in that number拭─
;Certainly察─ said she察 the service you have rendered me察 the
knowledge of your worth察all combine to make me esteem you。;
;Esteem察 my lovely Julia察─ said he passionately察 is but a poor cold
word。 I would if I dared察if I thought I merited your attentionbut no察 I
must nothonour forbids。 I am beneath your notice察Julia察I am miserable
and cannot hope to be otherwise。; ;Alas ─said Julia察 I pity you。;
;Oh thou condescending charmer察─ said he察 'how that sweet word
chears my sad heart。 Indeed if you knew all察 you would pity察 but at the
same time I fear you would despise me。;
Just then they were again joined by Mr。 Franklin and Belcour。 It had
interrupted an interesting discourse。 They found it impossible to converse
on indifferent subjects察and proceeded home in silence。 At Mr。 Franklin's
door Montraville again pressed Julia's hand察and faintly articulating 'good
night察─ retired to his lodgings dispirited and wretched察 from a
consciousness that he deserved not the affection察 with which he plainly
saw he was honoured。
CHAPTER XXV。
RECEPTION OF A LETTER。
;AND where now is our poor Charlotte拭─ said Mr。 Temple one
evening察as the cold blasts of autumn whistled rudely over the heath察and
the yellow appearance of the distant wood察 spoke the near approach of
winter。 In vain the chearful fire blazed on the hearth察 in vain was he
surrounded by all the comforts of life察the parent was still alive in his heart察
and when he thought that perhaps his once darling child was ere this
exposed to all the miseries of want in a distant land察without a friend to
sooth and comfort her察without the benignant look of compassion to chear察

or the angelic voice of pity to pour the balm of consolation on her
wounded heart察 when he thought of this察 his whole soul dissolved in
tenderness察 and while he wiped the tear of anguish from the eye of his
patient察 uncomplaining Lucy察 he struggled to suppress the sympathizing
drop that started in his own。
;Oh察my poor girl察─said Mrs。 Temple察 how must she be altered察else
surely she would have relieved our agonizing minds by one line to say she
livedto say she had not quite forgot the parents who almost idolized her。;
;Gracious heaven察─ said Mr。 Temple察 starting from his seat察 lwho
would wish to be a father察to experience the agonizing pangs inflicted on a
parent's heart by the ingratitude of a child拭─Mrs。 Temple wept此her father
took her hand察 he would have said察 be comforted my child察─ but the
words died on his tongue。 The sad silence that ensued was interrupted by a
loud rap at the door。 In a moment a servant entered with a letter in his
hand。
Mrs。 Temple took it from him此 she cast her eyes upon the
superscription察 she knew the writing。 ;'Tis Charlotte察─ said she察 eagerly
breaking the seal察 she has not quite forgot us。; But before she had half
gone through the contents察 a sudden sickness seized her察 she grew cold
and giddy察 and puffing it into her husband's hand察 she cried;Read it此 I
cannot。; Mr。 Temple attempted to read it aloud察but frequently paused to
give vent to his tears。 ;My poor deluded child察─ said he察 when he had
finished。
;Oh察shall we not forgive the dear penitent拭─said Mrs。 Temple。 ;We
must察we will察my love察she is willing to return察and 'tis our duty to receive
her。;
;Father of mercy察─said Mr。 Eldridge察raising his clasped hands察 let me
but live once more to see the dear wanderer restored to her afflicted
parents察and take me from this world of sorrow whenever it seemeth best
to thy wisdom。;
;Yes察 we will receive her察─ said Mr。 Temple察 we will endeavour to
heal her wounded spirit察and speak peace and comfort to her agitated soul。
I will write to her to return immediately。'
;Oh ─said Mrs。 Temple察 I would if possible fly to her察support and

chear the dear sufferer in the approaching hour of distress察 and tell her
how nearly penitence is allied to virtue。 Cannot we go and conduct her
home察my love拭─continued she察laying her hand on his arm。 ;My father
will surely forgive our absence if we go to bring home his darling。;
;You cannot go察 my Lucy察─ said Mr。 Temple此 the delicacy of your
frame would but poorly sustain the fatigue of a long voyage察but I will go
and bring the gentle penitent to your arms此we may still see many years of
happiness。;
The struggle in the bosom of Mrs。 Temple between maternal and
conjugal tenderness was long and painful。 At length the former triumphed察
and she consented that her husband should set forward to New´York by
the first opportunity此 she wrote to her Charlotte in the tenderest察 most
consoling manner察and looked forward to the happy hour察when she should
again embrace her察with the most animated hope。
