them alone此for if this counsel or this work be of men察it will come to
nought此but if it be of God察ye cannot overthrow it察lest haply ye be found
even to fight against God。;
The priests saw the reasonableness of these views察and were obliged to agree
with Gamaliel。 Yet their prejudice and hatred could hardly be restrained。
Very reluctantly察after beating the disciples and charging them again at the
peril of their lives to preach no more in the name of Jesus察they released
them。 ;And they departed from the presence of the council察rejoicing that
they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name。 And daily in the
temple察and in every house察they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus
Christ。;
84
Shortly before His crucifixion Christ had bequeathed to His disciples a
legacy of peace。 ;Peace I leave with you察─He said察 My peace I give unto
you此not as the world giveth察give I unto you。 Let not your heart be
troubled察neither let it be afraid。; John 1427。 This peace is not the peace
that comes through conformity to the world。 Christ never purchased peace by
compromise with evil。 The peace that Christ left His disciples is internal
rather than external and was ever to remain with His witnesses through
strife and contention。
Christ said of Himself察 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth此I
came not to send peace察but a sword。; Matthew 1034。 The Prince of Peace察He
was yet the cause of division。 He who came to proclaim glad tidings and to
create hope and joy in the hearts of the children of men察opened a
controversy that burns deep and arouses intense passion in the human heart。
And He warns His followers察 In the world ye shall have tribulation。; ;They
shall lay their hands on you察and persecute you察delivering you up to the
synagogues察and into prisons察being brought before kings and rulers for My
name's sake。; ;Ye shall be betrayed both by parents察and brethren察and
kinsfolks察and friends察and some of you shall they cause to be put to
death。; John 1633察Luke 2112察16。
This prophecy has been fulfilled in a marked manner。 Every indignity
reproach察and cruelty that Satan could instigate human hearts to devise察has
been visited upon the followers of Jesus。 And it will be again fulfilled in
a marked manner察for the carnal heart is still at enmity with the law of
85
God察and will not be subject to its commands。 The world is no more in
harmony with the principles of Christ today than it was in the days of the
apostles。 The same hatred that prompted the cry察 Crucify Him crucify Him
the same hatred that led to the persecution of the disciples察still works in
the children of disobedience。 The same spirit which in the Dark Ages
consigned men and women to prison察to exile察and to death察which conceived
the exquisite torture of the Inquisition察which planned and executed the
Massacre of St。 Bartholomew察and which kindled the fires of Smithfield察is
still at work with malignant energy in unregenerate hearts。 The history of
truth has ever been the record of a struggle between right and wrong。 The
proclamation of the gospel has ever been carried forward in this world in
the face of opposition察peril察loss察and suffering。
What was the strength of those who in the past have suffered persecution for
Christ's sake拭It was union with God察union with the Holy Spirit察union with
Christ。 Reproach and persecution have separated many from earthly friends
but never from the love of Christ。 Never is the tempest´tried soul more
dearly loved by His Saviour than when he is suffering reproach for the
truth's sake。 ;I will love him察─Christ said察 and will manifest Myself to
him。; John 1421。 When for the truth's sake the believer stands at the bar
of earthly tribunals察Christ stands by his side。 When he is confined within
prison walls察Christ manifests Himself to him and cheers his heart with His
love。 When he suffers death for Christ's sake察the Saviour says to him察They
may kill the body察but they cannot hurt the soul。 ;Be of good cheer察I
86
have overcome the world。; ;Fear thou not察for I am with thee此be not
dismayed察for I am thy God此I will strengthen thee察yea察I will help thee
yea察I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness。; John
1633察Isaiah 4110。
;They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion察which cannot be
removed察but abideth forever。 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem察so
the Lord is round about His people from henceforth even forever。; ;He shall
redeem their soul from deceit and violence此and precious shall their blood
be in His sight。; Psalms 1251´3察7214。
;The Lord of hosts shall defend them察 。 。 the Lord their God shall save
them in that day as the flock of His people此for they shall be as the stones
of a crown察lifted up as an ensign upon His land。; Zechariah 915察16。

Chapter 9
The Seven Deacons
In those days察when the number of the disciples was multiplied察there arose
a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews察because their widows were
neglected in the daily ministration。;
The early church was made up of many classes of people察of various
nationalities。 At the time of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at
Pentecost察 there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews察devout men察out of every
nation under heaven。; Acts 25。 Among those of the Hebrew faith who were
gathered at Jerusalem were some commonly known as Grecians察between whom and
the Jews of Palestine there had long existed distrust and even antagonism。
The hearts of those who had been converted under the labors of the apostles
were softened and united by Christian love。 Despite former prejudices察all
were in harmony with one another。 Satan knew that so long as this union
continued
88
to exist察he would be powerless to check the progress of gospel truth察and
he sought to take advantage of former habits of thought察in the hope that
thereby he might be able to introduce into the church elements of disunion。
Thus it came to pass that as disciples were multiplied察the enemy succeeded
in arousing the suspicions of some who had formerly been in the habit of
looking with jealousy on their brethren in the faith and of finding fault
with their spiritual leaders察and so ;there arose a murmuring of the
Grecians against the Hebrews。; The cause of complaint was an alleged neglect
of the Greek widows in the daily distribution of assistance。 Any inequality
would have been contrary to the spirit of the gospel察yet Satan had
succeeded in arousing suspicion。 Prompt measures must now be taken to remove
all occasion for dissatisfaction察lest the enemy triumph in his effort to
bring about a division among the believers。
The disciples of Jesus had reached a crisis in their experience。 Under the
wise leadership of the apostles察who labored unitedly in the power of the
Holy Spirit察the work committed to the gospel messengers was developing
rapidly。 The church was continually enlarging察and this growth in membership
brought increasingly heavy burdens upon those in charge。 No one man察or even
one set of men察could continue to bear these burdens alone察without
imperiling the future prosperity of the church。 There was necessity for a
further distribution of the responsibilities which had been borne so
faithfully by a few during the earlier days of the church。 The apostles must
now take an important step in
89
the perfecting of gospel order in the church by laying upon others some of
the burdens thus far borne by themselves。
Summoning a meeting of the believers察the apostles were led by the Holy
Spirit to outline a plan for the better organization of all the working
forces of the church。 The time had come察the apostles stated察when the
spiritual leaders having the oversight of the church should be relieved from
the task of distributing to the poor and from similar burdens察so that they
might be free to carry forward the work of preaching the gospel。 ;Wherefore
brethren察─they said察 look ye out among you seven men of honest report
full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom察whom we may appoint over this business。
But we will give ourselves continually to prayer察and to the ministry of the
word。; This advice was followed察and by prayer and the laying on of hands
seven chosen men were solemnly set apart for their duties as deacons。
The appointment of the seven to take the oversight of special lines of work
proved a great blessing to the church。 These officers gave careful
consideration to individual needs as well as to the general financial
interests of the church察and by their prudent management and their godly
example they were an important aid to their fellow officers in binding
together the various interests of the church into a united whole。
That this step was in the order of God察is revealed in the immediate results
for good that were seen。 ;The word of God increased察and the number of the
disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly察and a great company of the
priests
90
were obedient to the faith。; This ingathering of souls was due both to the
greater freedom secured by the apostles and to the zeal and power shown by
the seven deacons。 The fact that these brethren had been ordained for the
special work of looking after the needs of the poor察did not exclude them
from teaching the faith。 On the contrary察they were fully qualified to
instruct others in the truth察and they engaged in the work with great
earnestness and success。
To the early church had been entrusted a constantly enlarging workthat of
establishing centers of light and blessing wherever there were honest souls
willing to give themselves to the service of Christ。 The proclamation of the
gospel was to be world´wide in its extent察and the messengers of the cross
could not hope to fulfill their important mission unless they should remain
united in the bonds of Christian unity察and thus reveal to the world that
they were one with Christ in God。 Had not their divine Leader prayed to the
Father察 Keep through Thine own name those whom Thou hast given Me察that
they may be one察as We are;拭And had He not declared of His disciples察 The
world hath hated them察because they are not of the world;拭Had He not
pleaded with the Father that they might be ;made perfect in one察─ that the
world may believe that Thou hast sent Me;拭John 1711察14察23察21。 Their
spiritual life and power was dependent on a close connection with the One by
whom they had been commissioned to preach the gospel。
Only as they were united with Christ could the disciples hope to have the
accompanying power of the Holy Spirit and
91
the co´operation of angels of heaven。 With the help of these divine agencies
they would present before the world a united front and would be victorious
in the conflict they were compelled to wage unceasingly against the powers
of darkness。 As they should cont
