lieved there were at least 12 or 14000 people in the street。
22nd。 To Deptford察and there viewed Sir W。 Petty's vessel察which hath an odd appearance察but not such as people do make of it。
26th。 Tom Killigrew told us of a fire last night in my Lady Castlemaine's lodging察where she bid 40l。 for one to adventure the fetching of a cabinet out察which at last was got to be done察and the fire at last quenched without doing much wrong。
27th。 At the Coffee´house察where I sat with Sir G。 Ascue A distinguished naval officer before and after the Restoration察but he never went to sea subsequently to the action in 1666察when he was taken prisoner。А and Sir William Petty察who in discourse is察methinks察one of the most rational men that ever I heard speak with a tongue察having all his notions the most distinct and clear。 To Covent Garden察to buy a maske at the French House察Madam Charett's察for my wife察in the way observing the street full of coaches at the new play察at ;The Indian Queene察─。АThe Indian Queen察─a tragedy in heroic verse察by Sir Robert Howard and Mr Dryden。А which for show察they say察exceeds Henry the Eighth。 Called to see my brother Tom察who was not at home察though they say he is in a deep consumption察and will not live two months。
30th。 This evening I tore some old papers察among others察a romance which under the title of ;Love a Cheate; I begun ten years ago at Cambridge此 and reading it over to´night察I liked it very well察and wondered a little at myself at my vein at that time when I wrote it察doubting that I cannot do so well now if I would try。
FEBRUARY 1察1663´64。 I hear how two men last night察justling for the wall about the new Exchange察did kill one another察each thrusting the other through察one of them of the King's Chapel察one Cave察and the other a retayner of my Lord Generall Middleton's。 Thence to White Hall察where察in the Duke's chamber察the King come and stayed an hour or two laughing at Sir W。 Petty察who was there about his boat察and at Gresham College in general此at which poor Petty was察I perceive察at some loss察but did argue discreetly察and bear the unreasonable follies of the King's objections and other bystanders with great discretion察and offered to take oddes against the King's best boates此 but the King would not lay察but cried him down with words only。 Gresham College he mightily laughed at察for spending time only in weighing of ayre察and doing nothing else since they sat。 Mr。 Pierce tells me how the King察coming the other day to his Theatre to see ;The Indian Queene察─。which he commends for a very fine thing撮 my Lady Castlemaine was in the next box before he come察and leaning over other ladies awhile to whisper with the King察she rose out of the box and went into the King's察and set herself on the King's right hand察between the King and the Duke of York此which察he swears察put the King himself察as well as every body else察out of countenance察and believes that she did it only to show the world that she is not out of favour yet察as was believed。 To the King's Theatre察and there saw ;The Indian Queen; acted察which indeed is a most pleasant show察and beyond my expectation察the play good察but spoiled with the ryme察which breaks the sense。 But above my expectation most察the eldest Marshall Anne Marshall察a celebrated actress察and her youngest sister Becke察so frequently mentioned in the Diary察were察I believe察the daughters of a Presbyterian Minister察but very little seems to be known about their history。 One of them is erroneously stated察in the notes to the Memoires de Grammont察and Davies' Dramatic Miscellanies察to have become Lord Oxford's mistress察for Mr。 Pepys uniformly calls the Marshalls by their proper name察and only speaks of the other lady as ;the first or old Roxalana察who had quitted the stage。;VIDE Feb。 18察1661´2察and Dec。 27察in the same year。А did do her part most excellently well as I ever heard woman in my life察but her voice is not so sweet as Ianthe's此 。Malone says察in his HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH STAGE察that Mrs。 Mary Saunderson performed Ianthe in Davenant's play of the Siege of Rhodes察at the first opening of his theatre察April 1662。 She married Betterton the following year察and lived till 1712察having filled almost all the female characters in Shakespeare with great success。 It is probable察therefore察that she was the person alluded to here察and frequently mentioned afterwards察without any more particular designation。А but察however察we come home mightily contented。 Here we met Mr。 Pickering察and he tells me that the business runs high between the Chancellor and my Lord Bristoll against the Parliament察and that my Lord Lauderdale and Cooper open high against the Chancellor察which I am sorry for。
3rd。 In Covent Garden to´night察going to fetch my wife察I stopped at the great Coffee´house there察where I never was before此 where Dryden the poet I knew at Cambridge察and all the wits of the town察and Harris the player察and Mr。 Hoole of our College。 And had I had time then察or could at other times察it will be good coming thither察for there察I perceive察is very witty and pleasant discourse。 But I could not tarry察and as it was late察they were all ready to go away。
4th。 To St。 Paul's School察and up to hear the upper form examined察and there was kept by very many of the Mercers察Clutterbucke察。Probably Alderman Clutterbuck察one of the proposed Knights of the Royal Oak for Middlesex。 There was a Sir Thomas Clutterbuck of London察CIRCITER 1670。А Barker察Harrington察and others察and with great respect used by them all察and had a noble dinner。 Here they tell me察that in Dr。 Colett's Dean of St。 Paul's察and founder of the School。А will he says that he would have a Master found for the School that hath good skill in Latin察and if it could be one that had some knowledge of the Greeke察so little was Greeke known here at that time。 Dr。 Wilkins John Wilkins察warden of Wadham College察and afterwards Dean of Rippon察consecrated Bishop of Chester 1668察Ob。 1672。 He was a learned theologian察and well versed in Mathematics and Natural察Philosophy。А and one Mr。 Smallwood察Posers。
8th。 Mr。 Pierce told me how the King still do doat upon his women察even beyond all shame此 and that the good Queene will of herself stop before she goes sometimes into her dressing´room察till she knows whether the King be there察for fear he should be察as she hath sometimes taken him察with Mrs。 Stewart察and that some of the best parts of the Queene's joynture are察contrary to faith察and against the opinion of my Lord Treasurer and his Council察bestowed or rented察I know not how察to my Lord Fitzhardinge and Mrs。 Stewart察and others of that crew察that the King do doat infinitely upon the Duke of Monmouth察apparently as one that he intends to have succeed him。 God knows what will be the end of it
9th。 Great talk of the Dutch proclaiming themselves in India察Lords of the Southern Seas察and denying traffick to all ships but their own察upon pain of confiscation此 which makes our merchants mad。 Great doubt of two ships of ours察the Greyhound and another察very rich察coming from the Streights察for fear of the Turkes。 Matters are made up between the Pope and the King of France察so that now all the doubt is察what the French will do with their armies。
10th。 I did give my wife's brother 10s。 and a coat that I had by me察a close´bodied察light´coloured cloth coat察with a gold edgeing in each seam察that was the lace of my wife's best pettycoat that she had when I married her。 He is going into Holland to seek his fortune。
15th。 To White Hall察to the Duke此 where he first put on a periwigg to´day此 but methought his hair cut short in order thereto did look very prettily of itself察before he put on his periwigg。 Great news of the arrivall of two rich ships察the Greyhound and another察which they were mightily afraid of察and great insurance given。 This afternoon Sir Thomas Chamberlin Son of William Chamberlayne察an English Judge察and created a Baronet 1642。А come to the office to me察and showed me several letters from the East Indys察showing the height that the Dutch are come to there察showing scorn to all the English察even in our only Factory there at Surat察beating several men察and hanging the English standard St。 George under the Dutch flag in scorn此saying察that whatever their masters do or say at home察they will do what they list察and be masters of all the world there察and have so proclaimed themselves Soveraine of all the South Seas察which certainly our King cannot endure察if the Parliament will give him money。 But I doubt and yet do hope they will not yet察till we are more ready for it。
17th。 Mr。 Pierce tells me of the King's giving of my Lord FitzHarding two leases which belong indeed to the Queene察worth 20000l。 to him察and how people do talk of it。
19th。 Mr。 Cutler come察and walked and talked with me a great while察and then to the 'Change together察and it being early察did tell me several excellent examples of men raised upon the 'Change by their great diligence and saving察as also his own fortune察and how credit grew upon him察that when he was not really worth 1100l。察he had credit for 100000l。察of Sir W。 Rider how he rose察and others。 By and by joyned with us Sir John Bankes察。An opulent merchant察residing in Lincoln's Inn Fields。А who told us several passages of the East India Company察and how in every case察when there was due to him and Alderman Mico 64000l。 from the Dutch for injury done to them in the East Indys察Oliver presently after the peace察they delaying to pay them the money察sent them word察that if they did not pay them by such a day察he would grant letters of mark to those merchants against them察by which they were so fearful of him察they did presently pay the money every farthing。 Took my wife察and taking a coach察went to visit察my Ladys Jemimah and Paulina Montagu察and Mrs。 Elizabeth Pickering察。Lord Sandwich's niece。А whom we found at their father's new house in Lincolne's Fields察but the house all in dirt。 They received us well enough察but I did not endeavour to carry myself over familiarly with them此 and so after a little stay察there coming in presently after us my Lady Aberguenny Probably Mary察daughter of Thomas Clifford察Esq。察of Dunton Walet察Essex察wife to George察ninth Lord Abergavenny。А and other ladies察we back again by coach。
22nd。 This evening come Mr。 Alsopp the King's brewer察with whom I spent an hour talking and bewailing the posture of things at present察the King led away by half´a´dozen men察that none of his serious servants and friends can come at him。 These are Lauderdale察Buckingham察Hamilton察FitzHarding察。to whom he hath察it seems察given 12000l。 per annum in the best part of the King's estate察and that the old Duke of Buckingham could never get of the King。 Projers is another察。Edward Progers察Esq。察the King's Valet´de´Chambre察and the confidant of his amours。 Ob。 1713察aged ninety´six。А and Sir H。 Bennett。 He loves not the Queene at all察but is rather sullen to her察and she察by all reports察incapable of children。 He is so fond of the Duke of Monmouth察that every body admires it察and he says that the Duke hath said察that he would be the death of any man that says the King was not married to his mother此 thou
