II
Along the grass track I saw now察under the moon察just risen察a
strange processionnever seen before in Australian pastures。 It
moved on察noiselessly but quickly。 We descended the hillock察and
met it on the way察a sable litter察borne by four men察in unfamiliar
Eastern garments察two other servitors察more bravely dressed察with
yataghans and silver´hilted pistols in their belts察preceded this
somber equipage。 Perhaps Margrave divined the disdainful thought
that passed through my mind察vaguely and half´unconsciously察for he
said with a hollow察bitter laugh that had replaced the lively peal
of his once melodious mirth
;A little leisure and a little gold察and your raw colonist察too
will have the tastes of a pasha。;
I made no answer。 I had ceased to care who and what was my
tempter。 To me his whole being was resolved into one problem此had
he a secret by which death could be turned from Lilian
But now察as the litter halted察from the long察dark shadow which it
cast upon the turf察the figure of a woman emerged and stood before
us。 The outlines of her shape were lost in the loose folds of a
black mantle察and the features of her face were hidden by a black
veil察except only the dark´bright察solemn eyes。 Her stature was
lofty察her bearing majestic察whether in movement or repose。
Margrave accosted her in some language unknown to me。 She replied
in what seemed to me the same tongue。 The tones of her voice were
sweet察but inexpressibly mournful。 The words that they uttered
appeared intended to warn察or deprecate察or dissuade察but they
called to Margrave's brow a lowering frown察and drew from his lips
a burst of unmistakable anger。 The woman rejoined察in the same
melancholy music of voice。 And Margrave then察leaning his arm upon
her shoulder察as he had leaned it on mine察drew her away from the
group into a neighboring copse of the flowering eucalyptimystic
trees察never changing the hues of their pale´green leaves察ever
shifting the tints of their ash´gray察shedding bark。 For some
moments I gazed on the two human forms察dimly seen by the glinting
moonlight through the gaps in the foliage。 Then turning away my
eyes察I saw察standing close at my side察a man whom I had not
noticed before。 His footstep察as it stole to me察had fallen on the
sward without sound。 His dress察though Oriental察differed from
that of his companions察both in shape and colorfitting close to
the breast察leaving the arms bare to the elbow察and of a uniform
ghastly white察as are the cerements of the grave。 His visage was
even darker than those of the Syrians or Arabs behind him察and his
features were those of a bird of prey此the beak of the eagle察but
the eye of the vulture。 His cheeks were hollow察the arms察crossed
on his breast察were long and fleshless。 Yet in that skeleton form
there was a something which conveyed the idea of a serpent's
suppleness and strength察and as the hungry察watchful eyes met my
own startled gaze察I recoiled impulsively with that inward warning
of danger which is conveyed to man察as to inferior animals察in the
very aspect of the creatures that sting or devour。 At my movement
the man inclined his head in the submissive Eastern salutation察and
spoke in his foreign tongue察softly察humbly察fawningly察to judge by
his tone and his gesture。
I moved yet farther away from him with loathing察and now the human
thought flashed upon me此was I察in truth察exposed to no danger in
trusting myself to the mercy of the weird and remorseless master of
those hirelings from the Eastseven men in number察two at least of
them formidably armed察and docile as bloodhounds to the hunter察who
has only to show them their prey拭 But fear of man like myself is
not my weakness察where fear found its way to my heart察it was
through the doubts or the fancies in which man like myself
disappeared in the attributes察dark and unknown察which we give to a
fiend or a specter。 And察perhaps察if I could have paused to
analyze my own sensations察the very presence of this escort
creatures of flesh and bloodlessened the dread of my
incomprehensible tempter。 Rather察a hundred times察front and defy
those seven Eastern slavesI察haughty son of the Anglo´Saxon who
conquers all races because he fears no oddsthan have seen again
on the walls of my threshold the luminous察bodiless shadow
Besides此LilianLilian for one chance of saving her life察however
wild and chimerical that chance might be察I would have shrunk not a
foot from the march of an army。
Thus reassured and thus resolved察I advanced察with a smile of
disdain察to meet Margrave and his veiled companion察as they now
came from the moonlit copse。
;Well察─I said to him察with an irony that unconsciously mimicked
his own察 have you taken advice with your nurse拭 I assume that the
dark form by your side is that of Ayesha *
* Margrave's former nurse and attendant。
The woman looked at me from her sable veil察with her steadfast
solemn eyes察and said察in English察though with a foreign accent
;The nurse born in Asia is but wise through her love察the pale son
of Europe is wise through his art。 The nurse says察'Forbear' Do
you say察'Adventure'拭
;Peace ─exclaimed Margrave察stamping his foot on the ground。 ;I
take no counsel from either察it is for me to resolve察for you to
obey察and for him to aid。 Night is come察and we waste it察move
on。;
The woman made no reply察nor did I。 He took my arm and walked back
to the hut。 The barbaric escort followed。 When we reached the
door of the building察Margrave said a few words to the woman and to
the litter bearers。 They entered the hut with us。 Margrave
pointed out to the woman his coffer察to the men the fuel stowed in
the outhouse。 Both were borne away and placed within the litter。
Meanwhile I took from the table察on which it was carelessly thrown
the light hatchet that I habitually carried with me in my rambles。
;Do you think that you need that idle weapon拭─said Margrave。 ;Do
you fear the good faith of my swarthy attendants拭
;Nay察take the hatchet yourself察its use is to sever the gold from
the quartz in which we may find it imbedded察or to clear察as this
shovel察which will also be needed察from the slight soil above it
the ore that the mine in the mountain flings forth察as the sea
casts its waifs on the sands。;
;Give me your hand察fellow laborer ─said Margrave察joyfully。 ;Ah
there is no faltering terror in this pulse I was not mistaken in
the man。 What rests察but the place and the hourI shall live察I
shall live
III
Margrave now entered the litter察and the Veiled Woman drew the
black curtains round him。 I walked on察as the guide察some yards in
advance。 The air was still察heavy察and parched with the breath of
the Australasian sirocco。
We passed through the meadow lands察studded with slumbering flocks
we followed the branch of the creek察which was linked to its source
in the mountains by many a trickling waterfall察we threaded the
gloom of stunted察misshapen trees察gnarled with the stringy bark
which makes one of the signs of the strata that nourish gold察and
at length the moon察now in all her pomp of light察mid´heaven among
her subject stars察gleamed through the fissures of the cave察on
whose floor lay the relics of antediluvian races察and rested in one
flood of silvery splendor upon the hollows of the extinct volcano
with tufts of dank herbage察and wide spaces of paler sward
covering the gold belowgold察the dumb symbol of organized
Matter's great mystery察storing in itself察according as Mind察the
informer of Matter察can distinguish its uses察evil and good察bane
and blessing。
Hitherto the Veiled Woman had remained in the rear察with the white´
robed察skeletonlike image that had crept to my side unawares with
its noiseless step。 Thus察in each winding turn of the difficult
path at which the convoy following behind me came into sight察I had
seen察first察the two gayly dressed察armed men察next the black
bierlike litter察and last the Black´veiled Woman and the White´
robed Skeleton。
But now察as I halted on the tableland察backed by the mountain and
fronting the valley察the woman left her companion察passed by the
litter and the armed men察and paused by my side察at the mouth of
the moonlit cavern。
There for a moment she stood察silent察the procession below mounting
upward laboriously and slow察then she turned to me察and her veil
was withdrawn。
The face on which I gazed was wondrously beautiful察and severely
awful。 There was neither youth nor age察but beauty察mature and
majestic as that of a marble Demeter。
;Do you believe in that which you seek拭─she asked in her foreign
melodious察melancholy accents。
;I have no belief察─was my answer。 ;True science has none。 True
science questions all things察takes nothing upon credit。 It knows
but three states of the minddenial察conviction察and that vast
interval between the two which is not belief but suspense of
judgment。;
The woman let fall her veil察moved from me察and seated herself on a
crag above that cleft between mountain and creek察to which察when I
had first discovered the gold that the land nourished察the rain
from the clouds had given the rushing life of the cataract察but
which now察in the drought and the hush of the skies察was but a dead
pile of stones。
The litter now ascended the height此its bearers halted察a lean hand
tore the curtains aside察and Margrave descended leaning察this time
not on the Black´veiled Woman察but on the White´robed Skeleton。
There察as he stood察the moon shone full on his wasted form察on his
face察resolute察cheerful察and proud察despite its hollowed outlines
and sicklied hues。 He raised his head察spoke in the language
unknown to me察and the armed men and the litter bearers grouped
round him察bending low察their eyes fixed on the ground。 The Veiled
Woman rose slowly and came to his side察motioning away察with a mute
sign察the ghastly form on which he leaned察and passing round him
silently察instead察her own sustaining arm。 Margrave spoke again a
few sentences察of which I could not even guess the meaning。 When
he had concluded察the armed men and the litter bearers came nearer
to his feet察knelt down察and kissed his hand。 They then rose察and
took from the bierlike
