pearl´diving this long while many fathoms deep察and tearing up the oyster´beds so as never creature did before察hardly knowsso busy in the belly of the oyster chaos察where is no thought of ;breathing察whether she has lungs or not拭 Nations of a robust habit察and fine deep chest察can sometimes take in a deal of breath _before_ diving察and live long察in the muddy deeps察without new breath此but they too come to need it at last察and will die if they cannot get it
To the gifted soul that is born in England察what is the career察then察that will carry him察amid noble Olympic dust察up to the immortal gods拭 For his country's sake察that it may not lose the service he was born capable of doing it察for his own sake察that his life be not choked and perverted察and his light from Heaven be not changed into lightning from the Other Placeit is essential that there be such a career。 The country that can offer no career in that case察is a doomed country察nay it is already a dead country此 it has secured the ban of Heaven upon it察will not have Heaven's light察will have the Other Place's lightning察and may consider itself as appointed to expire察in frightful coughings of street musketry or otherwise察on a set day察and to be in the eye of law dead。 In no country is there not some career察inviting to it either the noble Hero察or the tough Greek of the Lower Empire此 which of the two do your careers invite拭There is no question more important。 The kind of careers you offer in countries still living察determines with perfect exactness the kind of the life that is in themwhether it is natural blessed life察or galvanic accursed ditto察and likewise what degree of strength is in the same。
Our English careers to born genius are twofold。 There is the silent or unlearned career of the Industrialisms察which are very many among us察and there is the articulate or learned career of the three professions察Medicine察Law under which we may include Politics察and the Church。 Your born genius察therefore察will first have to ask himself察Whether he can hold his tongue or cannot拭 True察all human talent察especially all deep talent察is a talent to _do_察and is intrinsically of silent nature察inaudible察like the Sphere Harmonies and Eternal Melodies察of which it is an incarnated fraction。 All real talent察I fancy察would much rather察if it listened only to Nature's monitions察express itself in rhythmic facts than in melodious words察which latter at best察where they are good for anything察are only a feeble echo and shadow or foreshadow of the former。 But talents differ much in this of power to be silent察and circumstances察of position察opportunity and such like察modify them still moreand Nature's monitions察oftenest quite drowned in foreign hearsays察are by no means the only ones listened to in decidingThe Industrialisms are all of silent nature察and some of them are heroic and eminently human察others察again察we may call unheroic察not eminently human此 _beaverish_ rather察but still honest察some are even _vulpine_察altogether inhuman and dishonest。 Your born genius must make his choice。
If a soul is born with divine intelligence察and has its lips touched with hallowed fire察in consecration for high enterprises under the sun察this young soul will find the question asked of him by England every hour and moment此 Canst thou turn thy human intelligence into the beaver sort察and make honest contrivance察and accumulation of capital by it拭 If so察do it察and avoid the vulpine kind察which I don't recommend。 Honest triumphs in engineering and machinery await thee察scrip awaits thee察commercial successes察kingship in the counting´room察on the stock´exchangethou shalt be the envy of surrounding flunkies察and collect into a heap more gold than a dray´horse can draw。;;Gold察so much gold拭─answers the ingenuous soul察with visions of the envy of surrounding flunkies dawning on him察and in very many cases decides that he will contract himself into beaverism察and with such a horse´draught of gold察emblem of a never´imagined success in beaver heroism察strike the surrounding flunkies yellow。
This is our common course察this is in some sort open to every creature察what we call the beaver career察perhaps more open in England察taking in America too察than it ever was in any country before。 And察truly察good consequences follow out of it此 who can be blind to them拭 Half of a most excellent and opulent result is realized to us in this way察baleful only when it sets up as too often now for being the whole result。 A half´result which will be blessed and heavenly so soon as the other half is hadnamely wisdom to guide the first half。 Let us honor all honest human power of contrivance in its degree。 The beaver intellect察so long as it steadfastly refuses to be vulpine察and answers the tempter pointing out short routes to it with an honest ;No察no察─is truly respectable to me察and many a highflying speaker and singer whom I have known察has appeared to me much less of a developed man than certain of my mill´owning察agricultural察commercial察mechanical察or otherwise industrial friends察who have held their peace all their days and gone on in the silent state。 If a man can keep his intellect silent察and make it even into honest beaverism察several very manful moralities察in danger of wreck on other courses察may comport well with that察and give it a genuine and partly human character察and I will tell him察in these days he may do far worse with himself and his intellect than change it into beaverism察and make honest money with it。 If indeed he could become a _heroic_ industrial察and have a life ;eminently human; But that is not easy at present。 Probably some ninety´nine out of every hundred of our gifted souls察who have to seek a career for themselves察go this beaver road。 Whereby the first half´result察national wealth namely察is plentifully realized察and only the second half察or wisdom to guide it察is dreadfully behindhand。
But now if the gifted soul be not of taciturn nature察be of vivid察impatient察rapidly productive nature察and aspire much to give itself sensible utteranceI find that察in this case察the field it has in England is narrow to an extreme察is perhaps narrower than ever offered itself察for the like object察in this world before。 Parliament察Church察Law此 let the young vivid soul turn whither he will for a career察he finds among variable conditions one condition invariable察and extremely surprising察That the proof of excellence is to be done by the tongue。 For heroism that will not speak察but only act察there is no account keptThe English Nation does not need that silent kind察then察but only the talking kind拭 Most astonishing。 Of all the organs a man has察there is none held in account察it would appear察but the tongue he uses for talking。 Premiership察woolsack察mitre察and quasi´crown此 all is attainable if you can talk with due ability。 Everywhere your proof´shot is to be a well´fired volley of talk。 Contrive to talk well察you will get to Heaven察the modern Heaven of the English。 Do not talk well察only work well察and heroically hold your peace察you have no chance whatever to get thither察with your utmost industry you may get to Threadneedle Street察and accumulate more gold than a dray´horse can draw。 Is not this a very wonderful arrangement
I have heard of races done by mortals tied in sacks察of human competitors察high aspirants察climbing heavenward on the soaped pole察seizing the soaped pig察and clutching with cleft fist察at full gallop察the fated goose tied aloft by its footwhich feats do prove agility察toughness and other useful faculties in man此 but this of dexterous talk is probably as strange a competition as any。 And the question rises察Whether certain of these other feats察or perhaps an alternation of all of them察relieved now and then by a bout of grinning through the collar察might not be profitably substituted for the solitary proof´feat of talk察now getting rather monotonous by its long continuance拭 Alas察Mr。 Bull察I do find it is all little other than a proof of toughness察which is a quality I respect察with more or less expenditure of falsity and astucity superadded察which I entirely condemn。 Toughness _plus_ astucityperhaps a simple wooden mast set up in Palace´Yard察well soaped and duly presided over察might be the honester method拭 Such a method as this by trial of talk察for filling your chief offices in Church and State察was perhaps never heard of in the solar system before。 You are quite used to it察my poor friend察and nearly dead by the consequences of it此 but in the other Planets察as in other epochs of your own Planet it would have done had you proposed it察the thing awakens incredulous amazement察world´wide Olympic laughter察which ends in tempestuous hootings察in tears and horror My friend察if you can察as heretofore this good while察find nobody to take care of your affairs but the expertest talker察it is all over with your affairs and you。 Talk never yet could guide any man's or nation's affairs察nor will it yours察except towards the _Limbus Patrum_察where all talk察except a very select kind of it察lodges at last。
Medicine察guarded too by preliminary impediments察and frightful medusa´heads of quackery察which deter many generous souls from entering察is of the _half_´articulate professions察and does not much invite the ardent kinds of ambition。 The intellect required for medicine might be wholly human察and indeed should by all rules bethe profession of the Human Healer being radically a sacred one and connected with the highest priesthoods察or rather being itself the outcome and acme of all priesthoods察and divinest conquests of intellect here below。 As will appear one day察when men take off their old monastic and ecclesiastic spectacles察and look with eyes again In essence the Physician's task is always heroic察eminently human此 but in practice most unluckily at present we find it too become in good part _beaverish_察yielding a money´result alone。 And what of it is not beaverishdoes not that too go mainly to ingenious talking察publishing of yourself察ingratiating of yourself察a partly human exercise or waste of intellect察and alas a partly vulpine dittomaking the once sacred Gr。А_'Iatros_察or Human Healer察more impossible for us than ever
Angry basilisks watch at the gates of Law and Church just now察and strike a sad damp into the nobler of the young aspirants。 Hard bonds are offered you to sign察as it were察a solemn engagement to constitute yourself an impostor察before ever entering察to declare your belief in incredibilitiesyour determination察in short察to take Chaos for Cosmos察and Satan for the Lord of things察if he come with money in his pockets察and horsehair and bombazine decently wrapt about him。 Fatal preliminaries察which deter many an ingenuous young soul察and send him back from the threshold察and I hope will deter ever more。 But if you do enter察the condition is well known此 Talk察who can talk best here拭 His shall be the mouth of gold察and the purse of gold察and with my Gr。А_mitra_ once the head´dress of unfortunate females察I am told shall his sacred temples be begirt。;
Ingenuous souls察unless forced to it察do now much shudder at the threshold of both these careers察and not a few desperately
