SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND OF EXPERIENCE

and THE BOOK of THEL

by William Blake

 SONGS OF INNOCENCE

 INTRODUCTION

 Piping down the valleys wild

   Piping songs of pleasant glee

 On a cloud I saw a child

And he laughing said to me

;Pipe a song about a Lamb

So I piped with merry cheer。

 ;Piper察pipe that song again察

So I piped此he wept to hear。

 ;Drop thy pipe察thy happy pipe

Sing thy songs of happy cheer今

So I sang the same again

While he wept with joy to hear。

 ;Piper察sit thee down and write

   In a book察that all may read。;

So he vanish'd from my sight

   And I pluck'd a hollow reed

And I made a rural pen

And I stain'd the water clear

And I wrote my happy songs

Every child may joy to hear。

 THE SHEPHERD

How sweet is the Shepherd's sweet lot

From the morn to the evening he stays

He shall follow his sheep all the day

And his tongue shall be filled with praise。

For he hears the lambs' innocent call

And he hears the ewes' tender reply

He is watching while they are in peace

For they know when their Shepherd is nigh。

 THE ECHOING GREEN

 The sun does arise

 And make happy the skies

 The merry bells ring

 To welcome the Spring

 The skylark and thrush

 The birds of the bush

 Sing louder around

 To the bells' cheerful sound

While our sports shall be seen

 On the echoing Green。

 Old John察with white hair

 Does laugh away care

 Sitting under the oak

 Among the old folk。

 They laugh at our play

 And soon they all say

 ;Such察such were the joys

When we all girls and boys

 In our youth´time were seen

 On the echoing Green。;

 Till the little ones察weary

 No more can be merry

 The sun does descend

And our sports have an end。

Round the laps of their mothers

 Many sisters and brothers

 Like birds in their nest

 Are ready for rest

 And sport no more seen

 On the darkening green。

 THE LAMB

   Little Lamb察who make thee

Dost thou know who made thee

Gave thee life察and bid thee feed

By the stream and o'er the mead

 Gave thee clothing of delight

 Softest clothing察wolly察bright

Gave thee such a tender voice

 Making all the vales rejoice

   Little Lamb察who made thee

Dost thou know who made thee

   Little Lamb察I'll tell thee

   Little Lamb察I'll tell thee

He is called by thy name

For He calls Himself a Lamb

He is meek察and He is mild

 He became a little child。

 I a child察and thou a lamb

We are called by His name。

   Little Lamb察God bless thee

   Little Lamb察God bless thee

 THE LITTLE BLACK BOY

My mother bore me in the southern wild

And I am black察but oh my soul is white

White as an angel is the English child

But I am black察as if bereaved of light。

My mother taught me underneath a tree

And察sitting down before the heat of day

She took me on her lap and kissed me

And察pointed to the east察began to say

;Look on the rising sun此there God does live

And gives His light察and gives His heat away

And flowers and trees and beasts and men receive

Comfort in morning察joy in the noonday。

;And we are put on earth a little space

That we may learn to bear the beams of love

And these black bodies and this sunburnt face

Is but a cloud察and like a shady grove。

;For when our souls have learn'd the heat to bear

The cloud will vanish察we shall hear His voice

Saying察'Come out from the grove察my love and care

And round my golden tent like lambs rejoice'察

Thus did my mother say察and kissed me

And thus I say to little English boy。

When I from black and he from white cloud free

And round the tent of God like lambs we joy

I'll shade him from the heat till he can bear

To lean in joy upon our Father's knee

And then I'll stand and stroke his silver hair

And be like him察and he will then love me。

 THE BLOSSOM

 Merry察merry sparrow

 Under leaves so green

 A happy blossom

 Sees you察swift as arrow

 Seek your cradle narrow

 Near my bosom。

 Pretty察pretty robin

 Under leaves so green

 A happy blossom

 Hears you sobbing察sobbing

 Pretty察pretty robin

 Near my bosom。

 THE CHIMNEY´SWEEPER

When my mother died I was very young

And my father sold me while yet my tongue

Could scarcely cry ;Weep weep weep weep

So your chimneys I sweep察and in soot I sleep。

There's little Tom Dacre察who cried when his head

That curled like a lamb's back察was shaved察so I said

;Hush察Tom never mind it察for察when your head's bare

 You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair。;

And so he was quiet察and that very night

As Tom was a´sleeping察he had such a sight

 That thousands of sweepers察Dick察Joe察Ned察and Jack

Were all of them locked up in coffins of black。

And by came an angel察who had a bright key

And he opened the coffins察and let them all free

Then down a green plain察leaping察laughing察they run

And wash in a river察and shine in the sun。

Then naked and white察all their bags left behind

They rise upon clouds察and sport in the wind

And the Angel told Tom察if he'd be a good boy

He'd have God for his father察and never want joy。

And so Tom awoke察and we rose in the dark

And got with our bags and our brushes to work。

Though the morning was cold察Tom was happy and warm

So察if all do their duty察they need not fear harm。

 THE LITTLE BOY LOST

 ;Father察father察where are you going

Oh do not walk so fast

 Speak察father察speak to you little boy

   Or else I shall be lost。;

The night was dark察no father was there

The child was wet with dew

The mire was deep察and the child did weep

   And away the vapour flew。

 THE LITTLE BOY FOUND

The little boy lost in the lonely fen

   Led by the wandering light

 Began to cry察but God察ever nigh

   Appeared like his father察in white。

He kissed the child察and by the hand led

   And to his mother brought

Who in sorrow pale察through the lonely dale

   The little boy weeping sought。

 LAUGHING SONG

When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy

And the dimpling stream runs laughing by

When the air does laugh with our merry wit

And the green hill laughs with the noise of it

when the meadows laugh with lively green

And the grasshopper laughs in the merry scene

When Mary and Susan and Emily

With their sweet round mouths sing ;Ha察ha he

When the painted birds laugh in the shade

Where our table with cherries and nuts is spread

Come live察and be merry察and join with me

To sing the sweet chorus of ;Ha察ha察he

 A SONG

 Sweet dreams察form a shade

 O'er my lovely infant's head

 Sweet dreams of pleasant streams

 By happy察silent察moony beams

 Sweet Sleep察with soft down

Weave thy brows an infant crown

 Sweet Sleep察angel mild

 Hover o'er my happy child

 Sweet smiles察in the night

 Hover over my delight

 Sweet smiles察mother's smile

 All the livelong night beguile。

 Sweet moans察dovelike sighs

Chase not slumber from thine eyes

 Sweet moan察sweeter smile

 All the dovelike moans beguile。

 Sleep察sleep察happy child

 All creation slept and smiled。

 Sleep察sleep察happy sleep

While o'er thee doth mother weep。

 Sweet babe察in thy face

 Holy image I can trace

 Sweet babe察once like thee

Thy Maker lay察and wept for me

 Wept for me察for thee察for all

When He was an infant small。

 Thou His image ever see

Heavenly face that smiles on thee

 Smiles on thee察on me察on all

 Who became an infant small

Infant smiles are his own smiles

Heaven and earth to peace beguiles。

 DIVINE IMAGE

 To Mercy察Pity察Peace察and Love

   All pray in their distress

And to these virtues of delight

   Return their thankfulness。

 For Mercy察Pity察Peace察and Love

   Is God our Father dear

 And Mercy察Pity察Peace察and Love

   Is man察his child and care。

For Mercy has a human heart

   Pity察a human face

 And Love察the human form divine

   And Peace察the human dress。

 Then every man察of every clime

   That prays in his distress

Prays to the human form divine

   Love察Mercy察Pity察Peace。

And all must love the human form

   In heathen察Turk察or Jew。

 Where Mercy察Love察and Pity dwell

   There God is dwelling too。

 HOLY THURSDAY

'Twas on a Holy Thursday察their innocent faces clean

Came children walking two and two察in read察and blue察and green

Grey´headed beadles walked before察with wands as white as snow

Till into the high dome of Paul's they like Thames waters flow。

Oh what a multitude they seemed察these flowers of London town

Seated in companies they sit察with radiance all their own。

The hum of multitudes was there察but multitudes of lambs

Thousands of little boys and girls raising their innocent hands。

Now like a mighty wild they raise to heaven the voice of song

Or like harmonious thunderings the seats of heaven among

Beneath them sit the aged man察wise guardians of the poor。

Then cherish pity察lest you drive an angel from your door。
