where we stopping for something for the horses察we called two or three little boys to us察and pleased ourselves with their manner of speech。 At Philips´Norton I walked to the church察and there saw a very ancient tomb of some Knight Templar察I think察and here saw the tombstone whereon there were only two heads cut察which the story goes察and creditably察were two sisters察called the Fair Maids of Foscott察that had two bodies upward and one belly察and there lie buried。 Here is also a very fine ring of six bells察and they mighty tuneable。 Having dined very well察10s。察me come before night to the Bath察where I presently stepped out with my landlord察and saw the baths with people in them。 They are not so large as I expected察but yet pleasant察and the town most of stone察and clean察though the streets generally narrow。 I home察and being weary察went to bed without supper察the rest supping。
th。 Saturday。 Up at four o'clock察being by appointment called up to the Cross Bath察where we were carried after one another察myself and wife and Betty Turner察Willet察and W。 Hewer。 And by and by察though we designed to have done before company come察much company come察very fine ladies察and the manner pretty enough察only methinks it cannot be clean to go so many bodies together in the same water。 Good conversation among them that are acquainted here察and stay together。 Strange to see how hot the water is察and in some places though this is the most temperate bath察the springs so hot as the feet not able to endure。 But strange to see察when women and men here察that live all the season in these waters察cannot but be parboiled and look like the creatures of the bath Carried away wrapped in a sheet察and in a chair home察and there one after another thus carried I staying above two hours in the water home to bed察sweating for an hour。 And by and by comes musick to play to me察extraordinary good as ever I heard at London almost any where此 5s。 Up to go to Bristoll about eleven o'clock察and paying my landlord that was our guide from Chiltren 10s。察and the serjeant of the bath 10s。察and the man that carried us in chairs 3s。 6d。察set out toward Bristoll察and come thither察the way bad察。in coach hired to spare our own horses撮 but country good察about two o'clock察where set down at the Horse´shoe察and there being trimmed by a very handsome fellow察2s。察walked with my wife and people through the city察which is in every respect another London察that one can hardly know it to stand in the country no more than that。 No carts察it standing generally on vaults察only dog´carts。 So to the Three Crowns Tavern I was directed察but when I came in察the master told me that he had newly given over the selling of wine察it seems grown rich此 and so went to the Sun察and there Deb。 going with W。 Hewer and Betty Turner to see her uncle察and leaving my wife with the mistress of the house察I to see the quay察which is a most large and noble place察and to see the new ship building by Bally察neither he nor Furzer Daniel Furzer察Surveyor to the Navy。Аbeing in town。 It will be a fine ship。 Spoke with the foreman察and did give the boys that kept the cabin 2s。 Walked back to the Sun察where I find Deb。 come back察and with her察her uncle察a sober merchant察very good company察and so like one of our sober wealthy London merchants as pleased me mightily。 Here we dined察and much good talk with him察7s。 6d。察a messenger to Sir John Knight察。Mayor of Bristol 1663察and M。P。 for that city。А who was not at home察6d。 Then walked with him and my wife and company round the quay察and to the ship察and he showed me the Custom´ house察and made me understand many things of the place察and led us through Marsh´street察where our girl was born。 But察Lord the joy that was among the old poor people of the place察to see Mrs。 Willet's daughter察it seems her mother being a brave woman and mightily beloved And so brought us a back way by surprize to his house察where a substantial good house察and well furnished察and did give us good entertainment of strawberries察a whole venison´pasty cold察and plenty of brave wine察and above all Bristol milk此 where comes in another poor woman察who hearing that Deb。 was here did come running hither察and with her eyes so full of tears and heart so full of joy that she could not speak when she come in察that it made me weep too此 I protest that I was not able to speak to her察which I would have done察to have diverted her tears。 His wife a good woman察and so sober and substantiall as I was never more pleased any where察Servant´maid察2s。 So thence took leave and he with us through the city察where in walking I find the city pay him great respect察and he the like to the meanest察which pleased me mightily。 He showed us the place where the merchants meet here察and a fine cross yet standing察like Cheapside。 And so to the Horse´shoe察where paid the reckoning察2s。 6d。 We back察and by moonshine to the Bath again about ten o'clock此 bad way察and giving the coachman 1s。 went all of us to bed。
th。 Sunday。 Up察and walked up and down the town察and saw a pretty good market´place察and many good streets察and very fair stone´houses。 And so to the great church察and there saw Bishop Montagu's tomb察and察when placed察did there see many brave people come察and among others two men brought in litters察and set down in the chancel to hear此 but I did not know one face。 Here a good organ察but a vain pragmatical fellow preached a ridiculous察affected sermon察that made me angry察and some gentlemen that sat next me察and sang well。 So home察walking round the walls of the City察which are good察and the battlements all whole。 To this church again察to see it and look over the monuments察where察among others察Dr。 Venner and Pelling察and a lady of Sir W。 Waller's察。Jane察sole daughter of Sir Richard Reynell。А he lying with his face broken。 My landlord did give me a good account of the antiquity of this town and Wells察and of two heads察on two pillars察in Wells church。
th。 Monday。 looked into the baths察and find the King and Queene's full of a mixed sort of good and bad察and the Cross only almost for the gentry。 So home with my wife察and did pay my guides察two women察5s。察one man察2s。 6d。察poor察6d。察woman to lay my foot´cloth察1s。 So to our inne察and there eat and paid reckoning察1l。 8s。 6d。察servants察3s。察poor察1s。察lent the coachman察10s。 Before I took coach察I went to make a boy dive in the King's bath察1s。 I paid also for my coach and a horse to Bristoll察1l。 1s。 6d。 Took coach察and away without any of the company of the other stage´coaches that go out of this town to´ day察and rode all day with some trouble察for fear of our being out of our way察over the Downes察。where the life of the shepherds is察in fair weather only察pretty。 In the afternoon come to Abury察where seeing great stones like those of Stonehenge standing up察I stopped and took a countryman of that town察and he carried me and showed me a place trenched in察like Old Sarum almost察with great stones pitched in it some bigger than those at Stonehenge in figure察to my great admiration此 and he told me that most people of learning coming by do come and view them察and that the King did so察and the mount cast hard by is called Selbury察from one King Seall buried there察as tradition says。 I did give this man 1s。 So took coach again察seeing one place with great high stones pitched round察which I believe was once some particular building察in some measure like that of Stonehenge。 But察about a mile off察it was prodigious to see how full the Downes are of great stones察and all along the vallies stones of considerable bigness察most of them growing certainly out of the ground察so thick as to cover the ground察which makes me think the less of the wonder of Stonehenge察for hence they might undoubtedly supply themselves with stones察as well as those at Abury。 In my way did give to the poor and menders of the highway 3s。 Before night come to Marlborough察and lay at the Hart察a good house察and a pretty fair town for a street or two察and what is most singular is察their houses on one side having their pent´ houses supported with pillars察which makes it a good walk。 All the five coaches that come this day from Bath察as well as we察were gone out of the town before six。
th。 Tuesday。 After paying the reckoning察14s。 4d。 and servants 2s。察poor 1s。察set out察and passing through a good part of this country of Wiltshire察saw a good house Littlecote。А of Alexander Popham's察。M。P。 for Bath。А and another of my Lord Craven's察。Hampstead Marshal察since destroyed by fire。А I think察in Barkeshire。 Come to Newbery察and there dined察and musick此 a song of the old courtier of Queene Elizabeth's察and how he was changed upon the coming in of the King察did please me mightily察and I did cause W。 Hewer to write it out。 Then comes the reckoning察。forced to change gold撮 8s。 7d。察servants and poor察1s。 6d。 So out察and lost our way察but come into it again察and in the evening betimes come to Reding察and I to walk about the town察which is a very great one察 I think bigger than Salisbury此 a river runs through it in seven branches察。which unite in one察in one part of the town撮 and runs into the Thames half´a´mile off此one odd sign of the Broad Face。 Then to my inn察and so to bed。
th Wednesday。 Rose察and paying the reckoning察12s。 8d。察servants and poor察2s。 6d。察musick察the worst we have had察coming to our chamber´door察but calling us by wrong names察so set out with one coach in company察and through Maydenhead察which I never saw before察to Colebrooke by noon察the way mighty good察and there dined察and fitted ourselves a little to go through London anon。 Thence pleasant way to London before night察and and all very well to great content察and saw Sir W。 Pen察who is well again。 I hear of the ill news by the great fire at Barbadoes。
th。 I did receive a hint or two from my Lord Anglesy察as if he thought much of my taking the ayre as I have done察but I care not此 but whatever the matter is察I think he hath some ill´will to me察or at least an opinion that I am more the servant of the Board than I am。 To my Lady Peterborough's察who tells me察among other things察her Lord's good words to the Duke of York lately about my Lord Sandwich察and that the Duke of York is kind to my Lord Sandwich察which I am glad to hear。
th。 Between two and three in the morning we were waked with the maids crying out察 Fire察fire察in Marke´lane ─ So I rose and looked out察and it was dreadful察and strange apprehensions in me and us all of being presently burnt。 So we all rose察and my care presently was to secure my gold and plate and papers察and could quickly have done it察but I went forth to see where it was察and the whole town was presently in the streets察and I found it in a new´built house that stood alone in Minchin´lane察over against the Cloth´workers'´hall察which burned furiously此 the house not yet quite finished察and the benefit of brick was well seen察for it burnt all inward and fell down within itself察so no fear of doing more hurt。 Yesterday I heard how my Lord Ashly is like to die察having some imposthume in his breast察that he hath been fain to be cut into the body。 To White Hall察were we attended the Duke of York in his closet upon our usual busine
