dew察and such a one as showed the presence of God to those that
desired and believed it。
6。 Now when Moses had bestowed such honorary presents on the
workmen察as it was fit they should receive察who had wrought so
well察he offered sacrifices in the open court of the tabernacle
as God commanded him察a bull察a ram察and a kid of the goats察for
a sin´offering。 Now I shall speak of what we do in our sacred
offices in my discourse about sacrifices察and therein shall
inform men in what cases Moses bid us offer a whole
burnt´offering察and in what cases the law permits us to partake
of them as of food。 And when Moses had sprinkled Aaron's
vestments察himself察and his sons察with the blood of the beasts
that were slain察and had purified them with spring waters and
ointment察they became God's priests。 After this manner did he
consecrate them and their garments for seven days together。 The
same he did to the tabernacle察and the vessels thereto belonging
both with oil first incensed察as I said察and with the blood of
bulls and of rams察slain day by day one察according to its kind。
But on the eighth day he appointed a feast for the people察and
commanded them to offer sacrifice according to their ability。
Accordingly they contended one with another察and were ambitious
to exceed each other in the sacrifices which they brought察and so
fulfilled Moses's injunctions。 But as the sacrifices lay upon the
altar察a sudden fire was kindled from among them of its own
accord察and appeared to the sight like fire from a flash of
lightning察and consumed whatsoever was upon the altar。
7。 Hereupon an affliction befell Aaron察considered as a man and a
father察but was undergone by him with true fortitude察for he had
indeed a firmness of soul in such accidents察and he thought this
calamity came upon him according to God's will此for whereas he
had four sons察as I said before察the two elder of them察Nadab and
Abihu察did not bring those sacrifices which Moses bade them
bring察but which they used to offer formerly察and were burnt to
death。 Now when the fire rushed upon them察and began to burn
them察nobody could quench it。 Accordingly they died in this
manner。 And Moses bid their father and their brethren to take up
their bodies察to carry them out of the camp察and to bury them
magnificently。 Now the multitude lamented them察and were deeply
affected at this their death察which so unexpectedly befell them。
But Moses entreated their brethren and their father not to be
troubled for them察and to prefer the honor of God before their
grief about them察for Aaron had already put on his sacred
garments。
8。 But Moses refused all that honor which he saw the multitude
ready to bestow upon him察and attended to nothing else but the
service of God。 He went no more up to Mount Sinai察but he went
into the tabernacle察and brought back answers from God for what
he prayed for。 His habit was also that of a private man察and in
all other circumstances he behaved himself like one of the common
people察and was desirous to appear without distinguishing himself
from the multitude察but would have it known that he did nothing
else but take care of them。 He also set down in writing the form
of their government察and those laws by obedience whereto they
would lead their lives so as to please God察and so as to have no
quarrels one among another。 However察the laws he ordained were
such as God suggested to him察so I shall now discourse concerning
that form of government察and those laws。
9。 I will now treat of what I before omitted察the garment of the
high priest此for he MosesАleft no room for the evil practices
of falseАprophets察but if some of that sort should attempt to
abuse the Divine authority察he left it to God to be present at
his sacrifices when he pleased察and when he pleased to be absent。
21 And he was willing this should be known察not to the Hebrews
only察but to those foreigners also who were there。 For as to
those stones察。22 which we told you before察the high priest bare
on his shoulders察which were sardonyxes察。and I think it needless
to describe their nature察they being known to every body撮 the
one of them shined out when God was present at their sacrifices
I mean that which was in the nature of a button on his right
shoulder察bright rays darting out thence察and being seen even by
those that were most remote察which splendor yet was not before
natural to the stone。 This has appeared a wonderful thing to such
as have not so far indulged themselves in philosophy察as to
despise Divine revelation。 Yet will I mention what is still more
wonderful than this此for God declared beforehand察by those twelve
stones which the high priest bare on his breast察and which were
inserted into his breastplate察when they should be victorious in
battle察for so great a splendor shone forth from them before the
army began to march察that all the people were sensible of God's
being present for their assistance。 Whence it came to pass that
those Greeks察who had a veneration for our laws察because they
could not possibly contradict this察called that breastplate the
Oracle。 Now this breastplate察and this sardonyx察left off shining
two hundred years before I composed this book察God having been
displeased at the transgressions of his laws。 Of which things we
shall further discourse on a fitter opportunity察but I will now
go on with my proposed narration。
10。 The tabernacle being now consecrated察and a regular order
being settled for the priests察the multitude judged that God now
dwelt among them察and betook themselves to sacrifices and praises
to God as being now delivered from all expectation of evils and
as entertaining a hopeful prospect of better times hereafter。
They offered also gifts to God some as common to the whole
nation察and others as peculiar to themselves察and these tribe by
tribe察for the heads of the tribes combined together察two by two
and brought a waggon and a yoke of oxen。 These amounted to six
and they carried the tabernacle when they journeyed。 Besides
which察each head of a tribe brought a bowl察and a charger察and a
spoon察of ten darics察full of incense。 Now the charger and the
bowl were of silver察and together they weighed two hundred
shekels察but the bowl cost no more than seventy shekels察and
these were full of fine flour mingled with oil察such as they used
on the altar about the sacrifices。 They brought also a young
bullock察and a ram察with a lamb of a year old察for a whole
burnt´offering察as also a goat for the forgiveness of sins。 Every
one of the heads of the tribes brought also other sacrifices
called peace´offerings察for every day two bulls察and five rams
with lambs of a year old察and kids of the goats。 These heads of
tribes were twelve days in sacrificing察one sacrificing every
day。 Now Moses went no longer up to Mount Sinai察but went into
the tabernacle察and learned of God what they were to do察and what
laws should be made察which laws were preferable to what have been
devised by human understanding察and proved to be firmly observed
for all time to come察as being believed to be the gift of God
insomuch that the Hebrews did not transgress any of those laws
either as tempted in times of peace by luxury察or in times of war
by distress of affairs。 But I say no more here concerning them
because I have resolved to compose another work concerning our
laws。
CHAPTER 9。
The Manner Of Our Offering Sacrifices。
1。 I Will now察however察make mention of a few of our laws which
belong to purifications察and the like sacred offices察since I am
accidentally come to this matter of sacrifices。 These sacrifices
were of two sorts察of those sorts one was offered for private
persons察and the other for the people in general察and they are
done in two different ways。 In the one case察what is slain is
burnt察as a whole burnt´offering察whence that name is given to
it察but the other is a thank´offering察and is designed for
feasting those that sacrifice。 I will speak of the former。
Suppose a private man offer a burnt´offering察he must slay either
a bull察a lamb察or a kid of the goats察and the two latter of the
first year察though of bulls he is permitted to sacrifice those of
a greater age察but all burnt´offerings are to be of males。 When
they are slain察the priests sprinkle the blood round about the
altar察they then cleanse the bodies察and divide them into parts
and salt them with salt察and lay them upon the altar察while the
pieces of wood are piled one upon another察and the fire is
burning察they next cleanse the feet of the sacrifices察and the
inwards察in an accurate manner and so lay them to the rest to be
purged by the fire察while the priests receive the hides。 This is
the way of offering a burnt´offering。
2。 But those that offer thank´offerings do indeed sacrifice the
same creatures察but such as are unblemished察and above a year
old察however察they may take either males or females。 They also
sprinkle the altar with their blood察but they lay upon the altar
the kidneys and the caul察and all the fat察and the lobe of the
liver察together with the rump of the lamb察then察giving the
breast and the right shoulder to the priests察the offerers feast
upon the remainder of the flesh for two days察and what remains
they burn。
3。 The sacrifices for sins are offered in the same manner as is
the thank´offering。 But those who are unable to purchase complete
sacrifices察offer two pigeons察or turtle doves察the one of which
is made a burnt´offering to God察the other they give as food to
the priests。 But we shall treat more accurately about the
oblation of these creatures in our discourse concerning
sacrifices。 But if a person fall into sin by ignorance察he offers
an ewe lamb察or a female kid of the goats察of the same age察and
the priests sprinkle the blood at the altar察not after the former
manner察but at the corners of it。 They also bring the kidneys and
the rest of the fat察together with the lobe of the liver察to the
altar察while the priests bear away the hides and the flesh察and
spend it in the holy place察on the same day察。23 for the law
does not permit them to leave of it until the morning。 But if any
one sin察and is conscious of it himself察but hath nobody that can
prove it upon him察he offers a ram察the law enjoining him so to
do察the flesh of which the priests eat察as before察in the holy
place察on the same day。 And if the rulers offer sacrifices for
their sins察they bring the same oblations that private men do
only they so far differ察that they are to bring for sacrifices a
bull or a kid of the goats察both males。
4。 Now the law requires察both in private and public sacrifices
that the finest flour be also brought察for a lamb the measure of
one tenth deal察 for a ram two察 and for a bull three。 This
they consecrate upon the altar察when it is mingled with oil察for
oil is also brought by those that sacrifice察for a bull the half
of an hin察and for a ram the third part of the same measure察and
one quarter of it for a lamb。 This hin is an ancient Hebrew
measure察and is equivalent to two Athenian choas or congiuses。
They bring the same quantity of oil which they do of wine察and
they pour the wine about the altar察but if any one does not of
