CORIOLANUS
SCENE I。 Rome。 A public place
Enter MENENIUS察 COMINIUS察 SICINIUS and BRUTUS察 the two
Tribunes察with others
MENENIUS。 No察I'll not go。 You hear what he hath said Which was
sometime his general察who lov'd him In a most dear particular。 He call'd
me father察But what o' that拭Go察you that banish'd him此A mile before his
tent fall down察and knee The way into his mercy。 Nay察if he coy'd To hear
Cominius speak察 I'll keep at home。 COMINIUS。 He would not seem to
know me。 MENENIUS。 Do you hear拭COMINIUS。 Yet one time he did
call me by my name。 I urg'd our old acquaintance察and the drops That we
have bled together。 'Coriolanus' He would not answer to察forbid all names察
He was a kind of nothing察titleless察Till he had forg'd himself a name i' th'
fire Of burning Rome。 MENENIUS。 Why察so You have made good work。
A pair of tribunes that have wrack'd for Rome To make coals cheap´ a
noble memory COMINIUS。 I minded him how royal 'twas to pardon
When it was less expected察he replied察It was a bare petition of a state To
one whom they had punish'd。 MENENIUS。 Very well。 Could he say less拭
COMINIUS。 I offer'd to awaken his regard For's private friends察 his
answer to me was察He could not stay to pick them in a pile Of noisome
musty chaff。 He said 'twas folly察 For one poor grain or two察 to leave
unburnt And still to nose th' offence。 MENENIUS。 For one poor grain or
two I am one of those。 His mother察wife察his child察And this brave fellow
too´ we are the grains此You are the musty chaff察and you are smelt Above
the moon。 We must be burnt for you。 SICINIUS。 Nay察pray be patient察if
you refuse your aid In this so never´needed help察yet do not Upbraid's with
our distress。 But sure察if you Would be your country's pleader察your good
tongue察 More than the instant army we can make察 Might stop our
countryman。 MENENIUS。 No察I'll not meddle。 SICINIUS。 Pray you go to
him。 MENENIUS。 What should I do拭 BRUTUS。 Only make trial what
your love can do For Rome察towards Marcius。 MENENIUS。 Well察and say
that Marcius Return me察as Cominius is return'd察Unheard´ what then拭But
as a discontented friend察 grief´shot With his unkindness拭 Say't be so拭
SICINIUS。 Yet your good will Must have that thanks from Rome after the

measure As you intended well。 MENENIUS。 I'll undertake't察I think he'll
hear me。 Yet to bite his lip And hum at good Cominius much unhearts me。
He was not taken well此he had not din'd察The veins unfill'd察our blood is
cold察and then We pout upon the morning察are unapt To give or to forgive察
but when we have stuff'd These pipes and these conveyances of our blood
With wine and feeding察we have suppler souls Than in our priest´like fasts。
Therefore I'll watch him Till he be dieted to my request察And then I'll set
upon him。 BRUTUS。 You know the very road into his kindness And
cannot lose your way。 MENENIUS。 Good faith察I'll prove him察Speed how
it will。 I shall ere long have knowledge Of my success。 Exit COMINIUS。
He'll never hear him。 SICINIUS。 Not拭COMINIUS。 I tell you he does sit
in gold察his eye Red as 'twould burn Rome察and his injury The gaoler to his
pity。 I kneel'd before him察'Twas very faintly he said 'Rise'察dismiss'd me
Thus with his speechless hand。 What he would do察He sent in writing after
me察what he would not察Bound with an oath to yield to his conditions察So
that all hope is vain察Unless his noble mother and his wife察Who察as I hear察
mean to solicit him For mercy to his country。 Therefore let's hence察And
with our fair entreaties haste them on。 Exeunt

SCENE II。 The Volscian camp before Rome
Enter MENENIUS to the WATCH on guard
FIRST WATCH。 Stay。 Whence are you拭 SECOND WATCH。 Stand察
and go back。 MENENIUS。 You guard like men察 'tis well察 but察 by your
leave察I am an officer of state and come To speak with Coriolanus。 FIRST
WATCH。 From whence拭MENENIUS。 From Rome。 FIRST WATCH。 You
may not pass察you must return。 Our general Will no more hear from thence。
SECOND WATCH。 You'll see your Rome embrac'd with fire before You'll
speak with Coriolanus。 MENENIUS。 Good my friends察If you have heard
your general talk of Rome And of his friends there察it is lots to blanks My
name hath touch'd your ears此it is Menenius。 FIRST WATCH。 Be it so察go
back。 The virtue of your name Is not here passable。 MENENIUS。 I tell
thee察fellow察Thy general is my lover。 I have been The book of his good
acts whence men have read His fame unparallel'd haply amplified察For I
have ever verified my friends´ Of whom he's chief´ with all the size that
verity Would without lapsing suffer。 Nay察sometimes察Like to a bowl upon
a subtle ground察 I have tumbled past the throw察 and in his praise Have
almost stamp'd the leasing察 therefore察 fellow察 I must have leave to pass。
FIRST WATCH。 Faith察sir察if you had told as many lies in his behalf as you
have uttered words in your own察you should not pass here察no察though it
were as virtuous to lie as to live chastely。 Therefore go back。 MENENIUS。
Prithee察fellow察remember my name is Menenius察always factionary on the
party of your general。 SECOND WATCH。 Howsoever you have been his
liar察as you say you have察I am one that察telling true under him察must say
you cannot pass。 Therefore go back。 MENENIUS。 Has he din'd察canst thou
tell拭For I would not speak with him till after dinner。 FIRST WATCH。 You
are a Roman察 are you拭 MENENIUS。 I am as thy general is。 FIRST
WATCH。 Then you should hate Rome察 as he does。 Can you察 when you
have push'd out your gates the very defender of them察 and in a violent
popular ignorance given your enemy your shield察 think to front his
revenges with the easy groans of old women察the virginal palms of your
daughters察or with the palsied intercession of such a decay'd dotant as you
seem to be拭Can you think to blow out the intended fire your city is ready

to flame in with such weak breath as this拭No察you are deceiv'd察therefore
back to Rome and prepare for your execution。 You are condemn'd察 our
general has sworn you out of reprieve and pardon。 MENENIUS。 Sirrah察if
thy captain knew I were here察 he would use me with estimation。 FIRST
WATCH。 Come察 my captain knows you not。 MENENIUS。 I mean thy
general。 FIRST WATCH。 My general cares not for you。 Back察I say察go察
lest I let forth your half pint of blood。 Back´ that's the utmost of
your having。 Back。 MENENIUS。 Nay察but fellow察fellow´
Enter CORIOLANUS with AUFIDIUS
CORIOLANUS。 What's the matter拭 MENENIUS。 Now察 you
companion察I'll say an errand for you察 you shall know now that I am in
estimation察you shall perceive that a Jack guardant cannot office me from
my son Coriolanus。 Guess but by my entertainment with him if thou
stand'st not i' th' state of hanging察 or of some death more long in
spectatorship and crueller in suffering察behold now presently察and swoon
for what's to come upon thee。 The glorious gods sit in hourly synod about
thy particular prosperity察 and love thee no worse than thy old father
Menenius does O my son my son thou art preparing fire for us察 look
thee察here's water to quench it。 I was hardly moved to come to thee察but
being assured none but myself could move thee察I have been blown out of
your gates with sighs察 and conjure thee to pardon Rome and thy
petitionary countrymen。 The good gods assuage thy wrath察 and turn the
dregs of it upon this varlet here察this察who察like a block察hath denied my
access to thee。 CORIOLANUS。 Away MENENIUS。 How away
CORIOLANUS。 Wife察mother察child察I know not。 My affairs Are servanted
to others。 Though I owe My revenge properly察 my remission lies In
Volscian breasts。 That we have been familiar察 Ingrate forgetfulness shall
poison rather Than pity note how much。 Therefore be gone。 Mine ears
against your suits are stronger than Your gates against my force。 Yet察for I
lov'd thee察Take this along察I writ it for thy sake Gives a letterАAnd would
have sent it。 Another word察Menenius察I will not hear thee speak。 This man察
Aufidius察Was my belov'd in Rome察yet thou behold'st。 AUFIDIUS。 You
keep a constant temper。 Exeunt CORIOLANUS and Aufidius FIRST

spell察 you see察 of much power You know the way home again。 FIRST
WATCH。 Do you hear how we are shent for keeping your greatness back拭
SECOND WATCH。 What cause察 do you think察 I have to swoon拭
MENENIUS。 I neither care for th' world nor your general察for such things
as you察I can scarce think there's any察y'are so slight。 He that hath a will to
die by himself fears it not from another。 Let your general do his worst。 For
you察be that you are察long察and your misery increase with your age I say
to you察 as I was said to此Away Exit FIRST WATCH。 A noble fellow察 I
warrant him。 SECOND WATCH。 The worthy fellow is our general察 he's
the rock察the oak not to be wind´shaken。 Exeunt
