rlin。 Edward Earl of Manchester。А He wishes that my Lord Sandwich had some good occasion to be abroad this summer which is coming on察and that my Lord Hinchingbroke were well married察and Sydney Lord Sandwich's second son。Аhad some place at Court。 He pities the poor ministers that are put out察to whom察he says察the King is beholden for his coming in察and that if any such thing had been foreseen he had never come in。 Met Mr。 Creed at my bookseller's in Paul's Church´yard察who takes it ill my letter last night to Mr。 Povy察wherein I accuse him of the neglect察of the Tangier boats察in which I must confess I did not do altogether like a friend察but however it was truth察and I must owne it to be so though I fall wholly out with him for it。

25th。 Christmas´day。 Had a pleasant walk to White Hall察where I Intended to have received the communion with the family察but I come a little too late。 So I walked up into the house and spent my time looking over pictures察particularly the ships in King Henry the VIIIth's Voyage to Bullaen BoulogneАmarking the great difference between those built then and now。 By and by down to the chapel again察where Bishop Morley George Morley察Bishop of Winchester察to which See he was translated from Worcester察in 1662。 Ob。 1684。А preached upon the song of the angels察 Glory to God on high察on earth peace察and good will towards men。; Methought he made but a poor sermon察but long察and reprehending the common jollity of the Court for the true joy that shall and ought to be on these days。 Particularized concerning their excess in playes and gaming察saying that he whose office it is to keep the gamesters in order and within bounds察serves but for a second rather in a duell察meaning the groome´porter。 Upon which it was worth observing how far they are come from taking the reprehensions of a bishop seriously察that they all laugh in the chapel when he reflected on their ill actions and courses。 He did much press us to joy in these publick days of joy察and to hospitality。 But one that stood by whispered in my eare that the Bishop do not spend one groate to the poor himself。 The sermon done察a good anthem followed with vialls察and the King come down to receive the Sacrament。

26th。 To the Wardrobe。 Hither come Mr。 Battersby察and we falling into discourse of a new book of drollery in use察called Hudebras察I would needs go find it out察and met with it at the Temple此 cost me 2s。 6d。 But when I come to read it察it is so silly an abuse of the Presbyter Knight going to the warrs察that I am ashamed of it察and by and by meeting at Mr。 Townsend's at dinner察I sold it to him for 18d。

27th。 With my wife to the Duke's Theatre察and saw the second part of ;Rhodes察─。АThe Siege of Rhodes察─a tragi´comedy察in two parts察by Sir Wm。 Davenant。А done with the new Roxalana察。An actress whose name is unknown察but she had been seduced by the Earl of Oxford察and had recently quitted the stage。 For her history察 VIDE ;MEMOIRES DE GRAMMONT。;А which do it rather better in all respects for person察voice察and judgment察than the first Roxalana。

29th。 To Westminster Hall察where I staid reading at Mrs。 Mitchell's shop。 She told me what I heard not of before察the strange burning of Mr。 De Laun察a merchant's house in Lothbury察and his lady Sir Thomas Allen's daughter Sir Thomas Alleyne察Lord Mayor of London。 1660。В and her whole family察not one thing察dog nor cat察escaping察nor any of the neighbours almost hearing of it till the house was quite down and burnt。 How this should come to passe察God knows察but a most strange thing it is Hither come Jack Spicer察and talked of Exchequer matters察and how the Lord Treasurer hath now ordered all monies to be brought into the Exchequer察and hath settled the King's revenues察and given to every general expence proper assignments察to the Navy 200000l。 and odde。 He also told me of the great vast trade of the goldsmiths in supplying the King with money at dear rates。 Thence to White Hall察and got up to the top gallerys in the Banquetting House察to see the audience of the Russia Embassador察which took place after our long waiting and fear of the falling of the gallery it being so full and part of it being parted from the rest察for nobody to come up merely from the weaknesse thereof今 and very handsome it was。 After they had come in察I went down and got through the croude almost as high as the King and the Embassadors察where I saw all the presents察being rich furs察hawkes察carpets察cloths of tissue察and sea´horse teeth。 The King took two or three hawkes upon his fist察having a glove on wrought with gold察given him for the purpose。 The son of one of the Embassadors was in the richest suit for pearl and tissue察that ever I did see察or shall察I believe。 After they and all the company had kissed the King's hand察then the three Embassadors and the son察and no more察did kiss the Queene's。 One thing more I did observe察that the chief Embassador did carry up his master's letters in state before him on high察and as soon as he had delivered them察he did fall down to the ground and lay there a great while。 After all was done察the company broke up察and I spent a little while walking up and down the gallery seeing the ladies察the two Queenes察and the Duke of Monmouth with his little mistress察。Lady Anne Scot。Аwhich is very little察and like my brother´in´law's wife。

30th。 Visited Mrs。 Ferrer察and staid talking with her a good while察there being a little察proud察ugly察talking lady there察that was much crying up the Queene´Mother's Court at Somerset House above our own Queene's察there being before her no allowance of laughing and the mirth that is at the other's察and indeed it is observed that the greatest Court now´a´days is there。 Thence to White Hall察where I carried my wife to see the Queene in her presence´chamber察and the maydes of honour and the young Duke of Monmouth playing at cards。 Some of them察and but a few察were very pretty察though all well dressed in velvet gowns。

31st。 Mr。 Povy and I to White Hall察he taking me thither on purpose to carry me into the ball this night before the King。 He brought me first to the Duke's chamber察where I saw him and the Duchesse at supper察and thence into the room where the ball was to be察crammed with fine ladies察the greatest of the Court。 By and by comes the King and Queene察the Duke and Duchesse察and all the great ones此 and after seating themselves察the King takes out the Duchesse of York察and the Duke察the Duchesse of Buckingham察the Duke of Monmouth察my Lady Castlemaine察and so other lords other ladies此 and they danced the Brantle。 Branle。 Espece de danse de plusieurs personnes qui se tiennent par la main察et qui se menent tour´a´tour。DICTIONNAIRE DE L'ACADEMIE。А After that察the King led a lady a single Coranto察and then the rest of the lords察one after another察other ladies此 very noble it was察and great pleasure to see。 Then to country dances察the King leading the first察which he called for察which was察says he察 Cuckolds all awry察─the old dance of England。 Of the ladies that danced察the Duke of Monmouth's mistress察and my Lady Castlemaine察and a daughter of Sir Harry de Vicke's察were the best。 Sir Henry de Vic of Guernsey察Bart。察had been twenty years Resident for Charles II。 at Brussels察and was Chancellor of the Order of the Garter。 He died 1672察and was buried in Westminster Abbey。 His only daughter察Anne Charlotte察married John Lord Fresheville察Baron of Stavely。А The manner was察when the King dances察all the ladies in the room察and the Queene herself察stand up此 and indeed he dances rarely察and much better than the Duke of York。 Having staid here as long as I thought fit察to my infinite content察it being the greatest pleasure I could wish now to see at Court察I went home察leaving them dancing。

Thus ends this year with great mirth to me and my wife。 Our condition being thuswe are at present spending a night or two at my Lord's lodgings at White Hall。 Our home at the Navy´ office察which is and hath a pretty while been in good condition察finished and made very convenient。 By my last year's diligence in my office察blessed be God I am come to a good degree of knowledge therein察and am acknowledged so by all the world察even the Duke himself to whom I have a good accesse此 and by that察and by my being Commissioner for Tangier察he takes much notice of me察and I doubt not but察by the continuance of the same endeavours察I shall in a little time come to be a man much taken notice of in the world察specially being come to so great an esteem with Mr。 Coventry。 Publick matters stand thus此 The King is bringing察as is said察his family察and Navy察and all other his charges察to a less expence。 In the mean time察himself following his pleasures more than with good advice he would do察at least察to be seen to all the world to do so。 His dalliance with my Lady Castlemaine being publick察every day察to his great reproach察and his favouring of none at Court so much as those that are the confidants of his pleasure察as Sir H。 Bennet and Sir Charles Barkeley察which察good God put it into his heart to mend察before he makes himself too much contemned by his people for it The Duke of Monmouth is in so great splendour at Court察and so dandled by the King察that some doubt察that察if the King should have no child by the Queene which there is yet no appearance of察whether he would not be acknowledged for a lawful son察and that there will be a difference follow between the Duke of York and him察which God prevent My Lord Chancellor is threatened by people to be questioned察the next sitting of the Parliament察by some spirits that do not love to see him so great此 but certainly he is a good servant to the King。 The Queene´Mother is said to keep too great a Court now察and her being married to my Lord St。 Alban's is commonly talked of察and that they had a daughter between them in France察how true察God knows。 The Bishops are high察and go on without any diffidence in pressing uniformity察and the Presbyters seem silent in it察and either conform or lay down察though without doubt they expect a turn察and would be glad these endeavours of the other Fanatiques would take effect察there having been a plot lately found for which four have been publickly tried at the Old Bayley and hanged。 My Lord Sandwich is still in good esteem察and now keeping his Christmas in the country察and I in good esteem察I think察as any man can be察with him。 In fine察for the good condition of myself察wife察family察and estate察in the great degree that it is察and for the public state of the nation察so quiet as it is察the Lord God be praised

1662´63察JANUARY 1。 Among other discourse察Mrs。 Sarah tells us how the King sups at least four times every week with my Lady Castlemaine察and most often stays till the morning with her察and goes home through the garden all alone privately察and that so as the very centrys take notice of it and speak of it。 She tells me察that about a month ago she quickened at my Lord Gerard's Charles Lord Gerard of Brandon察Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Charles II and Captain of his Guards察created Earl of Macclesfield 1679察and died about 1693。 His wife察mentioned afterwards察was a French lady察whose name has not been preserved。А at dinner察and
