A CHRISTMAS TREE
I have been looking on察this evening察at a merry company of children
assembled round that pretty German toy察a Christmas Tree。 The tree was
planted in the middle of a great round table察and towered high above their
heads。 It was brilliantly lighted by a multitude of little tapers察 and
everywhere sparkled and glittered with bright objects。 There were rosy´
cheeked dolls察hiding behind the green leaves察and there were real watches
with movable hands察at least察and an endless capacity of being wound up
dangling from innumerable twigs察 there were French´polished tables察
chairs察bedsteads察wardrobes察eight´day clocks察and various other articles
of domestic furniture wonderfully made察 in tin察 at Wolverhampton察
perched among the boughs察 as if in preparation for some fairy
housekeeping察 there were jolly察 broad´faced little men察 much more
agreeable in appearance than many real menand no wonder察 for their
heads took off察 and showed them to be full of sugar´plums察 there were
fiddles and drums察 there were tambourines察 books察 work´boxes察 paint´
boxes察sweetmeat´boxes察peep´show boxes察and all kinds of boxes察there
were trinkets for the elder girls察far brighter than any grown´up gold and
jewels察there were baskets and pincushions in all devices察there were guns察
swords察 and banners察 there were witches standing in enchanted rings of
pasteboard察to tell fortunes察there were teetotums察humming´tops察needle´
cases察 pen´wipers察 smelling´bottles察 conversation´cards察 bouquet´holders察
real fruit察made artificially dazzling with gold leaf察imitation apples察pears察
and walnuts察crammed with surprises察in short察as a pretty child察before me察
delightedly whispered to another pretty child察 her bosom friend察 There
was everything察 and more。; This motley collection of odd objects察
clustering on the tree like magic fruit察and flashing back the bright looks
directed towards it from every sidesome of the diamond´eyes admiring it
were hardly on a level with the table察and a few were languishing in timid
wonder on the bosoms of pretty mothers察aunts察and nursesmade a lively
realisation of the fancies of childhood察 and set me thinking how all the
trees that grow and all the things that come into existence on the earth察

have their wild adornments at that well´remembered time。
Being now at home again察 and alone察 the only person in the house
awake察my thoughts are drawn back察by a fascination which I do not care
to resist察 to my own childhood。 I begin to consider察 what do we all
remember best upon the branches of the Christmas Tree of our own young
Christmas days察by which we climbed to real life。
Straight察 in the middle of the room察 cramped in the freedom of its
growth by no encircling walls or soon´reached ceiling察 a shadowy tree
arises察and察looking up into the dreamy brightness of its top for I observe
in this tree the singular property that it appears to grow downward towards
the earthI look into my youngest Christmas recollections
All toys at first察 I find。 Up yonder察 among the green holly and red
berries察 is the Tumbler with his hands in his pockets察 who wouldn't lie
down察but whenever he was put upon the floor察persisted in rolling his fat
body about察until he rolled himself still察and brought those lobster eyes of
his to bear upon mewhen I affected to laugh very much察but in my heart
of hearts was extremely doubtful of him。 Close beside him is that
infernal snuff´box察out of which there sprang a demoniacal Counsellor in a
black gown察with an obnoxious head of hair察and a red cloth mouth察wide
open察who was not to be endured on any terms察but could not be put away
either察 for he used suddenly察 in a highly magnified state察 to fly out of
Mammoth Snuff´boxes in dreams察when least expected。 Nor is the frog
with cobbler's wax on his tail察far off察for there was no knowing where he
wouldn't jump察and when he flew over the candle察and came upon one's
hand with that spotted backred on a green groundhe was horrible。
The cardboard lady in a blue´silk skirt察 who was stood up against the
candlestick to dance察and whom I see on the same branch察was milder察and
was beautiful察but I can't say as much for the larger cardboard man察who
used to be hung against the wall and pulled by a string察there was a sinister
expression in that nose of his察 and when he got his legs round his neck
which he very often did察he was ghastly察and not a creature to be alone
with。
When did that dreadful Mask first look at me拭 Who put it on察and
why was I so frightened that the sight of it is an era in my life拭It is not a

hideous visage in itself察 it is even meant to be droll察 why then were its
stolid features so intolerable拭 Surely not because it hid the wearer's face。
An apron would have done as much察and though I should have preferred
even the apron away察it would not have been absolutely insupportable察like
the mask。 Was it the immovability of the mask拭 The doll's face was
immovable察 but I was not afraid of HER。 Perhaps that fixed and set
change coming over a real face察 infused into my quickened heart some
remote suggestion and dread of the universal change that is to come on
every face察 and make it still拭 Nothing reconciled me to it。 No
drummers察from whom proceeded a melancholy chirping on the turning of
a handle察no regiment of soldiers察with a mute band察taken out of a box察
and fitted察one by one察upon a stiff and lazy little set of lazy´tongs察no old
woman察made of wires and a brown´paper composition察cutting up a pie
for two small children察 could give me a permanent comfort察 for a long
time。 Nor was it any satisfaction to be shown the Mask察and see that it
was made of paper察 or to have it locked up and be assured that no one
wore it。 The mere recollection of that fixed face察the mere knowledge of
its existence anywhere察 was sufficient to awake me in the night all
perspiration and horror察with察 O I know it's coming O the mask ─
I never wondered what the dear old donkey with the panniersthere he
is was made of察then His hide was real to the touch察I recollect。 And
the great black horse with the round red spots all over himthe horse that I
could even get uponI never wondered what had brought him to that
strange condition察or thought that such a horse was not commonly seen at
Newmarket。 The four horses of no colour察next to him察that went into the
waggon of cheeses察and could be taken out and stabled under the piano察
appear to have bits of fur´tippet for their tails察 and other bits for their
manes察and to stand on pegs instead of legs察but it was not so when they
were brought home for a Christmas present。 They were all right察then察
neither was their harness unceremoniously nailed into their chests察 as
appears to be the case now。 The tinkling works of the music´ cart察I DID
find out察to be made of quill tooth´picks and wire察and I always thought
that little tumbler in his shirt sleeves察perpetually swarming up one side of
a wooden frame察and coming down察head foremost察on the other察rather a

weak´minded personthough good´natured察 but the Jacob's Ladder察 next
him察made of little squares of red wood察that went flapping and clattering
over one another察 each developing a different picture察 and the whole
enlivened by small bells察was a mighty marvel and a great delight。
Ah The Doll's houseof which I was not proprietor察 but where I
visited。 I don't admire the Houses of Parliament half so much as that
stone´fronted mansion with real glass windows察and door´steps察and a real
balconygreener than I ever see now察except at watering places察and even
they afford but a poor imitation。 And though it DID open all at once察the
entire house´front which was a blow察I admit察as cancelling the fiction of
a staircase察it was but to shut it up again察and I could believe。 Even open察
there were three distinct rooms in it此 a sitting´room and bed´room察
elegantly furnished察and best of all察a kitchen察with uncommonly soft fire´
irons察a plentiful assortment of diminutive utensilsoh察the warming´pan
´and a tin man´cook in profile察 who was always going to fry two fish。
What Barmecide justice have I done to the noble feasts wherein the set of
wooden platters figured察each with its own peculiar delicacy察as a ham or
turkey察glued tight on to it察and garnished with something green察which I
recollect as moss Could all the Temperance Societies of these later days察
united察give me such a tea´drinking as I have had through the means of
yonder little set of blue crockery察which really would hold liquid it ran out
of the small wooden cask察I recollect察and tasted of matches察and which
made tea察nectar。 And if the two legs of the ineffectual little sugar´tongs
did tumble over one another察and want purpose察like Punch's hands察what
does it matter拭 And if I did once shriek
