t察and teach the people among whom I came察and I thought this to be a work that had no hurt in it此 but was rather worthy of commendation察than blame。
WINGATE。 Whereat he told me察that if they would not be so bound察 my mittimus must be made察and I sent to the jail察there to lie to the quarter sessions。
Now while my mittimus was making察the justice was withdrawn察and in comes an old enemy to the truth察Dr Lindale察who察when he was come in察fell to taunting at me with many reviling terms。
BUN。 To whom I answered察that I did not come thither to talk with him察but with the justice。 Whereat he supposed that I had nothing to say for myself察and triumphed as if he had got the victory察 charging and condemning me for meddling with that for which I could show no warrant察and asked me察if I had taken the oaths拭and if I had not察it was pity but that I should be sent to prison察etc。
I told him察that if I was minded察I could answer to any sober question that he should put to me。 He then urged me again察how I could prove it lawful for me to preach察with a great deal of confidence of the victory。
But at last察because he should see that I could answer him if I listed察I cited to him that verse in Peter察which saith察EVERY MAN HATH RECEIVED THE GIFT察EVEN SO LET HIM MINISTER THE SAME察ETC。
LIND。 Aye察saith he察to whom is that spoken
BUN。 To whom察said I察why to every man that hath received a gift from God。 Mark察saith the apostle察AS EVERY MAN THAT HATH RECEIVED A GIFT FROM GOD察etc。察and again察YOU MAY ALL PROPHESY ONE BY ONE。 Whereat the man was a little stopt察and went a softlier pace此 but not being willing to lose the day察he began again察and said此
LIND。 Indeed察I do remember that I have read of one Alexander a coppersmith察who did much oppose察and disturb the apostles察 aiming it is like at me察because I was a tinker。
BUN。 To which I answered察that I also had read of very many priests and pharisees察that had their hands in the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ。
LIND。 Aye察saith he察and you are one of those scribes and pharisees此 for you察with a pretence察make long prayers to devour widows' houses。
BUN。 I answered察that if he had got no more by preaching and praying than I had done察he would not be so rich as now he was。 But that scripture coming into my mind察ANSWER NOT A FOOL ACCORDING TO HIS FOLLY察I was as sparing of my speech as I could察without prejudice to truth。
Now by this time my mittimus was made察and I committed to the constable察to be sent to the jail in Bedford察etc。
But as I was going察two of my brethren met with me by the way察and desired the constable to stay察supposing that they should prevail with the justice察through the favour of a pretended friend察to let me go at liberty。 So we did stay察while they went to the justice察 and after much discourse with him察it came to this此 that if I would come to him again察and say some certain words to him察I should be released。 Which when they told me察I said if the words was such that might be said with a good conscience察I should or else I should not。 So through their importunity went back again察 but not believing that I should be delivered此 for I feared their spirit was too full of opposition to the truth to let me go察unless I should察in something or other察dishonour my God and wound my conscience。 Wherefore察as I went察I lifted up my heart to God察for light and strength to be kept察that I might not do any thing that might either dishonour Him察or wrong my own soul察or be a grief or discouragement to any that was inclining after the Lord Jesus Christ。
Well察when I came to the justice again察there was Mr FOSTER of Bedford察who察coming out of another room察and seeing me by the light of the candle for it was dark night when I went thither察he said unto me察Who is there拭JOHN BUNYAN拭with such seeming affection察as if he would have leaped on my neck and kissed me察 which made me somewhat wonder察that such a man as he察with whom I had so little acquaintance察and察besides察that had ever been a close opposer of the ways of God察should carry himself so full of love to me察but察afterwards察when I saw what he did察it caused me to remember those sayings察THEIR TONGUES ARE SMOOTHER THAN OIL察BUT THEIR WORDS ARE DRAWN SWORDS。 And again察BEWARE OF MEN察ETC。 When I had answered him察that blessed be God察I was well察he said察 What is the occasion of your being here拭or to that purpose。 To whom I answered察that I was at a meeting of people a little way off察intending to speak a word of exhortation to them察the justice hearing thereof察said I察was pleased to send his warrant to fetch me before him察etc。
FOST。 So said he察I understand此 but well察if you will promise to call the people no more together察you shall have your liberty to go home察for my brother is very loath to send you to prison察if you will be but ruled。
BUN。 Sir said I察pray what do you mean by calling the people together拭my business is not anything among them察when they are come together察but to exhort them to look after the salvation of their souls察that they may be saved察etc。
FOST。 Saith he察We must not enter into explication察or dispute now察but if you will say you will call the people no more together察 you may have your liberty察if not察you must be sent away to prison。
BUN。 Sir察said I察I shall not force or compel any man to hear me察 but yet察if I come into any place where there is a people met together察I should察according to the best of my skill and wisdom察 exhort and counsel them to seek out after the Lord Jesus Christ察 for the salvation of their souls。
FOST。 He said察That was none of my work察I must follow my calling察 and if I would but leave off preaching察and follow my calling察I should have the justice's favour察and be acquitted presently。
BUN。 To whom I said察that I could follow my calling察and that too察 namely察preaching the Word此 and I did look upon it as my duty to do them both察as I had an opportunity。
FOST。 He said察To have any such meetings was against the law察and察 therefore察he would have me leave off察and say察I would call the people no more together。
BUN。 To whom I said察that I durst not make any further promise察 for my conscience would not suffer me to do it。 And again察I did look upon it as my duty to do as much good as I could察not only in my trade察but also in communicating to all people wheresoever I came the best knowledge I had in the Word。
FOST。 He told me that I was the nearest the Papists of any察and that he would convince me of immediately。
BUN。 I asked him察Wherein
FOST。 He said察In that we understood the Scriptures literally。
BUN。 I told him that those that were to be understood literally察 we understood them so察but for those that was to be understood otherwise察we endeavoured so to understand them。
FOST。 He said察Which of the Scriptures do you understand literally
BUN。 I said this察HE THAT BELIEVES SHALL BE SAVED。 This was to be understood just as it is spoken察that whosoever believeth in Christ shall察according to the plain and simple words of the text察be saved。
FOST。 He said that I was ignorant察and did not understand the Scriptures察for how察said he察can you understand them when you know not the original Greek拭etc。
BUN。 To whom I said察that if that was his opinion察that none could understand the Scriptures but those that had the original Greek察 etc。察then but a very few of the poorest sort should be saved this is harsh察yet the Scripture saith察THAT GOD HIDES THESE THINGS FROM THE WISE AND PRUDENT that is察from the learned of the world察 AND REVEALS THEM TO BABES AND SUCKLINGS。
FOST。 He said there were none that heard me but a company of foolish people。
BUN。 I told him that there was the wise as well as the foolish that do hear me察and again察those that were most commonly counted foolish by the world are the wisest before God察also察that God had rejected the wise察and mighty察and noble察and chosen the foolish察 and the base。
FOST。 He told me that I made people neglect their calling察and that God had commanded people to work six days察and serve Him on the seventh。
BUN。 I told him that it was the duty of people察。both rich and poor察to look out for their souls on them days as well as for their bodies察and that God would have His people exhort one another daily察while it is called to´day。
FOST。 He said again that there were none but a company of poor察 simple察ignorant people that come to hear me。
BUN。 I told him that the foolish and the ignorant had most need of teaching and information察and察therefore察it would be profitable for me to go on in that work。
FOST。 Well察said he察to conclude察but will you promise that you will not call the people together any more拭and then you may be released and go home。
BUN。 I told him that I durst say no more than I had said察for I durst not leave off that work which God had called me to。
So he withdrew from me察and then came several of the justice's servants to me察and told me that I stood so much upon a nicety。 Their master察they said察was willing to let me go察and if I would but say I would call the people no more together察I might have my liberty察etc。
BUN。 I told them there were more ways than one in which a man might be said to call the people together。 As for instance察if a man get upon the market´place察and there read a book察or the like察 though he do not say to the people察Sirs察come hither and hear察yet if they come to him because he reads察he察by his very reading察may be said to call them together察because they would not have been there to hear if he had not been there to read。 And seeing this might be termed a calling the people together察I durst not say察I would not call them together察for then察by the same argument察my preaching might be said to call them together。
WING。 AND FOST。 Then came the justice and Mr Foster to me again察 。we had a little more discourse about preaching察but because the method of it is out of my mind察I pass it察and when they saw that I was at a point察and would not be moved nor persuaded察Mr Foster察 the man that did at first express so much love to me察told the justice that then he must send me away to prison。 And that he would do well察also察if he would present all those that were the cause of my coming among them to meetings。 Thus we parted。
And察verily察as I was going forth of the doors察I had much ado to forbear saying to them that I carried the peace of God along with me察but I held my peace察and察blessed be the Lord察went away to prison察with God's comfort in my poor soul。
After I had lain in the jail five or six days察the brethren sought means察again察to get me out by bondsmen察。for so ran my mittimus察 that I should lie there till I could find sureties。 They went to a justice at Elstow察one Mr Crumpton察to desire him to take bond for my appearing at the quarter sessions。 At the first he told them he would察but afterwards he made a demur at the business察and desired first to see my mittimus察which ran to this purpose此 That I went about to several conventicles in the county察to the great dispara
