y excuse tomorrow when they saw the ad in the Gazette。 So I thought what the hell察now is as good a time as any察and told them。
;I can't phone him because I don't know where he is。;
;Ha ha察─Dykes said。 ;Ha ha ha。;
;Yes察─I admitted察 it could be a gag。 But it isn't。 I don't know whether he's out of the city or not。 All I know is that he left the house last night察while I was up here察and he hasn't e back´no察that isn't true。 I also know that he called on a friend of his named Vukcic and arranged for his plants to be moved out and his cook to take another job。 And he gave Vukcic a power of attorney。 And he sent an ad to the Gazette announcing his retirement from the detective business。;
Dykes did not ha´ha again。 He merely sat and frowned at me。 Archer察his lips puckered察had his eyes focused on me察but as if he was trying to see not me but through me。 That went on for seconds察and I got unfortable。 I can meet a pair of eyes all right察but not two pairs at once察one in front and one off to the left。
Finally Dykes turned his head to tell Archer察 This makes it nice。;
Archer nodded察not taking his regard from me。 ;It's hard to believe察Goodwin。;
;I'll say it is。 For him to´;
;No察no。 It's hard to believe that Wolfe and you would try anything as fantastic as this。 Obviously he was absolutely pelled to。 You phoned him from Leed's place last night察as soon as you could get to a phone after Mrs。Rackham was murdered。 That was´;
;Excuse me察─I said firmly。 ;Not as soon as I could get to a phone after Mrs。 Rackham was murdered。 As soon as I could get to a phone after I found out she had been murdered。;
;Very well。 We're not in court。; He was leaning at me。 ;That was shortly after midnight。 What did you say to him拭
;I told him what had happened。 I reported察as fully as I could in the time I had察everything from my arrival here up to then。 If the operator listened in you can check with her。 I asked if I should limit my talk with the cops to events here and leave the rest for him to tell察and he said no察I should withhold nothing察including all details of Mrs。 Rackham's talk with him。 That was all。 As you know察I followed instructions。;
;Jesus察─Dykes said。 ;Son察it looks like your turn to sweat has e。;
Archer ignored him。 ;And after telling you to withhold nothing from the police察Wolfe suddenly decides察in the middle of the night察that he has had enough of detective work察sends an ad to a newspaper announcing his retirement察calls on a friend to arrange for the care of his orchids´and what did he do then拭I was so engrossed I may have missed something。;
;I don't know what he did。 He walked out。 He disappeared。;
I was aware察of course察of how it sounded。 It was pletely cuckoo。 It was all rayon and a yard wide。 I damn near made it even worse by telling them about the sausage and the tear gas察of course without letting on that we knew who had sent it察but realized in time how that would go over in the circumstances。 That would have made a hit。 But I had to say or do something察and decided to produce evidence察so I reached to my pocket for it。
;He left notes on the table in his bedroom察─I said察 for Fritz and Theodore and me。 Here's mine。;
I handed it to Archer。 He read it and passed it to Dykes察Dykes read it twice and returned it to Archer察who stuck it in his pocket。 ;Jesus察─Dykes said again察looking at me in a way I didn't like。 ;This is really something。 I've always thought Nero Wolfe had a lot on the ball察and you too in a way察but this is about the worst I ever saw。 Really。; He turned to Archer。 ;It's plain what happened。;
;It certainly is。; Archer made a fist。 ;Goodwin察I don't ask you to tell me。
I'll tell you。 When you found Mrs。 Rackham there dead察you and Leeds agreed on a tale about the visit to Nero Wolfe。 Leeds came here to break the news。 You went to his place to phone Wolfe and report察both the murder and the tale you and Leeds had agreed on´or maybe Wolfe knew that already察since you had pretended to investigate the dog poisoning。 In any case察Wolfe knew something that he didn't dare to try to cover and that察equally察he didn't dare to reveal。 What made it unbearably hot was the murder。 So he arranged to disappear察and we haven't got him察and it may take a day or a week to find him。 But we've got you。;
The fist hit the table察not hard。 ;You know where Wolfe is。 You know what he knows that he had to run away from。 It is vital information required by me in my investigation of a murder。 Surely you must see that your position is untenable察you can't possibly get away with it。 Twenty Nero Wolfes couldn't bring you out of this with a whole skin。 Even if he's cooking up one of his flashy surprises察even if he walks into my office tomorrow with the murderer and the evidence to convict him察I will not stand for this。 There is no written record of what you said last night。 I'll get the stenographer back in here and we'll tear up his notebook and what he has typed察and you can start from scratch。;
;Better grab it察son察─Dykes said察perfectly friendly。 ;Loyalty to your employer is a fine thing察but not when he's got a screw loose。;
I yawned。 ;My God察I'm sleepy。 I wouldn't mind this so much if I was helping out with a fix察good or bad察but it's a shame to get stuck with the truth。 Ask me tomorrow察ask me all summer察I refuse to tell a Be。 And I do not know where Mr。 Wolfe is。;
Archer stood up。 ;Get a material witness warrant and lock him up察─he said察almost squeaking察and marched out。

THE jail at White Plains uses a gallon of strong disinfectant察diluting it察of course察every day including Sunday。 I can back that statement up with two pieces of evidence此the word of the turnkey on the second´floor cell block察whose name is Wilkes察given to me personally察and my sense of smell察which is above average。
I had no opportunity to make a tour of inspection during the twenty hours I was there察that Easter Sunday and the day following察but except for the smell I found nothing to write to the newspapers about察once you grant that society must protect itself against characters like me。 My cell´or rather察our cell察since I had a mate´was as clean as they e。 There was something about the blankets that made you keep them away from your chin察but that could have been just prejudice。 The light was nothing wonderful察but good enough to read by for thirty days。
I didn't really get acquainted with my surroundings or my mate until Monday察I was so darned sleepy when they finally finished with me down below and showed me up to my room。 They had been insistent but not ferocious。 I had been allowed to phone Fritz that I wouldn't be home察which was a good thing察as there was no telling what he would have done with no word from me ing on top of Wolfe's fadeout察and also to try to call Nathaniel Parker察the only lawyer Wolfe has ever been willing to invite to dinner察but that was no go because he was away for the weekend。 When at last I stretched out on the cot察I was dead to the world ten seconds after my head hit the pillow察consisting of my pants wrapped in my shirt。
It was the pants察or rather the coat and vest that went with them察that made my stay pleasanter than it might have been right from the start。 I had had perhaps half as much sleep as I could have used when a hell of a noise banged at me and I lifted my head and opened my eyes。 Across the cell on another cot察so far away that I would have had to stretch my arm its full length to touch him察was my cellmate´a broad´shouldered guy about my age察maybe a little older察with a mop of tousled black hair。 He was sitting up察yawning。
;What's all the racket拭─I asked。 ;Jail break拭
;Breakfast and check´up in ten minutes察─he replied察getting his feet察with socks on察to the floor。 ;Stupid custom。;
;Boneheads察─I agreed察twisting up to sit on the edge of the cot。
Going to the chair where his wardrobe was察his eye fell on my chair察and he stepped to it for a look at the coat and vest。 He fingered the lapel察looked inside at the lining察and inspected a buttonhole。 Then察without ment察he returned to his side察two whole steps察and started to dress。 I followed suit。
;Where do we wash拭─I inquired。
;After breakfast察─he replied察 if you insist。;
A man in uniform appeared on the other side of the bars and used his hands察and the cell door swung open。
;Wait a minute察Wilkes察─my mate told him察and then asked me察 You cleaned out拭
;Naturally。 This is a modem jail。;
;Would bacon and eggs suit you拭─ Just right。;
;Toast white or rye拭
;White。;
;Our tastes are similar。 Make it two察Wilkes。 Two of everything。;
;As you say察─the turnkey said distinctly察and went。 My mate察getting his necktie under his shirt collar察told me察 They won't allow exceptions to the turnout and check´up察but you can pass up the garbage。 We'll eat here in privacy。;
;This察─I said earnestly察 is the brotherhood of man。 I would like this breakfast to be on me when I get my wallet back。;
He waved it away。 ;Forget it。;
The turnout and check´up察I discovered察were not to be taken as opportunities for conversation。 There were around forty of us察all shapes and sizes察and on the whole we were frankly not a blue´ribbon outfit。 The smell of the breakfast added to the disinfectant was enough to account for the expressions on the faces察not counting whatever it was that had got them there察and it was a relief to get back to my cozy cell with my mate。
We had our hands and faces washed察and he had his teeth brushed察when the breakfast came on a big clean aluminum tray。 The eats were barely usable if you took Fritz's productions as a standard察but pared with the munity meal which I had seen and smelled they were a handsome feast。
My mate having ordered two of everything察there were two morning Gazettes察and before he even touched his orange juice he took his paper and察with no glance at the front page察turned to sports。 Finishing his survey of the day's prospects察he drank some orange juice and inquired察 Are you interested in the rapidity of horses拭
;In a way。; I added earnestly察 I like the way you talk。 I enjoy being with cultured people。;
He gave me a suspicious look察saw my honest candid countenance察and relaxed。 ;That's natural。 Look at your clothes。;
We were on the chairs察with the little wooden table between us。 It was fortable enough except that there was no room to prop up our morning papers。 He flattened his out察still open at sports察on the end of the cot察and turned to it while disposing of a bite of food。 I arranged mine察front page察on my knee。 In the picture of Mrs察Rackham the poor woman looked homelier than she had actually been察which was a darned shame even though she wasn't alive to see it。 Wolfe's name and mine both appeared in the subheads under the three´column spread about the murder。
I glanced at the bottom察followed the instruction to turn to page four察and there saw more pictures。 The one of Wolfe was only fair察making him look almost bloated察but the one of me was excellent。 There was one of a Doberman pinscher standing at attention。 It was captioned Hebe察which I doubted。 The play in the
