She could hear the river on the other side察and looked for some
place where she could climb and see exactly where she was。 An old
ash´tree tempted her。 Scrambling up into its fork察she could just
see over。 There was the little river within twenty yards察its
clear dark water running between thick foliage。 On its bank lay a
huge stone balanced on another stone still more huge。 And with his
back to this stone stood the boy察his rod leaning beside him。 And
there察on the ground察her arms resting on her knees察her chin on
her hands察that girl sat looking up。 How eager his eyes nowhow
different from the brooding eyes of yesterday

;So察you see察that was all。 You might forgive me察Sylvia

And to Anna it seemed verily as if those two young faces formed
suddenly but onethe face of youth。

If she had stayed there looking for all time察she could not have
had graven on her heart a vision more indelible。 Vision of Spring
of all that was gone from her for ever She shrank back out of the
fork of the old ash´tree察and察like a stricken beast察went
hurrying察stumbling away察amongst the stones and bracken。 She ran
thus perhaps a quarter of a mile察then threw up her arms察fell down
amongst the fern察and lay there on her face。 At first her heart
hurt her so that she felt nothing but that physical pain。 If she
could have died But she knew it was nothing but breathlessness。
It left her察and that which took its place she tried to drive away
by pressing her breast against the ground察by clutching the stalks
of the brackenan ache察an emptiness too dreadful Youth to
youth He was gone from herand she was alone again She did not
cry。 What good in crying拭 But gusts of shame kept sweeping
through her察shame and rage。 So this was all she was worth The
sun struck hot on her back in that lair of tangled fern察where she
had fallen察she felt faint and sick。 She had not known till now
quite what this passion for the boy had meant to her察how much of
her very belief in herself was bound up with it察how much clinging
to her own youth。 What bitterness One soft slip of a white girl
one YOUNG thingand she had become as nothing But was that
true拭 Could she not even now wrench him back to her with the
passion that this child knew nothing of Surely Oh察surely Let
him but once taste the rapture she could give him And at that
thought she ceased clutching at the bracken stalks察lying as still
as the very stones around her。 Could she not拭 Might she not察even
now拭 And all feeling察except just a sort of quivering察deserted
heras if she had fallen into a trance。 Why spare this girl拭 Why
falter拭 She was first He had been hers out there。 And she still
had the power to draw him。 At dinner the first evening she had
dragged his gaze to her察away from that girlaway from youth察as a
magnet draws steel。 She could still bind him with chains that for
a little while at all events he would not want to break Bind him
Hateful word Take him察hankering after what she could not give
himyouth察white innocence察Spring拭 It would be infamous
infamous She sprang up from the fern察and ran along the hillside
not looking where she went察stumbling among the tangled growth察in
and out of the boulders察till she once more sank breathless on to a
stone。 It was bare of trees just here察and she could see察across
the river valley察the high larch´crowned tor on the far side。 The
sky was clearthe sun bright。 A hawk was wheeling over that hill
far up察very near the blue Infamous She could not do that
Could not drug him察drag him to her by his senses察by all that was
least high in him察when she wished for him all the finest things
that life could give察as if she had been his mother。 She could
not。 It would be wicked In that moment of intense spiritual
agony察those two down there in the sun察by the grey stone and the
dark water察seemed guarded from her察protected。 The girl's white
flower´face trembling up察the boy's gaze leaping down Strange
that a heart which felt that察could hate at the same moment that
flower´face察and burn to kill with kisses that eagerness in the
boy's eyes。 The storm in her slowly passed。 And she prayed just
to feel nothing。 It was natural that she should lose her hour
Natural that her thirst should go unslaked察and her passion never
bloom察natural that youth should go to youth察this boy to his own
kind察by the law oflove。 The breeze blowing down the valley
fanned her cheeks察and brought her a faint sensation of relief。
Nobility Was it just a word拭 Or did those that gave up happiness
feel noble

She wandered for a long time in the park。 Not till late afternoon
did she again pass out by the gate察through which she had entered
full of hope。 She met no one before she reached her room察and
there察to be safe察took refuge in her bed。 She dreaded only lest
the feeling of utter weariness should leave her。 She wanted no
vigour of mind or body till she was away from here。 She meant
neither to eat nor drink察only to sleep察if she could。 To´morrow
if there were any early train察she could be gone before she need
see anyone察her husband must arrange。 As to what he would think
and she could saytime enough to decide that。 And what did it
matter拭 The one vital thing now was not to see the boy察for she
could not again go through hours of struggle like those。 She rang
the bell察and sent the startled maid with a message to her husband。
And while she waited for him to come察her pride began revolting。
She must not let him see。 That would be horrible。 And slipping
out of bed she got a handkerchief and the eau´de´Cologne flask察and
bandaged her forehead。 He came almost instantly察entering in his
quick察noiseless way察and stood looking at her。 He did not ask
what was the matter察but simply waited。 And never before had she
realized so completely how he began察as it were察where she left
off察began on a plane from which instinct and feeling were as
carefully ruled out as though they had been blasphemous。 She
summoned all her courage察and said此 I went into the park察the sun
must have been too hot。 I should like to go home to´morrow察if you
don't mind。  I can't bear not feeling well in other people's
houses。;

She was conscious of a smile flickering over his face察then it grew
grave。

;Ah ─he said察 yes。 The sun察a touch of that will last some days。
Will you be fit to travel察though拭

She had a sudden conviction that he knew all about it察but that
since to know all about it was to feel himself ridiculoushe had
the power of making himself believe that he knew nothing。 Was this
fine of him察or was it hateful

She closed her eyes and said

;My head is bad察but I SHALL be able。 Only I don't want a fuss
made。 Could we go by a train before they are down拭

She heard him say

;Yes。  That will have its advantages。;

There was not the faintest sound now察but of course he was still
there。 In that dumb察motionless presence was all her future。 Yes
that would be her futurea thing without feeling察and without
motion。 A fearful curiosity came on her to look at it。 She opened
her gaze。 He was still standing just as he had been察his eyes
fixed on her。 But one hand察on the edge of his coat pocketout of
the picture察as it werewas nervously closing and unclosing。 And
suddenly she felt pity。 Not for her futurewhich must be like
that察but for him。 How dreadful to have grown so that all emotion
was exiledhow dreadful And she said gently

;I am sorry察Harold。;

As if he had heard something strange and startling察his eyes
dilated in a curious way察he buried that nervous hand in his
pocket察turned察and went out。

When young Mark came on Sylvia by the logan´stone察it was less
surprising to him than if he had not known she was therehaving
watched her go。 She was sitting察all humped together察brooding
over the water察her sunbonnet thrown back察and that hair察in which
his star had caught察shining faint´gold under the sun。 He came on
her softly through the grass察and察when he was a little way off
thought it best to halt。 If he startled her she might run away
and he would not have the heart to follow。 How still she was察lost
in her brooding He wished he could see her face。 He spoke at
last察gently

;Sylvia 。 。 Would you mind拭

And察seeing that she did not move察he went up to her。 Surely she
could not still be angry with him

;Thanks most awfully for that book you gave meit looks splendid

She made no answer。 And leaning his rod against the stone察he
sighed。 That silence of hers seemed to him unjust察what was it she
wanted him to say or do拭 Life was not worth living察if it was to
be all bottled up like this。

;I never meant to hurt you。 I hate hurting people。 It's only that
my beasts are so badI can't bear people to see themespecially
youI want to please youI do really。 So察you see察that was all。
You MIGHT forgive me察Sylvia

Something over the wall察a rustling察a scattering in the fern
deer察no doubt And again he said eagerly察softly

;You might be nice to me察Sylvia察you really might。;

Very quickly察turning her head away察she said

;It isn't that any more。  It'sit's something else。;

;What else拭

;Nothingonly察that I don't countnow;

He knelt down beside her。 What did she mean拭 But he knew well
enough。

;Of course察you count Most awfully Oh察don't be unhappy I
hate people being unhappy。 Don't be unhappy察Sylvia ─ And he
began gently to stroke her arm。 It was all strange and troubled
within him察one thing only plainhe must not admit anything As
if reading that thought察her blue eyes seemed suddenly to search
right into him。 Then she pulled some blades of grass察and began
plaiting them。

;SHE counts。;

Ah He was not going to say此She doesn't It would be caddish to
say that。 Even if she didn't countDid she stillit would be
mean and low。 And in his eyes just then there was the look that
had made his tutor compare him to a lion cub in trouble。

Sylvia was touching his arm。

;Mark

;Yes。;

;Don't

He got up and took his rod。 What was the use拭 He could not stay
there with her察since he could notmust not speak。

;Are you going拭

;Yes。;

;Are you angry拭 PLEASE don't be angry with me。;

He felt a choke in his throat察bent down to her hand察and kissed
it察then shouldered his rod察and marched away。 Looking back once
he saw her still sitting there察gazing after him察forlorn察by that
great stone。 It seemed to him察then察there was nowhere he could
go察nowhere except among the birds and beasts and trees察who did
not mind even if you were all mixed up and horrible inside。 He lay
down in the grass on the bank。 He could see the tiny trout moving
round and round the stones察swallows came all about him察flying
very low察a hornet察too察bore him company for a little。 But he
could take interest in nothing察it was as if his spirit were in
prison。 It would have been nice察indeed察to be that water察never
staying察passing察passing察or wind察touching everything察never
caught。 To be able to do nothing without hurting someonethat was
what was so ghastly。 If only on
