hunting察and kill him察and when they had done so to fly to Rome
and desire to have the kingdom given them。 There were also
letters of the young man found察written to his brother察wherein
he complained that his father did not act justly in giving
Antipater a country察whose yearlyАrevenues amounted to two
hundred talents。 Upon these confessions Herod presently thought
he had somewhat to depend on察in his own opinion察as to his
suspicion about his sons察so he took up Alexander and bound him
yet did he still continue to be uneasy察and was not quite
satisfied of the truth of what he had heard察and when he came to
recollect himself察he found that they had only made juvenile
complaints and contentions察and that it was an incredible thing
that when his son should have slain him察he should openly go to
Rome to beg the kingdomВ察so he was desirous to have some surer
mark of his son's wickedness察and was very solicitous about it
that he might not appear to have condemned him to be put in
prison too rashly察so he tortured the principal of Alexander's
friends察and put not a few of them to death察without getting any
of the things out of them which he suspected。 And while Herod was
very busy about this matter察and the palace was full of terror
and trouble察one of the younger sort察when he was in the utmost
agony察confessed that Alexander had sent to his friends at Rome
and desired that he might be quickly invited thither by Caesar
and that he could discover a plot against him察that Mithridates
the king of Parthia察was joined in friendship with his father
against the Romans察and that he had a poisonous potion ready
prepared at Askelori。
5。 To these accusations Herod gave credit察and enjoyed hereby察in
his miserable case察some sort of consolation察in excuse of his
rashness察as fiattering himself with finding things in so bad a
condition察but as for the poisonous potion察which he labored to
find察he could find none。 As for Alexander察he was very desirous
to aggravate the vast misfortunes he was under察so he pretended
not to deny the accusations察but punished the rashness of his
father with a greater crime of his own察and perhaps he was
willing to make his father ashamed of his easy belief of such
calumnies此he aimed especially察if he could gain belief to his
story察to plague him and his whole kingdom察for he wrote four
letters察and sent them to him察that he did not need to torture
any more persons察for he had plotted against him察and that he had
for his partners Pheroras and the most faithful of his friends
and that Salome came in to him by night察and that she lay with
him whether he would or not察and that all men were come to be of
one mind察to make away with him as soon as they could察and so get
clear of the continual fear they were in from him。 Among these
were accused Ptolemy and Sapinnius察who were the most faithful
friends to the king。 And what more can be said察but that those
who before were the most intimate friends察were become wild
beasts to one another察as if a certain madness had fallen upon
them察while there was no room for defense or refutation察in order
to the discovery of the truth察but all were at random doomed to
destruction察so that some lamented those that were in prison
some those that were put to death察and others lamented that they
were in expectation of the same miseries察and a melancholy
solitude rendered the kingdom deformed察and quite the reverse to
that happy state it was formerly in。 Herod's own life also was
entirely disturbed察and because he could trust nobody察he was
sorely punished by the expectation of further misery察for he
often fancied in his imagination that his son had fallen upon
him察or stood by him with a sword in his hand察and thus was his
mind night and day intent upon this thing察and revolved it over
and over察no otherwise than if he were under a distraction。 And
this was the sad condition Herod was now in。
6。 But when Archelaus察king of Cappadocia察heard of the state
that Herod was in察and being in great distress about his
daughter察and the young man her husbandВ察and grieving with
Herod察as with a man that was his friend察on account of so great
a disturbance as he was under察he came to JerusalemАon purpose
to compose their differences察and when he found Herod in such a
temper察he thought it wholly unseasonable to reprove him察or to
pretend that he had done any thing rashly察for that he should
thereby naturally bring him to dispute the point with him察and by
still more and more apologizing for himself to be the more
irritated此he went察therefore察another way to work察in order to
correct the former misfortunes察and appeared angry at the young
man察and said that Herod had been so very mild a man察that he had
not acted a rash part at all。 He also said he would dissolve his
daughter's marriage with Alexander察nor could in justice spare
his own daughter察if she were conscious of any thing察and did not
inform Herod of it。 When Archelaus appeared to be of this temper
and otherwise than Herod expected or imagined察and察for the main
took Herod's part察and was angry on his account察the king abated
of his harshness察and took occasion from his appearing to have
acted justly hitherto察to come by degrees to put on the affection
of a father察and was on both sides to be pitied察for when some
persons refuted the calumnies that were laid on the young man察he
was thrown into a passion察but when Archclaus joined in the
accusation察he was dissolved into tears and sorrow after an
affectionate manner。 Accordingly察he desired that he would not
dissolve his son's marriage察and became not so angry as before
for his offenses。 So when Archclaus had brought him to a more
moderate temper察he transferred the calumnies upon his friends
and said it must be owing to them that so young a man察and one
unacquainted with malice察was corrupted察and he supposed that
there was more reason to suspect the brother than the soft。 Upon
which Herod was very much displeased at Pheroras察who indeed now
had no one that could make a reconciliation between him and his
brother。 So when he saw that Archclaus had the greatest power
with Herod察he betook himself to him in the habit of a mourner
and like one that had all the signs upon him of an undone man。
Upon this Archclaus did not overlook the intercession he made to
him察nor yet did he undertake to change the king's disposition
towards him immediately察and he said that it was better for him
to come himself to the king察and confess himself the occasion of
all察that this would make the king's anger not to be extravagant
towards him察and that then he would be present to assist him。
When he had persuaded him to this察he gained his point with both
of them察and the calumnies raised against the young man were
beyond all expectation察wiped off。 And Archclaus察as soon as he
had made the reconciliation察went then away to Cappadocia察having
proved at this juncture of time the most acceptable person to
Herod in the world察on which account he gave him the richest
presents察as tokens of his respects to him察and being on other
occasions magnanimous察he esteemed him one of his dearest
friends。 He also made an agreement with him that he would go to
Rome察because he had written to Caesar about these affairs察so
they went together as far as Antioch察and there Herod made a
reconciliation between Archclaus and Titus察the president of
Syria察who had been greatly at variance察and so returned back to
Judea。
CHAPTER 11。
Concerning The Revolt Of The Trachonites察How Sylleus Accused
Herod Before Caesar察And How Herod察When Caesar Was Angry At Him
Resolved To Send Nicolaus To Rome。
1。 When Herod had been at Rome察and was come back again察a war
arose between him and the Arabians察on the occasion following
The inhabitants of Trachonitis察after Caesar had taken the
country away from Zenodorus察and added it to Herod察had not now
power to rob察but were forced to plough the land察and to live
quietly察which was a thing they did not like察and when they did
take that pains察the ground did not produce much fruit for them。
However察at the first the king would not permit them to rob察and
so they abstained from that unjust way of living upon their
neighbors察which procured Herod a great reputation for his care。
But when he was sailing to Rome察it was at that time when he went
to accuse his son Alexander察and to commit Antipater to Caesar's
protection察the Trachonites spread a report as if he were dead
and revolted from his dominion察and betook themselves again to
their accustomed way of robbing their neighbors察at which time
the king's commanders subdued them during his absence察but about
forty of the principal robbers察being terrified by those that had
been taken察left the country察and retired into Arabia察Sylleus
entertaining them察after he had missed of marrying Salome察and
gave them a place of strength察in which they dwelt。 So they
overran not only Judea察but all Celesyria also察and carried off
the prey察while Sylleus afforded them places of protection and
quietness during their wicked practices。 But when Herod came back
from Rome察he perceived that his dominions had greatly suffered
by them察and since he could not reach the robbers themselves
because of the secure retreat they had in that country察and which
the Arabian government afforded them察and yet being very uneasy
at the injuries they had done him察he went all over Trachonitis
and slew their relations察whereupon these robbers were more angry
than before察it being a law among them to be avenged on the
murderers of their relations by all possible means察so they
continued to tear and rend every thing under Herod's dominion
with impunity。 Then did he discourse about these robberies to
Saturninus and Volumnius察and required that they should be
punished察upon which occasion they still the more confirmed
themselves in their robberies察and became more numerous察and made
very great disturbances察laying waste the countries and villages
that belonged to Herod's kingdom察and killing those men whom they
caught察till these unjust proceedings came to be like a real war
for the robbers were now become about a thousand察 at which
Herod was sore displeased察and required the robbers察as well as
the money which he had lent Obodas察by Sylleus察which was sixty
talents察and since the time of payment was now past察he desired
to have it paid him察but Sylleus察who had laid Obodas aside察and
managed all by himself察denied that the robbers were in Arabia
and put off the payment of the money察about which there was a
hearing before Saturninus and Volumnius察who were then the
presidents of Syria。 11 At last he察by their means察agreed
that within thirty days' time Herod should be paid his money察and
that each of them should deliver up the other's subjects
reciprocally。 Now察as to Herod察there was not one of the other's
subjects found in his kingdom察either as doing any injustice察or
on any other account察but it was proved that the Arabians had the
robbers amongst them。
2。 When this day appointed for payment of the money was past
without Sylleus's performing any part of his agreement察and he
was gone to Rome察He
