。 But I observed察though I was such a great sinner before conversion察yet God never much charged the guilt of the sins of my ignorance upon me察only He showed me察I was lost if I had not Christ察because I had been a sinner此 I saw that I wanted a perfect righteousness to present me without fault before God察and this righteousness was no where to be found察but in the Person of Jesus Christ。

。 But my original and inward pollution察That察that was my plague and affliction察that I saw at a dreadful rate察always putting forth itself within me察that I had the guilt of察to amazement察by reason of that察I was more loathsome in mine own eyes than was a toad察and I thought I was so in God's eyes too此 Sin and corruption察I said察 would as naturally bubble out of my heart察as water would bubble out of a fountain此 I thought now察that every one had a better heart than I had察I could have changed heart with any body察I thought none but the devil himself could equalise me for inward wickedness and pollution of mind。 I fell therefore at the sight of my own vileness deeply into despair察for I concluded察that this condition that I was in察could not stand with a state of grace。 Sure察thought I察I am forsaken of God察sure察I am given up to the devil察and to a reprobate mind此 and thus I continued a long while察 even for some years together。

。 While I was thus afflicted with the fears of my own damnation察 there were two things would make me wonder察the one was察when I saw old people hunting after the things of this life察as if they should live here always此 the other was察when I found professors much distressed and cast down察when they met with outward losses察as of husband察wife察child察etc。 Lord察thought I察what a´do is here about such little things as these What seeking after carnal things察by some察and what grief in others for the loss of them if they so much labour after察and shed so many tears for the things of this present life察how am I to be bemoaned察pitied察and prayed for My soul is dying察my soul is damning。 Were my soul but in a good condition察and were I but sure of it察ah how rich should I esteem myself察though blessed but with bread and water I should count those but small afflictions察and should bear them as little burthens。 A WOUNDED SPIRIT WHO CAN BEAR

。 And though I was much troubled察and tossed察and afflicted察with the sight and sense and terror of my own wickedness察yet I was afraid to let this sight and sense go quite off my mind此 that unless guilt of conscience was taken off the right way察that is察by the blood of Christ a man grew rather worse for the loss of his trouble of mind察than better。 Wherefore察if my guilt lay hard upon me察then I should cry that the blood of Christ might take it off此 and if it was going off without it for the sense of sin would be sometimes as if it would die察and go quite away察then I would also strive to fetch it upon my heart again察by bringing the punishment of sin in hell fire upon my spirit察and should cry察LORD察LET IT NOT GO OFF MY HEART察BUT THE RIGHT WAY察BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST察AND THE APPLICATION OF THY MERCY察THROUGH HIM察TO MY SOUL察for that scripture lay much upon me察WITHOUT SHEDDING OF BLOOD IS NO REMISSION。 Heb。 ix。 22。 And that which made me the more afraid of this察was察because I had seen some察who though when they were under wounds of conscience察would cry and pray察yet seeking rather present ease from their trouble察than pardon for their sin察cared not how they lost their guilt察so they got it out of their mind此 now察having got it off the wrong way察it was not sanctified unto them察but they grew harder and blinder察and more wicked after their trouble。 This made me afraid察and made me cry to God the more察 that it might not be so with me。

。 And now I was sorry that God had made me man察for I feared I was a reprobate察I counted man as unconverted察the most doleful of all the creatures。 Thus being afflicted and tossed about my sad condition察I counted myself alone察and above the most of men unblessed。

。 Yea察I thought it impossible that ever I should attain to so much goodness of heart察as to thank God that He had made me a man。 Man indeed is the most noble by creation察of all creatures in the visible world察but by sin he has made himself the most ignoble。 The beasts察birds察fishes察etc。 I blessed their condition察for they had not a sinful nature察they were not obnoxious to the wrath of God察they were not to go to hell´fire after death察I could therefore have rejoiced察had my condition been as any of theirs。

。 In this condition I went a great while察but when comforting time was come察I heard one preach a sermon on these words in the song察Song iv。 1察BEHOLD察THOU ART FAIR察MY LOVE察BEHOLD察THOU ART FAIR。 But at that time he made these two words察MY LOVE察his chief and subject matter此 from which察after he had a little opened the text察he observed these several conclusions此 1。 THAT THE CHURCH察 AND SO EVERY SAVED SOUL察IS CHRIST'S LOVE察WHEN LOVELESS。 2。 CHRIST'S LOVE WITHOUT A CAUSE。 3。 CHRIST'S LOVE察WHEN HATED OF THE WORLD。 4。 CHRIST'S LOVE察WHEN UNDER TEMPTATION AND UNDER DESTRUCTION。 5。 CHRIST'S LOVE察FROM FIRST TO LAST。

。 But I got nothing by what he said at present察only when he came to the application of the fourth particular察this was the word he said察IF IT BE SO察THAT THE SAVED SOUL IS CHRIST'S LOVE察WHEN UNDER TEMPTATION AND DESERTION察THEN POOR TEMPTED SOUL察WHEN THOU ART ASSAULTED察AND AFFLICTED WITH TEMPTATIONS察AND THE HIDINGS OF GOD'S FACE察YET THINK ON THESE TWO WORDS察'My love' STILL。

。 So as I was going home察these words came again into my thoughts察and I well remember察as they came in察I said thus in my heart察WHAT SHALL I GET BY THINKING ON THESE TWO WORDS拭 This thought had no sooner passed through my heart察but these words began thus to kindle in my spirit察THOU ART MY LOVE察THOU ART MY DOVE察twenty times together察and still as they ran in my mind察they waxed stronger and warmer察and began to make me look up察but being as yet察between hope and fear察I still replied in my heart察BUT IS IT TRUE察BUT IS IT TRUE拭 At which that sentence fell upon me察HE WIST NOT THAT IT WAS TRUE察WHICH WAS DONE BY THE ANGEL。 Acts xii。 9。

。 Then I began to give place to the word which with power察did over and over make this joyful sound within my soul察'THOU ART MY LOVE察THOU ART MY LOVE察AND NOTHING SHALL SEPARATE THEE FROM MY LOVE。 And with that my heart was filled full of comfort and hope察 and now I could believe that my sins should be forgiven me察yea察I was now so taken with the love and mercy of God察that I remember I could not tell how to contain till I got home此 I thought I could have spoken of His love察and have told of His mercy to me察even to the very crows察that sat upon the ploughed lands before me察had they been capable to have understood me此 wherefore I said in my soul察with much gladness察WELL察I WOULD I HAD A PEN AND INK HERE察I WOULD WRITE THIS DOWN BEFORE I GO ANY FARTHER察FOR SURELY I WILL NOT FORGET THIS FORTY YEARS HENCE。 But察alas within less than forty days I began to question all again察which made me begin to question all still。

。 Yet still at times I was helped to believe察that it was a true manifestation of grace unto my soul察though I had lost much of the life and favour of it。 Now about a week or a fortnight after this I was much followed by this scripture察SIMON察SIMON察BEHOLD察SATAN HATH DESIRED TO HAVE YOU察Luke xxii。 31察and sometimes it would sound so loud within me察yea察and as it was察call so strongly after me察that once察above all the rest察I turned my head over my shoulder察thinking verily that some man had behind me察called me察 being at a great distance察methought he called so loud此 it came察 as I have thought since察to have stirred me up to prayer察and to watchfulness此 it came to acquaint me察that a cloud and a storm was coming down upon me此 but I understood it not。

。 Also察as I remember察that time that it called to me so loud察 was the last time that it sounded in mine ears察but me thinks I hear still with what a loud voice these words察SIMON察SIMON察 sounded in mine ears。 I thought verily察as I have told you察that somebody had called after me察that was half a mile behind me此 and although that was not my name察yet it made me suddenly look behind me察believing that he that called so loud察meant me。

。 But so foolish was I察and ignorant察that I knew not the reason of this sound察。which as I did both see and feel soon after察was sent from heaven as an alarm察to awaken me to provide for what was coming撮 only I should muse and wonder in my mind察to think what should be the reason of this scripture察and that at this rate察so often and so loud察should still be sounding and rattling in mine ears此 but察as I said before察I soon after perceived the end of God therein。

。 For察about the space of a month after察a very great storm came down upon me察which handled me twenty times worse than all I had met with before察it came stealing upon me察now by one piece察then by another此 First察all my comfort was taken from me察then darkness seized upon me察after which察whole floods of blasphemies察both against God察Christ察and the scriptures察were poured upon my spirit察to my great confusion and astonishment。 These blasphemous thoughts were such as stirred up questions in me against the very being of God察and of His only beloved Son此 As察whether there were in truth察a God or Christ拭 And whether the holy scriptures were not rather a fable察and cunning story察than the holy and pure word of God

。 The tempter would also much assault me with this察HOW CAN YOU TELL BUT THAT THE Turks HAD AS GOOD SCRIPTURES TO PROVE THEIR Mahomet THE SAVIOUR察AS WE HAVE TO PROVE OUR JESUS IS拭 AND察COULD I THINK察THAT SO MANY TEN THOUSANDS察IN SO MANY COUNTRIES AND KINGDOMS察SHOULD BE WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE RIGHT WAY TO HEAVEN察。IF THERE WERE INDEED A HEAVEN察AND THAT WE ONLY察WHO LIVE IN A CORNER OF THE EARTH察SHOULD ALONE BE BLESSED THEREWITH拭 EVERY ONE DOTH THINK HIS OWN RELIGION RIGHTEST察BOTH Jews AND Moors察AND Pagans察AND HOW IF ALL OUR FAITH察AND CHRIST察AND SCRIPTURES察 SHOULD BE BUT A THINK SO TOO

。 Sometimes I have endeavoured to argue against these suggestions察and to set some of the sentences of blessed PAUL against them察but alas I quickly felt察when I thus did察such arguings as these would return again upon me察THOUGH WE MADE SO GREAT A MATTER OF PAUL察AND OF HIS WORDS察YET HOW COULD I TELL察BUT THAT IN VERY DEED察HE BEING A SUBTLE AND CUNNING MAN察MIGHT GIVE HIMSELF UP TO DECEIVE WITH STRONG DELUSIONS此 AND ALSO TAKE THE PAINS AND TRAVEL察TO UNDO AND DESTROY HIS FELLOWS。

。 These suggestions察。with many others which at this time I may not察and dare not utter察neither by word or pen撮 did make such a seizure upon my spirit察and did so overweigh my heart察both with their number察continuance察and fiery force察that I felt as if there were nothing else but these from morning to night within me察and as though indeed there could be room for nothing else察and also concluded察that God had
