looked anxiously along the sandy road。 ;I hardly seem to have seen you
this time察─ she said breathlessly。 ;It's so short察 isn't it拭I feel you've
only just come。 Next time; The taxi came into sight。 ;I hope they
look after you properly in London。 I'm so sorry the babies have been out
all day察but Miss Neil had arranged it。 They'll hate missing you。 Poor
William察going back to London。; The taxi turned。 ;Good´bye ─ She
gave him a little hurried kiss察she was gone。
Fields察 trees察 hedges streamed by。 They shook through the empty察
blind´ looking little town察ground up the steep pull to the station。

The train was in。 William made straight for a first´class smoker察
flung back into the corner察 but this time he let the papers alone。 He
folded his arms against the dull察persistent gnawing察and began in his mind
to write a letter to Isabel。
。。。
The post was late as usual。 They sat outside the house in long chairs
under coloured parasols。 Only Bobby Kane lay on the turf at Isabel's feet。
It was dull察stifling察the day drooped like a flag。
;Do you think there will be Mondays in Heaven拭─ asked Bobby
childishly。
And Dennis murmured察 Heaven will be one long Monday。;
But Isabel couldn't help wondering what had happened to the salmon
they had for supper last night。 She had meant to have fish mayonnaise
for lunch and now。。。
Moira was asleep。 Sleeping was her latest discovery。 ;It's so
wonderful。 One simply shuts one's eyes察that's all。 It's so delicious。;
When the old ruddy postman came beating along the sandy road on his
tricycle one felt the handle´bars ought to have been oars。
Bill Hunt put down his book。 ;Letters察─ he said complacently察 and
they all waited。 But察heartless postmanO malignant world There was
only one察a fat one for Isabel。 Not even a paper。
;And mine's only from William察─said Isabel mournfully。
;From Williamalready拭─
;He's sending you back your marriage lines as a gentle reminder。;
;Does everybody have marriage lines拭 I thought they were only for
servants。;
;Pages and pages Look at her A Lady reading a Letter察─ said
Dennis。
;My darling察 precious Isabel。; Pages and pages there were。 As
Isabel read on her feeling of astonishment changed to a stifled feeling。
What on earth had induced William 。。。拭 How extraordinary it was。。。What
could have made him 。。。拭 She felt confused察 more and more excited察
even frightened。 It was just like William。 Was it拭 It was absurd察 of
course察 it must be absurd察 ridiculous。 ;Ha察 ha察 ha Oh dear ─ What

was she to do拭 Isabel flung back in her chair and laughed till she
couldn't stop laughing。
;Do察do tell us察─said the others。 ;You must tell us。;
;I'm longing to察─gurgled Isabel。 She sat up察gathered the letter察and
waved it at them。 ;Gather round察─she said。 ;Listen察it's too marvellous。
A love´letter ─
;A love´letter But how divine ─ Darling察 precious Isabel。; But
she had hardly begun before their laughter interrupted her。
;Go on察Isabel察it's perfect。;
;It's the most marvellous find。;
;Oh察do go on察Isabel ─
;God forbid察my darling察that I should be a drag on your happiness。;
;Oh oh oh ─
;Sh sh sh ─
And Isabel went on。 When she reached the end they were hysterical此
Bobby rolled on the turf and almost sobbed。
;You must let me have it just as it is察entire察for my new book察─said
Dennis firmly。 ;I shall give it a whole chapter。;
;Oh察Isabel察─moaned Moira察 that wonderful bit about holding you in
his arms ─
;I always thought those letters in divorce cases were made up。 But
they pale before this。;
;Let me hold it。 Let me read it察mine own self察─said Bobby Kane。
But察to their surprise察Isabel crushed the letter in her hand。 She was
laughing no longer。 She glanced quickly at them all察 she looked
exhausted。 ;No察not just now。 Not just now察─she stammered。
And before they could recover she had run into the house察through the
hall察up the stairs into her bedroom。 Down she sat on the side of the bed。
;How vile察 odious察 abominable察 vulgar察─ muttered Isabel。 She pressed
her eyes with her knuckles and rocked to and fro。 And again she saw
them察but not four察more like forty察laughing察sneering察jeering察stretching
out their hands while she read them William's letter。 Oh察 what a
loathsome thing to have done。 How could she have done it God
forbid察my darling察that I should be a drag on your happiness。; William

Isabel pressed her face into the pillow。 But she felt that even the grave
bedroom knew her for what she was察shallow察tinkling察vain。。。
Presently from the garden below there came voices。
;Isabel察we're all going for a bathe。 Do come ─
;Come察thou wife of William ─
;Call her once before you go察call once yet ─
Isabel sat up。 Now was the moment察now she must decide。 Would
she go with them察 or stay here and write to William。 Which察 which
should it be拭 I must make up my mind。; Oh察but how could there be
any question拭 Of course she would stay here and write。
;Titania ─piped Moira。
;Isa´bel拭─
No察it was too difficult。 ;I'llI'll go with them察and write to William
later。 Some other time。 Later。 Not now。 But I shall certainly write察─
thought Isabel hurriedly。
And察laughing察in the new way察she ran down the stairs。

8。 THE VOYAGE。
The Picton boat was due to leave at half´past eleven。 It was a
beautiful night察mild察starry察only when they got out of the cab and started
to walk down the Old Wharf that jutted out into the harbour察a faint wind
blowing off the water ruffled under Fenella's hat察and she put up her hand
to keep it on。 It was dark on the Old Wharf察very dark察the wool sheds察
the cattle trucks察 the cranes standing up so high察 the little squat railway
engine察 all seemed carved out of solid darkness。 Here and there on a
rounded wood´ pile察 that was like the stalk of a huge black mushroom察
there hung a lantern察 but it seemed afraid to unfurl its timid察 quivering
light in all that blackness察it burned softly察as if for itself。
Fenella's father pushed on with quick察 nervous strides。 Beside him
her grandma bustled along in her crackling black ulster察they went so fast
that she had now and again to give an undignified little skip to keep up
with them。 As well as her luggage strapped into a neat sausage察Fenella
carried clasped to her her grandma's umbrella察and the handle察which was
a swan's head察 kept giving her shoulder a sharp little peck as if it too
wanted her to hurry。。。Men察their caps pulled down察their collars turned up察
swung by察a few women all muffled scurried along察and one tiny boy察only
his little black arms and legs showing out of a white woolly shawl察was
jerked along angrily between his father and mother察he looked like a baby
fly that had fallen into the cream。
Then suddenly察so suddenly that Fenella and her grandma both leapt察
there sounded from behind the largest wool shed察that had a trail of smoke
hanging over it察 Mia´oo´oo´O´O ─
;First whistle察─said her father briefly察and at that moment they came in
sight of the Picton boat。 Lying beside the dark wharf察 all strung察 all
beaded with round golden lights察the Picton boat looked as if she was more
ready to sail among stars than out into the cold sea。 People pressed along
the gangway。 First went her grandma察 then her father察 then Fenella。
There was a high step down on to the deck察and an old sailor in a jersey
standing by gave her his dry察hard hand。 They were there察they stepped
out of the way of the hurrying people察 and standing under a little iron

stairway that led to the upper deck they began to say good´bye。
;There察 mother察 there's your luggage ─ said Fenella's father察 giving
grandma another strapped´up sausage。
;Thank you察Frank。;
;And you've got your cabin tickets safe拭─
;Yes察dear。;
;And your other tickets拭─
Grandma felt for them inside her glove and showed him the tips。
;That's right。;
He sounded stern察 but Fenella察 eagerly watching him察 saw that he
looked tired and sad。 ;Mia´oo´oo´O´O ─ The second whistle blared
just above their heads察and a voice like a cry shouted察 Any more for the
gangway拭─
;You'll give my love to father察─Fenella saw her father's lips say。 And
her grandma察very agitated察answered察 Of course I will察dear。 Go now。
You'll be left。 Go now察Frank。 Go now。;
;It's all right察 mother。 I've got another three minutes。; To her
surprise Fenella saw her father take off his hat。 He clasped grandma in
his arms and pressed her to him。 ;God bless you察mother ─she heard him
say。
And grandma put her hand察with the black thread glove
