her uncle was looking at her so fixedly察 but there is no knowing察

for just then Adam was saying察with quiet surprise察 Why察I hoped

Dinah was settled among us for life。 I thought she¨d given up the

notion o¨ going back to her old country。 ̄

^Thought yes察院said Mrs。 Poyser察 and so would anybody else

ha¨ thought察as had got their right end up¨ards。 But I suppose you

must be a Methodist to know what a Methodist ¨ull do。 It¨s ill

guessing what the bats are flying after。 ̄

^Why察what have we done to you。 Dinah察as you must go away

from us拭院said Mr。 Poyser察still pausing over his tea´cup。 ^It¨s like

breaking your word察welly察for your aunt never had no thought but

you¨d make this your home。 ̄

    ^Nay察Uncle察院said Dinah察trying to be quite calm。 ^When I first

came察 I said it was only for a time察 as long as I could be of any

comfort to my aunt。 ̄

^Well察an¨ who said you¨d ever left off being a comfort to me拭院

said Mrs。 Poyser。 ^If you didna mean to stay wi¨ me察you¨d better

never ha¨ come。 Them as ha¨ never had a cushion don¨t miss it。 ̄

^Nay察 nay察院 said Mr。 Poyser察 who objected to exaggerated

views。 ^Thee mustna say so察we should ha¨ been ill off wi¨out her察

Lady day was a twelvemont¨。 We mun be thankful for that察

whether she stays or no。 But I canna think what she mun leave a

good home for察to go back int¨ a country where the land察most on¨t察

isna worth ten shillings an acre察rent and profits。 ̄

^Why察that¨s just the reason she wants to go察as fur as she can

give a reason察院 said Mrs。 Poyser。 ^She says this country¨s too

comfortable察an¨ there¨s too much t¨ eat察an¨ folks arena miserable

enough。 And she¨s going next week。 I canna turn her察say what I

will。 It¨s allays the way wi¨ them meek´faced people察 you may¨s

well pelt a bag o¨ feathers as talk to ¨em。 But I say it isna religion察

to be so obstinate!is it now察Adam拭院

Adam saw that Dinah was more disturbed than he had ever

seen her by any matter relating to herself察and察anxious to relieve

her察if possible察he said察looking at her affectionately察 Nay察I can¨t

find fault with anything Dinah does。 I believe her thoughts are

better than our guesses察 let ¨em be what they may。 I should ha¨

been thankful for her to stay among us察but if she thinks well to go察

I wouldn¨t cross her察or make it hard to her by objecting。 We owe

her something different to that。 ̄

As it often happens察the words intended to relieve her were just

too much for Dinah¨s susceptible feelings at this moment。 The

tears came into the grey eyes too fast to be hidden and she got up

hurriedly察meaning it to be understood that she was going to put

on her bonnet。

    ^Mother察 what¨s Dinah crying for拭院 said Totty。 ^She isn¨t a

naughty dell。 ̄

    ^Thee¨st gone a bit too fur察院said Mr。 Poyser。 ^We¨ve no right t¨

could be wi¨ me察if I said a word against anything she did。 ̄

^Because you¨d very like be finding fault wi¨out reason察院 said

Mrs。 Poyser。 ^But there¨s reason i¨ what I say察else I shouldna say

it。 It¨s easy talking for them as can¨t love her so well as her own

aunt does。 An¨ me got so used to her I shall feel as uneasy as a

new sheared sheep when she¨s gone from me。 An¨ to think of her

leaving a parish where she¨s so looked on。 There¨s Mr。 Irwine

makes as much of her as if she was a lady察 for all her being a

forgi¨e me if I¨m i¨ the wrong to call it so。 ̄

^Aye察院 said Mr。 Poyser察 looking jocose察 but thee dostna tell

Adam what he said to thee about it one day。 The missis was

Dinah察and Mr。 Irwine says察 But you mustn¨t find fault with her

for that察Mrs。 Poyser察you forget she¨s got no husband to preach to。

I¨ll answer for it察 you give Poyser many a good sermon。¨ The

parson had thee there察院Mr。 Poyser added察laughing unctuously。 ^I

told Bartle Massey on it察an¨ he laughed too。 ̄

^Yes察it¨s a small joke sets men laughing when they sit a´staring

at one another with a pipe i¨ their mouths察院 said Mrs。 Poyser。

^Give Bartle Massey his way and he¨d have all the sharpness to

himself。 If the chaff´cutter had the making of us察we should all be

This errand was devised for Totty as a means of checking

certain threatening symptoms about the corners of the mouth察for

Tommy察 no longer expectant of cake察 was lifting up his eyelids

    ^You¨re rare and busy now!eh察 Adam拭院 said Mr。 Poyser。

^Burge¨s getting so bad wi¨ his asthmy察 it¨s well if he¨ll ever do

^Yes察 we¨ve got a pretty bit o¨ building on hand now察院 said

Treddles¨on。 ̄

^I¨ll bet a penny that new house Burge is building on his own

We¨ve enough and to spare now察 with only our two selves and

he¨s carrying on the draining察 and all that察 capital。 You must go

some day towards the Stonyshire side and see what alterations

they¨re making。 But he¨s got no notion about buildings。 You can so

seldom get hold of a man as can turn his brains to more nor one

thing察it¨s just as if they wore blinkers like th¨ horses and could see

nothing o¨ one side of ¨em。 Now察there¨s Mr。 Irwine has got notions

o¨ building more nor most architects察for as for th¨ architects察they

set a chimney so as it shan¨t be quarrelling with a door。 My notion

Mr。 Poyser listened with an admiring interest to Adam¨s

discourse on building察 but perhaps it suggested to him that the
